The Ninth Gate (1999): The Forgeries of Toledo | Re-upload with Bonus Content

The forged 9th engraving has a mysterious history of its own. This video explores the visual and spoken clues behind the forgeries of Toledo. The Ninth Gate (1999) was co-written, produced, and directed by Roman Polanski and starred Johnny Depp as Dean Corso. The film is loosely based upon Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel The Club Dumas.

I'm obsessed with this theory. There is something not yet mentioned. Ceniza means "ash" and while handling the book, one of the brothers drops ashes on the book. As though foreshadowing they had altered or influenced the book. I think it adds weight to the theory. Anyway, cheers

I've watched this film more than any other in my life and feel embarrassed at all of the details and clues that I've apparently missed. Your incites and thoughts on The 9th Gate are very inciteful and thought provoking. Always look forward to your uploads centering around this masterful work of art.

I always assumed the brothers had figured out the riddle in so far as they knew the LCF engravings differed from the equivalent AT engravings between copies of the books. At that point it became obvious to them that the ninth LCF engraving was important and they devised a slightly alternate image and replaced the valid engraving sheet in their book. Their motives? They could be acting for the light, or the dark forces, hindering the books fate or guarding against the unworthy getting access to the full set of engravings. Or ... they could be representations of mischief and chaos! If they died many years ago, then they were either spirits or being impersonated by the shop movers.

My theory is that the brothers are ALWAYS there. Just in whatever form they are needed. Just like angels. It's no coincidence that both times he goes there is someone there. And that they are twins. And that at least one is always smoking. It's no coincidence he arrives perfectly on time for them to just happen to literally deliver it at his feet. The angels ceniza warned on the approach, but rewarded the return. I watch this movie a lot. I remember when it was only 4 gates.

The most intriguing question is, why did they keep the original engraving? In the book, it was lost forever and not really needed (if you're the worthy one, the chosen one). Taken their supernatural background, as you've told, they've been waiting for Corso all these years, keeping the page for him to find. Hmm, if they were *dead*long time ago, why would Corso travel all that way to talk to them? They were famous in his professional sphere, he'd know if they died.

There's so much symbolism in this movie it kinda screws with my head trying to connect dots and getting more and more out there. The best example is this scene. I always end up thinking, Toledo, Toledo Steele, forgery, forge, yeah no. I can never get there but it always crosses my mind for some maddening reason.

Note that the entire plot of the film involves a Book that supposedly leads to a kind of transcendent experience, yet has had one of its 3 known copies suffer the removal of a pivotal page, replaced by a forgery. And the names of the two book restoration experts, Pablo and Pedro, are the Spanish equivalents of Paul and Peter -- the two disciples/apostles who met their end in Rome (Peter crucified upside-down on a 'Petrine' cross), after both having written New Testament scriptures (their epistles). The twin workmen we see later on imply that the Ceniza Bros. have been dead for some time -- years, supposedly -- but it's obvious that they themselves ARE the Ceniza Bros. in disguise, having waited until Corso's return to tip that shelf over so that the original engraving could slip off the top and flutter to the floor at Corso's feet. If Peter & Paul were heroes working on Heaven's behalf, then Pedro & Pablo were the 'heroes' working on behalf of Hell -- on behalf of Lucifer, the otherwise nameless Green-Eyed Girl [GEG], the only one who KNEW that the 9th engraving in the Balkan-Telfer copy was a forgery . . . or shouldn't we refer to it as the Ceniza edition, since Telfer purchased it from the Ceniza Bros.? And why would THEY have been the ones who owned it before they agreed to sell it to Telfer? Being one of only three editions to have survived the centuries, and having been a priceless work in-and-of itself, how could two guys who make a living restoring books have had the capital to purchase it -- and from whom did THEY purchase it? Or . . . was it in their 'family' possession ever since 1666, when a printer made the three editions in the first place? How did Kessler acquire her copy? How did Fargas get his? Did their ancestors acquire them back in 1666, passing them down through the generations? Who convinced Telfer to sell his edition to Balkan -- and did that Person also persuade him to commit suicide once that had been accomplished? This crucial plot-point was what started the ball rolling, and I suspect that the GEG was behind that. One last thought: Was the revelation that Pedro & Pablo were clever FORGERS a subtle hint or accusation that the New Testament saints Peter and Paul were ALSO forgers, their epistles being lies and pseudohistory? Some of the Pauline Epistles that made it into the canon of the New Testament are often thought by secular scholars to have been less-than-genuine, to put it kindly. Hmm . . .

I’d imagine Balkan wasn’t chosen by the dark forces due to him never making the journey and discovering the answers himself, he hired others to do his bidding and then killed those who got in his way thinking that was enough to earn the books power.

Well I obviously should have read the screenplay! Great insight there. I love the Ceniza brothers. Even Hell has its heroes. It was not in Belkin's path to inherit entrance through the ninth gate. Chance is not equal for all. The pupil outshines the master. That's about all I can say. Except... great video!

The brothers altered the engraving so's to prevent the success of anyone using the book who wasn't of their choosing. They chose Corso to succeed by letting him find the original engraving. I have no idea why him and not Balkan. It seems they are in league with the Mystery Girl, begging the question of who they are, rather than just who she is.

Girl is not part of Cenizas Brothers, as they hided the real truth. The Girl was only waiting for Corso, to complete the teachings of the book, Balkan would never even allow to be tamed by the Girl because he was arrogant, the girl was part of the key to access the gate.

There was a cross hanging on a wall of Ceniza brothers shop. It could indicate that they were devoted Christians who didn't want the book to be used by Satan's followers. They also laugh when they mention Aristide Torqia's death on stake whereas baroness Kessler calls him a brave man.

I have Owned this film from when it came out on dvd till now .I also own the original book from the movie . I have watched this over 300 times easy . The brothers knew about the books powers and believed in it . They did not want anyone to be able to summon Satan that was why they forged it . The brothers left because they knew of Balkin and thought he would be back looking for them or Corso again . They sold the book for Millions so they packed up after corso left and split . I honestly would have done the same . They were masters and did get some joy out of knowing nobody could actually prove it was fake as there work was perfect .

I took the brothers as maybe the only ones in the movie that represented gods soldiers/ good characters. The reason they forged it as it was obviously not for profit was to stop followers of the devil from opening the ninth gate. Ie they hid the final real page from the world on behalf of god.

There is a mistake in the movie, Balkan could never had known the look of the final castle (mentioned in the postcard owned by Kessler) since none of them saw the real final engraving . In that regard the castle where Balkan does the ritual should not had been the Cathar castle but a palace (wich burns in flames)
