The Nintendo Entertainment System vs the Super Nintendo - Retro Bird

Ойындар

Two of the greatest consoles ever made, and yet there generally isn't much animosity between fans of the two systems. Why is that and what do each of these consoles have going for them? I talk about all that and more in my comparison and overview of the two consoles that formed some of Nintendo's best years.

I had an NES growing up, but I can vividly remember the day my friend told me there was "a new Nintendo" at the toy store. I went: "What do you mean, NEW Nintendo?" to which he replied "I don't know, it's there, it looks awesome and it says Nintendo on the top, so it must be a new one." We were blown away, even though we didn't really understand the concept of console generations at that time.

Throughout the years I have played pretty much every Console with a few exceptions. I remember when my friend told me about the super nintendo I was like what? Super Nintendo? Lol. Yeah right! @Daniel G I'll be 45 this year and I love both systems. Although, I do have more nostalgia for the NES and it's gamepad. Early on, the big deal games for me was SMB1, Zelda 1, and Metroid. Later on, I got into Pro Wrestling, Tetris, Double Dragon 1, Goonies II, Life Force, Contra 1, SMB 2-3, Legacy of the Wizard, Dragon Warrior series, Bionic Commando, MTPO, Ninja Gaiden 1, Ninja Turtles 1&2, and various others. On the SNES, it was SMW, Zelda3, Metroid3, SF2's, Bomberman 1-2, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 2-3(US), Paladin's Quest, Mario Kart, Street Racer (for it's 4 player capability). Later on I got into DKC1, SMW2, SFA2, SMRPG. The thing I think is funny is that the NES was actually capable of using the SNES gamepad and all it's buttons, yet for some reason, Nintendo chose to use a different shape for the plug on the SNES gamepad to make it physically impossible to plug it into an NES. I feel kind of cheated, but think I get why they did this. Probably for the same reason they chose not to release Star Fox 2 and their Super FX2 chip. They wanted their customer base to have a clear distinction of the power and capabilities of their newer systems being vastly superior to the older ones. More buttons was one of the mind blowing features that made the SNES more appealing than the NES. If they shared that with the NES, then both fans and developers wouldn't have as much urgency to rush over to the SNES right away. That still doesn't make me feel any better though, figuring this out decades later. Sega at least had the decency of upgrading their gamepad on the Genesis, and not making their fans wait for the Saturn to get more buttons. Although, they were probably forced to because their next-gen system was far from being complete when the Street Fighter 2 craze hit. That could have been curtains for Sega at that point if they didn't figure out how to add more buttons to their gamepad pretty quick. Too bad they didn't give us more buttons at the beginning of the Genesis' life. All they did there was match the same number of buttons as the NES, moving the Select button over and making it 1 more action button. Woohoo! One action button more superior than the NES! Not very innovative for it being more powerful system than the NES if you ask me. Don't even get me started on the Master System's measly 2 button only gamepads. It's great that it used a better processor and had more colors, but that wasn't enough for me, because the NES had more buttons, a much more comfortable directional pad, and I think even 1 more sound channel. The SMS was released years after the NES. I find this failure to meet or exceed the competition in these 2 important areas (more importantly the buttons) to be inexcusable. The Genesis 3 button gamepad would have been more fitting for the Master System, and the Genesis should have started with double that. If I were a developer back then, I would gladly sacrifice developing on one system with better graphics, for one that had more buttons so I could provide more control options to the player. -_- Heh. That's quite a tangent I went on. Oh well. Posting anyways.

