The Nine Road

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Nine Road is the busman's name for one of London's oldest and most used bus routes, running between Mortlake and Liverpool Street. The film takes us along the route on a summer's day, and shows the operation and control of the Number Nines from early morning until past midnight.
Narrated by Douglas Cameron

I worked on the 11 bus route the no9 rival for the most popular route in London. Mortlake’s buses were the best kept buses in London transport fleet , they weren’t clean they absolutely gleamed , a credit to one of the smallest garages in the fleet .

Love this video, I'll be driving RM875 tomorrow morning and watching this always gets me champing at the bit to get behind the wheel of these wonderful icons, I've driven fifty five Routemasters in almost twenty nine years including an e-Northern General RMF.

In the last shots we see the lady conductor walking home to Hammersmith, to close the film. Nice touch, but no cigar. When all other buses had stopped running, staff would go home on a staff bus, dropping off all over the place as required. I did a few when I worked at Stockwell in the 80s, it paid an hour or two in overtime.I then went home to Tooting on the N87 night bus. I enjoyed working on the RMs...Routemasters, on 7 different routes. When forced to go OPO, one person operated, I stood it for a few months, and left back in 86. The job was finished.

The number 9 was THE route up into town for me, and I would have gone up there at least 3 or 4 times a month back in the 70s and 80s. Getting on at Mortlake Garage and nabbing the upstairs back seat first was always fun! Such a shame when they curtailed the route due to Hammersmith Bridge.

What year was this made? Going by the cars and the people and the fact the white roundels started being applied in 1974 and there were plenty of buses with the gold lettering, I'd say late 1974 or very early 75. Wow the RMs were uniformly well kept back then!

A time when the London buses looked perfectly turned out, and perfectly matching each other in uniform, like soldiers in a regiment. Compare that to the 1990s London bus fleet, with private operators running a mixed rag bag of bus types in their own livery, and often two or three different versions of that.
