The Nikon D600, It should have been Perfect*, but now it costs less than the D700!

I was looking around for a D700 because... yeah I too like views, but then the D600 came up and the price was on average a bit less than the D700 and when I looked at the 2 side by side it seemed like the D600 was a slam dunk. That's when I remembered there was a bit of a bad reputation with some sensor dirt, we'll get into that in the video.
That being said, the at this point in time I think the D600 is amazing value, watch the video if you want to know why!
But here are a couple links to the troubled history of the D600

I bought a new D600 when they first came out. It had the oil spots and I sent it to Nikon for cleaning but the oily goo came back after a short while. By the time I sent it back for a second time the D610 was out so Nikon sent me a new 610 and that solved all my issues. It has worked flawlessly ever since. I have every Nikon I’ve ever bought since my first one a: D70. Sometimes I; “get out the old camera” and shoot it for a day or so for kicks. The D610 never fails to bring a smile to my face. The D6 is especially wonderful, as is, the D800e. I find the portraits of people are outstanding to this day. Thanks for the review.

It sucks to hear that your D600 was affected but I'm glad Nikon took care of it with the d610! Oh the D800e is very neat I do want to get one of those later to review. If I remember right it was their first one without an AA filter right? The trendsetter!

I see two differences. The CCD camera has an orange cast (or the CMOS has a blue cast) since those are the complementary colors, approximately. The other difference is due to the color depth of the new sensor. Imagine a camera that can show two shades of blue and a camera that can show two million shades of blue. When you use the two million shades of blue camera, you can smoothly transition from slightly blue clear to blue so deep it looks black and see no dividing lines. With the two color rendering camera, you will see the light shade of blue and then the dark shade of blue with a sharp dividing line. Of course it is not as extreme in the real world case. On DXOMARK, the Portrait score is color depth. For the D600 the score is 25.1 and for the D200 it is 22.3 (photons to photos gives the exact same measures), and these numbers represent the number of bits in color rendition that are discernable. In the bokeh, the colors are very similar in many places, so you are seeing banding due to three fewer bits of color depth.

I have the D610 and D700. I like the more modern features on the D610 but the colors are different on the D700. I think portraits are better with the D610 but flowers and landscapes look better on the D700. IMO. Thanks for the video!

I picked up a D600 with all the cables, manuals, software, 2 remotes and the original carton for $283 USD. It had a 40050 shutter count and it appears to be well taken care of. I don’t see any issues with dust or oil and based on the shutter count, this would have been an issue a long time ago. So far, images are very very good.

You are very concise in your summation of this great camera. The top and back plate is magnesium alloy with the rest being mainly polycarbonate but tough as a squirrels 🐿️ nuts 🥜. The pictures from it are outstanding and make it one of the best cameras Nikon has ever made. I got my one in 2012 at launch with the kit 24 to 85 mm lens and battery grip and it fits like a glove. I am only a simple enthusiast photographer who just loves taking photographs , but have never experienced the oil spot problem touch wood. I can imagine that the D700 is an amazing piece of kit it has legendary status. In finishing I wish you big success with your channel Sir because it is of an understandable high standard level with none of the hype.

I bought a second hand D600 about a month ago now, for around 330 EUR, including 1 year warranty. I love the camera. No shutter oil issues here. The camera is a joy to work with and the results are, for a camera of over 12 years old, still stunning. It's a serious upgrade compared to the D70 I had before. The D600 renewed my love for photography that had been slumbering for a few years unfortunately.

@@Mr50mmish It absolutely is. I could recover some lenses I still had lying around from my old F80 (which I also used at my D70) which made it a no brainer to invest in, compared to a new mirrorless fullframe option. I hope this one can serve me for another decade. ;-)

I bought one of these about 18months ago, on the offchance that the shutter had been replaced, and it was cheap. Plus, I wanted a way to use a drawerful of old Nikon glass from manual days, and most of the Nik DSLRs don't allow for that. This was the cheapest way of doing it. So far, I'm quite happy with it. The 24Mp is more than enough for my needs and I don't see me rushing out to buy anything larger any time soon.