My buddy gave me his SNES as he went full on Extreme Sega in the 90s. Now I needed games. So I looked at it like a restaurant if you go to a pizza place you get pizza as that is what they were known for. So I did the same with the SNES & bought a few titles that started with SUPER in them. Man what joy it was as all the titles with SUPER in them just hit it out of the park...Home Run! Not one bad purchase did I have with the SNES & just recently with internet I can do the same again, but nothing will beat buying blind in the 90s just because it had SUPER on it.

yeah, had I gotten one of those I might have loved the nes... but the brick controllers were always the bane of my experience whenever I rented an NES or played at my friend's house. so many of the games were so hard too... they wanted to force you to call the hotline or buy nintendo power. the games were contests of sheer memorization to win in some many cases. you memorized the game then showed off to your friends who came over who didn't have the game so had no hope of competing because they couldn't master it in a few hours when you days/weeks/etc to do so. if I had bought an nes instead of a genesis I would have made it my mission to track down a game genie and a pair of dogbones and had a blast. another thing I loved with video games was multiplayer. so many console games were about taking turns or just single player. drop in, drop out coop or vs. were something arcades did so well. consoles that embraced couch gaming as much as they did online multiplayer have kept me using them. like on my 360 that's mostly what I do. there's only so much I can do playing a game that feels more like an interactive movie that I never want to touch again once I've beaten it once (and I can't be bothered to grind through it and get every last item or achievement). so much more fun to enjoy with friends far and near, much like the arcades of old where you got together a pick up game with some strangers or gathered with your best pals and took on the world together

The interesting thing with both NES and SNES was that the cartridges was kind of a part of the hardware. The hardware/electronics inside the cartridges got improved a lot! So that's why it was possible to make games like Super Mario Bros 3. Just compare the earliest and latest NES games. Such a big difference! And this for the same console. I wonder how great NES games it's possible to make today (2021) if some gaming company would do their best. I love both NES and SNES but I have a little bit more and stronger feelings for NES actually.

I'm 42 and had both NES and SNES as a kid. I view them as having a shared identity, the SNES just looks and sounds nicer. They both played the same sort of games and a backwards compatible SNES model would have felt completely natural if Nintendo had developed one back then. I'm really surprised at how Zelda: Link to the Past's reputation has become some great over the years. Back then it struck me as a good SNES game like Super Castlevania but not a system seller or a super prominent game. I've always considered the NES Legend of Zelda the superior game. Similarly Super Metroid struck me as a slightly improved, prettier version of the Gameboy's Metroid 2. NES gamepad corners absolutely will dig into your palms if you play long enough. Or played too long really if I'm being honest with myself. I still remember the aches from long hours of twitch games. The SNES dogbone style came as quite a relief to me.

I can't remember seeing an NES vs SNES video like this before. Awesome!! For me, it's SNES but I think it's because I was on the young side when NES was around. When I had an NES, I was so young that the games I played were the games I got for Christmas or birthday, or the games my friends had. In contrast, since I was older with the SNES, I just played so many more games since I had a flyer route by then, and I could go to the local video store to rent games. I think for now, I still prefer SNES games, but the Mega Man series is one of the games that just seems better on the NES. I'm now curious if I would prefer the NES if I just played more NES games. :D Thanks again for the great video!

I’m split, NES was my first system and definitely most nostalgic. Plus with songs like double dragon, moon theme on Duck Tales, palace theme on The Adventures of link and so many other iconic toons it’s hard to go wrong. On top of all that it got me started on RPG’s with the original Final Fantasy the first game I ever beat. On the super Nintendo side you’re right they did really improve on so many aspects of gaming. Games like Donkey Kong country and a link to the past and Final Fantasy three Bing prime examples of taking an excellent game and improving on almost every aspect of it. The music here was also iconic bowser‘s castle theme in super Mario world and Donkey Kong country in particular had amazing soundtracks. Plus we got introduced to fantastic games like Mario kart and Star Fox. I’m sorry but I just can’t pick. I love them both

