    I was in my 30's back then. This is how it was. A nightmare. A useless Government and a panicked public. Several of my friends died when they were in their 30's. I was lucky . Maybe because I was in a monogamous relationship. I'm now 75 and see this film again and it all comes back. Thank God for these people. Thank God for people like Elizabeth Taylor , Elton John and others that took their star power and fought for those affected. They shamed a President into doing something even though it was never enough. I miss all those that led the way. I miss all my friends that couldn't get to my age. I'm so sorry I couldn't do more. A part of me will always feel guilty for outliving them.

    I will always love Elizabeth Taylor for the work she did during this. She is a true ally and should be hailed forever by the LGBTQ community. Im only in my 30s now but I know enough about her and so many other people that helped bring awareness. Rest in eternal power queen! ❤❤ Will always love her for what she did even knowing the hatred it would bring her.

    him not being gay and playing a gay role doesn't automatically makes this movie better, it's his skills and portrayal that allows it

  • @petep.2092

    Huh? On the one hand you say his ability to convincingly portray a role which in reality he is not-which is his skill-doesn’t automatically make the movie better, but on the other hand you say his skill and portrayal allows the movie to be better. It’s baffling. It seems as though you are saying the movie’s ‘goodness’ doesn’t depend on his acting ability alone, which would be a valid point if someone DID make such an absurd claim. But no one did-they WERE talking about the actor, not the movie. Or, maybe you believe there is a different skill (other than portraying a role that in reality he is not) or his portrayal of something other than a gay man that allows the movie to be better. If so, please enlighten me as to what that skill/portrayal might be.

    As a straight man, this isn't about gay sex or marriage, it's about equality. If everyone doesn't have it, none of us have it. That's just how it works. You can either support the concepts of love and equality, or support hate and bigotry. It's that simple. For those who believe in Jesus, which side do you think he would be on?

    Its a crime films such as The Normal Heart still have to be TV Movies. Just look at the amazing cast, getting behind such an important issue. Its a big fat win for the small minded bigots, again. And before the narrow minded 'gay bashers' and 'Trolls' jump all over this, I'm a straight family man with young children, with an open mind and an open heart. I teach my children the same. Love and respect your self above all other things, treat others as you would be treated. And never try and bring anyone down, because that means your are already below them. Now be kind, be peaceful, and remember, nobodys impressed by a vicious keyboard warrior.

Getting ready to start Jr High school and we had no idea of the epidemic which was happening. Watching these movies and documentaries, I can only say thank goodness for medical advancement. Why are these comments so dumb. I'm not gay but just because others are I'm not gonna hate on them. People get real and start living ur life without worrying about others. If u don't like it then move along. Why waste ur time in something u hate or disagree on. Why come here and sorta fights online. With about the bigger things going on in this world and worry about urself. And if u say "oh no this is my opinion and I say what I wanna say". Really😔. If u r gonna say something say it against people who bully, rape, kill, genocide, don't do it to people who haven't done anything to u. Be real and live ur life caring about ur future, ur present, not about others. If u don't like this and leave no one stopping u. Be an arrogant person, so closed that can't accept change. I hope everyone who hates gets someone to help them and live a better life 😄 bye

It gives them less power. Also, I like your comment. I think its cool that your not gay but have the capacity to know whats decent.

It is all about us humans and about our social stigmas and dreadful phobias, which we are hopefully overcoming together, across genders, sexual orientation and races. While I am not gay, not even to the slightest degree, I adore and have been touched deep in my human soul by this drama. Jim Parsons is such a wonderful actor. Very impressive.

    The only reason why people say so many hateful things about this movie is because it's something they don't understand or even see. The only thing that they see is that two men and two women kissing, is disgusting and mostly pay attention to what the bible says. It makes me realize how pathetic those people can be and who are they to say that gay people don't deserve any rights that other people deserves. We're all the same. you cut me and i cut you, we both bleed red, we're not different, we just don't like the same gender as you want us to.

    Really really shocked at the amount of homophobic/ignorant/cruel comments on this trailer. I mean, you could all be trolls fishing for hate, but if not, then WOW SO MANY STUPID PEOPLE. Ignorance and closed-mindedness is the most frustrating thing in the world because no matter how much you argue your point, people, whether their opinions are based on religion or their own skewed thoughts, just can't find it within themselves to look at it from a different point of view. I mean, come on! We're in the 21st Century... we're all equal - black/white, gay/straight, male/female - so who gives us the right to belittle somebody for something they can't help? Something that is perfectly human and natural. Open your fucking eyes.

Almost 20 years later, my father and I still attend every rally, fundraiser and pride parade we are able to go to in honor of him. I too am a big Freddie Mercury fan and a big Queen fan. I recently came across a fictional book called Tell the Wolves I'm Home - it is about a teen girl dealing with the death of her uncle from AIDS in the 1980's and also befriending his lover. It was very touching and sad. Have you seen the documentary, Silverlake Life: The View From Here about two gay men dying of AIDS? Brutal to watch! Also check out: Soup of the Day here on KZread. My main concern about this movie is how white all the actors are. If you know anything about New York gay culture in the 1980s, you know that many/most of them were not white. And yet if you treated this movie as a documentary, whiteness is almost all you see. The black/latino/etc gay men of 1980s New York have been erased.

  • @alexandercook6502

    @alexandercook6502

    The movie is based on a play. In the play, all the characters are white, they're just staying true to the play. However I see your point, there are so many more opportunities for white actors then there are for black actors. That needs to change!

  • @goodgirlkay

    Someone once said, never expect other people to tell your stories. Unless people of color start telling their own stories, they will remain invisible to themselves. Do not expect white people to tell POC's stories. They will never do it right anyway. I just watched this movie as a white man telling his story.

  • @Rhuddlan

    @Rhuddlan

    +kay jay The story of HIV in NYC is not just a white man's story, and that's a terrible excuse for pretending there were no black people involved in these events. The LGBT communities at that time and place were not racially segregated; they experienced these things together. Why you would want segregated movies depicting inaccurate events is beyond me.

  • @goodgirlkay

    @goodgirlkay

    Rhuddlan Sweety, my point is that to expect white people to tell people of color's stories is unrealistic and pathetic. Just to be blunt...they do not give a shit. This is the cold, hard truth. Blacks and Latinos must tell our own stories. The people displayed in this story/play are white, upperclass men. And as a New Yorker, let me just say that YES, there is a whole segment of whites in this city who NEVER have to interact with blacks/latinos except as their subordinates/employees. The author of this story doesn't strike me as someone who did lots of interaction with non-whites in the friends/equals department.

  • @Rhuddlan

    @Rhuddlan

    +kay jay Honey dearest, if you are trying to silence criticism of movies like this for writing black people out of history, then you are part of the problem. These white men do not need you labouring to protect their bubble for them, thanks. If you want to make a better movie: that's great, go for it. But don't ask the rest of us not to criticize bad movies when they are made.

I just cannot fuking get why people see something that is so natural that can even be seen other species as about somethng that is purely sexual.