I have put close to 100,000 frames through it since the service and all is good and it is still going strong. If buying used look inside the tripod screw socket on the bottom of the camera and if you see black Sharpie marker inside the screw socket then it has had the shutter replaced.

Thank you for your review. I’m not convinced that D600/D610 is a clear winner over D700. A couple of practical differences that make D600/D610 better: AutoISO implementation, Active D-Lighting now works with Contrast. But D700 feels like a different kind of beast. It has a dedicated AF-ON button, it has 1/8000s shutter speed it is a more solid body. I used D610 as my only camera for 8(?) years, and I have it along with a D700 with me now. To me, the best bargain on a full-frame Nikon is a D3/D3s. Now, these beasts are from a different league altogether. Totally agree with you on a D200. 👍

I have a D700 and I have a D3S. The truth is that although they say that the sensor is similar between both cameras, yes both have 12 MPX but they are worlds apart. The D700 generates soft and deep natural colors, achieves tones that I do not see in other cameras. Editing the D700 files is easy and the editing is minimal. As it is "soft" sometimes you have to barely touch the contrast and intensity if, for example, there is a very cloudy sky. On the other hand, the D3S generates files that even for my taste are quite warm, saturated and contrasted. RAW files already look edited when you first see them. I can simulate in editing making a D700 files like a D3S, but I can't do the opposite. Since the D700 is so special, I wonder whether to buy the D600 or have another D700 as a backup.

I have 2, D600 bodies and they work out just fine. The trick to getting a good used one is to look for a shutter count between 5K and 10K. Any shutter / sensor problems would have manifested by then. The D700 does live up to the hype. If you want the D700 experience but a much lower price, try a D300 APSC camera. You can get one in great shape for $120 to $150. The D300 is the best deal for a used camera out there. I have 7 of them because you just can't get enough of a good thing.

The oil spots are slowly coming back, but I haven't felt the need to clean it again after several thousand photos. These oil spots differ from sensor dust accumulation in several ways. 1 - They're pretty small spots, much smaller than dust spots, and only appear in the upper corner of the frame. 2 - Since they're so small, you can really only see them when you're shooting something stopped down closer to f/8 on a bright clear background (like a clear sky). Yeah it's kind of odd. I can get the logic. The D500 is the actual successor to the D300s many many years later. They probably skipped the D400 numbering for luck reasons. 4 being not a lucky number in many Asian culture. D600 is slotted below the d700 series because it had a more simplified control scheme and a worse AF module. Haha overall an odd naming scheme but workable.

  • @alwynsmit3546

I disagree with the AF being a BIG step up from the D90. I owned a D90 & a D7000. The D7000 is the same AF module as the D600, just adjusted for FX. With my D90 I rarely struggled with focus. When I got the D7000, I valued the 39 points up from the 11 in the D90. But that's where the awesomeness ended. In low light especially, the D7000 struggled & even shooting a subject in shade, would prove difficult for the D7000. People often think the number of focus points matter most, but that's not the case here. If Nikon did better with the AF, the D7000 would have gone down in history as the best APS-C body ever & the D600 would have been even nearer to perfect.

  • @Mr50mmish

    @Mr50mmish

Odd. Is it possible there was something funky with your D7000? It's not just number of points that's up, the number of cross type points and their distribution make it pretty useful compared to AF modules that only have the 1 centre cross type. Now I do admit I don't tend to massively tax the AF modules when I shot as it's a lot of fairly static objects and I'm not shooting sports lately. So I'm probably not the best example of a AF stress tester. That said when using the D200 (same AF module as the D90) I don't have a problem with that either, but I haven't directly compared AF performance. The only difference is that I am more comfortable using the D600's cross type sensors around the module. That said maybe I should have a better look at MultiCam1000!

It had a beautiful sensor & so does the D600, but Nikon really messed up with that AF system. Heck, they even put that in the DF. Also a beautiful sensor. I'm just not a fan of that AF module.