A agree, the NES had some sadistically hard games. When I got my Game Genie that one fine Christmas everything changed, though. :p I grew up with the NES, but the SNES really drew me in, and the majority of my most memorable gaming experiences were on that console. IMO the 16-bit era is really where 2D gaming hit it's stride even though next gen consoles has some pretty memorable 2D titles as well (looking at you, SOTN). The NES in comparison holds more of a nostalgic place in my heart. Some of my most beloved games on the NES are special to me because of the sheer mystery of game play exploration. Non-linear games like Metroid, Zelda/Link and Legacy of the Wizard - games where you could truly get lost and have no clue what to do without the help of a magazine of the Nintendo 1-800 hotline - they really set the stage for non-linear exploration and progress based on item acquisition. There were no in-game maps to help. In fact, IIRC the manual for Metroid actually recommends that you DRAW out a map with a pencil and paper to track your progress. Compared to today's games that basically hold your hand through the whole experience and provide checkpoints every 30 seconds, the NES days churned out some real alpha gamers. Love the channel, by the way!

As for NES and SNES, they're both a little bit before my time, but I got to play some NES games like 1942, Battle City, Bomberman, Super Maio Bros, Tetris on VCD/DVD players with those SunPlus chipsets in the past and had fun despite the terrible controller. Got to play other NES and SNES games later on through emulation and SNES would be my preference now as it had more power and the games tend to be more polished as developers got better at making games.

Related to the NES, it was years later that I discovered there was a Famicom at home that was left by a relative, but I never got it to power up as it was only the console. No games, no power adapter, and I don't even have any working CRT tvs anymore. So I just cleaned it up and discovered that membranes for one of the controllers were falling apart. Didn't bother with the repair as it'll be only used for display and I'm not nostalgic about it as I didn't have any attatchment to it. But I wouldn't dispose of it.

Even though I have collections for both, I'd have to say NES since I have more childhood nostalgia for it. I didn't buy a SNES until after I got an N64, not that I hadn't seen it or played it, I just had the NES at home and enjoyed the heck out of the comparatively small collection, renting new games and unowned favorites, trading games with friends, losing good games in trades and then having to rebuy them years later and going to a friend's house to play SNES. You know... the things. I didn't have a problem with the controller when I was a kid, but now I find it uncomfortable due to a hand injury or two. It's the worst with Smash TV when you have one controller in each hand! But, a nice workaround is the Dogbone controller which I got a pair of with a top loader a couple years ago. I started recording some game footage and the classic NES works better for that so, now I have both. Hooray! Also in all the years collecting, I've just been more likely to grab an NES game than a SNES one. It's 148:81 on my shelf. Do I have too many games? (That's just 2 out of 25 console/handheld collections!) Love the channel! Catching up on some of your older videos since I only discovered your channel in the last year probably and you have a great entertaining formula and easy familiar topics that are very relatable. Nostalgia for both, both have awesome titles and I have fun playing both. If I had a gun to my head and made to choose I would just say one but couldn’t really choose. Lol. I can always count on getting a good laugh watching your video. The blade under the controller was a good one. Haha

I grew up with the NES as a child and later the SNES, but I'd give a slight edge to the SNES. Don't get me wrong, I love both systems, but I generally go back to SNES games more than the NES games. I'm not sure exactly all the reasons why, but I think one of the reasons may be the wider game library and game design. SNES had such a variety of titles and just seemed to have tighter controls in many games. I love Super Metroid and Link to the Past, but not fond of the way The original Legend of Zelda or original Metroid played. Also, I appreciate SNES games being a more comfortable challenge compared to the NES ones. For example, Super Castlevania IV features a gradual difficulty curve whereas the original NES Castlevanias never hesitated to throw you in the dirt constantly. 😅

I love both consoles, but the SNES just has a greater number of awesome games, and in fact, it is my favorite console of all time. My second however is the NES, followed closely by the Genesis. I've finished at least very close to 500 games on each of those three consoles and over 4,500 games all total in my life. There just isn't a better console than the SNES.

Loved the video man! I thought that you explain things so very well and I agree with you on pretty much everything! Keep playing Battletoads because one day you will beat it and it took me 10 years so don't feel too bad! I literally just beat Snake Rattle 'n Roll the other day and that is a game that took me 30 years to finish! In any case I don't know which of the two consoles is my favorite because I always lump them together when discussing greatest consoles of all time. I would probably go with the NES if I had to choose one but with that being said I believe that the Super Nintendo library has greater strength at the top with games like Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong Country 2 being the best of the bunch.

It wasn't by ignoring people that Ninty was able to further push the Super Nintendo, but by addressing the complaints with my favorite comedy routine of theirs - the whole "it's *not* a replacement" shtick. They and other developers continued to make games for the NES all the way up until 1995, by which point the *SNES* was about to leave the spotlight.

I wanted the other video over this one, but I do have to say, this was an awesome video. I loved the sharp NES controller bit. Also, Donkey Kong Country probably has some of the best music ever made in video game history. I would say SNES in my book. It was my first console, and the music plus the being able to save games is a really attractive quality when it comes to the 2 consoles. Oh, and not to complain, but the NES card slot is easily broken if you aren't careful. The top loading snes was a better choice on Nintendos part.

The games get the same amount of playtime but the NES does it by making you die and die again until you adapt to it's levels and memorize it and play it expertly. After playing modern games, and not having nostalgia fueling me, it is difficult to play but so far I've at least beaten castlevania 1. Hoping to finish more in time

Another entertaining video Retro Bird! It has to be the NES for me. It wasn't my first console (I had the Atari 2600) but it still feels the most important. When I got a little bit back into retro games about 12 years ago, my only thought was the NES. I didn't even remotely consider collecting for the SNES or Genesis and when the mini console craze started if the NES classic didn't get so much attention I might have ignored the whole scene. It's funny because my NES classic gets the least play time of my consoles now but it was absolutely necessary to pull me back into the hobby and I'm so glad it did.

But the SNES is what I grew up with so I played it so much that I can't see collecting for it again. I just use the snes mini and put a ton of games on it. Like em both but went with NES for physical collection.

as a young gamer I started out with arcade games, so they were the standard by which I judged everything else. to me the atari 2600 was nowhere close to arcades. the games were fun but they just kind of generally reminded you of a game. the nes fell far short as well... hardly any colors, very pixelated, really primitive sound. the closest conversions were the oldest ones. games that were a decade in the past were closer on the console, but arcades were always ahead. when the sega genesis came out a lot of games were starting to look closer to their arcade counterparts. the super nintendo also was getting close on some of these, and the older games were almost perfect in both cases. of course the neo geo was arcade perfect because it was arcade hardware! but nobody I knew could afford such a beast with each game costing as much as a whole regular console! eventually arcades were in decline and many would say by the time we got the n64 and the playstation the 3d arcade games were more or less what you got at home. that wasn't entirely true of course but getting harder and harder to find superior arcade games in terms of graphics, sound, and overall pizzaz. then we got the dreamcast with all its gimmick controls (a trick that the wii was also pulling off albeit in limited form). and by this time load times in disc games were tolerable instead of being completely annoying. now suddenly the graphics were the same (sometimes even better at home), and even the special control gimmicks could be had at home... other than the disco lights and smoke machines, you had the arcade at home. and arcades were dead at that point. sad for arcades... and yes I know we have the nostalgia museums and barcades but it was over. still, when my favorite arcade games were at home the graphics had to be pretty close and the gameplay had to be as good or better than what we got there. sometimes the gameplay was achieved better on the inferior hardware. look at kung fu master... way more colorful graphics in the orginal but the gameplay was much tighter and I think more fun in "kung fu" on the nes. in the end it was about the fun you had even if all we ever talked about back then was graphics and what was the newest thing.

NES was my first console, I got it at the age of 3 and it kickstarted a video game obsession for me. Christmas of 95 I got exactly what I asked for: a Super Nintendo. It still is my favorite Christmas memory ever. I love both systems and really couldn't imagine giving up one completely. SNES was obviously an improvement over the NES(or "Regular Nintendo" as we once called it), but so many NES games are must plays for anybody serious about retro gaming. As much as I love Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros 3(NES, not the allstars) will always be my favorite 2D Mario. The NES revived the American video game industry. On the other hand, the SNES is an improvement in just about every way over the NES. Games looked, played, and sounded better. The controller was a stepping stone to getting us to modern controllers. The console war between the SNES and Genesis(I had one too) made for some great games and defined what a console generation actually was.

Mickey Mouse and the Magical Quest 5. Super Mario World 6. Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers 7. Mortal Kombat II 8. Contra III: The Alien Wars 9. Final Fantasy III (VI) 10. Secret of Mana 11. Megan Man X 12. Mega Man X2 13. Mega Man 7 14. Super Double Dragon 15. Donkey Kong Country 16. Donkey Kong Country 2 17. Top Gear 18. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 19. Super Mario Kart 20. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time If I had to pick just one, I’m definitely going with the Super Nintendo! Whereas the games for the NES were absolutely great, the SNES games took it up a notch and gave me an almost arcade experience mixed with cool adventure games and sequels that are far more than just enhancements. The nes in my opinion had the best games of all a time at the time and really made the idea of a console itself a must and less of a thing just to buy for just entertainment or a novelty! The nes did everything well and quiet perfectly tbh although it was a learning period for developers I think games tended to be unfairly hard but the games that are fairly hard like battletoads my god they are good ! With all that being said thought I think the snes was just a better and bigger continuation of what the nes started.

Super Mario World was a colorful joy, DKC2 was a mix of magical soundtracks, beautiful levels and amazing secrets to discover, etc. So far, I've only played NES games on Nintendo Online, and I do like many games there, but SNES wins my preference.

the snes charm and 16bit gfx is just enough where you can do a lot of really well done art without being so limited, the nes i felt had a lot of black screens due to gfx limitations and just kind of gives me bad vibes sometimes, so overall i enjoy the vibrant colors and palletes of the snes, tho i do love the nes charm sometimes when used right it can also be very vibrant and very nice but wasnt done as much. also the depth of story, difficulty decrease and access to saves on most games is very nice on snes

I like the SNES more but I've played a lot more of it so it makes sense. I do think it's "better" but that's not fair it being the 2nd one

I’m closing in on 40 so I’m old enough to have played the NES as a kid, but the SNES was actually my first childhood console so it has a ton of nostalgia for me. It’s also got some of the most iconic games (with equally iconic music). Zelda, Mario, DK, Mega Man. It also has Mario Paint and the Super Game Boy! Super (see what I did there?) unique accessories! The winner goes to the SNES.

My first console and video games in my life childhood, was an Atari 2600. Once the Nintendo Entertainment System came out and i had the chance to have my NES; the Atari became too obsolete and replaced in no time. And never missed for him anymore ( even to remember it ) For me, the NES it's the best console of all time in everyway. However, i know the Snes. It's a great Machine, Superb Godly kind of games. No matter what to say. No excuses, the Snes it's and still the best system and games ever created so far, and not even the same Nintendo cannot matched it's greatness. Asuming for myself. I still prefer more the NES rather than the SNES. The Nes was my first great real Adventure ( even to this day ) And it's so Special to me.

The first system I bought was a regular NES used with 15 games from someone for 50 bucks in about 89 or 90.i loved that system I would play that all the time with Captain Skyhawk if I remember correctly. The SNES I bought used a little while before super street fighter 2 I think. I remember preordering that and mk 1 from the local video rental store. My favorite of the 2 would have been the SNES but if the NES games would have just been slightly easier I would put NES just barley above.

NES because I owned the console as a kid and, more importantly, it was my first experience playing any kind of video game ever. (I may not have even experienced arcades by that point, hard to say) I cannot forget how novel and new it was experiencing the world of video games for the first time. From SMB1 and Duck Hunt I was hooked.
