I got to see Sammy Davis Jr in 1971 at the Westbury Music fair on Long Island NY. It was a theater in the round where the stage was in the middle and the audience sat in a circle around him. My seat was right next to the stage and he put on a magnificent performance. It’s so sad about the hate and abuse he suffered because of his skin color. His abilities and talent were absolutely amazing.

@bwbw1341 Westbury music fair is a great venue. I’ve seen many great acts there and the theater in the round and the sound system are great. Unfortunately, I never got to see the legendary Sammy Davis Jr., though he was arguably the best overall performer of his day.

@@clarkridlen1966 There are many entertainers on that list. You don’t need a obtain a recording contract, or a movie deal, if you make a deal with 👹 He does all the work. And all it costs is your eternal soul. If you believe in that sort of thing. If I was certain there was a devil, then I would also be certain there was a God. And if that were reality, I wouldn’t take the short term deal of fame on earth. That’s for sure. I would delay the gratification and reap the rewards later. I would worship the light, not the dark.

@someguy9519 I was born in 1963, raised in California. My parents and other relatives evidently shield my two brothers and myself of the things going on in the south. The only uncomfortable incident I've had was a third grade teacher telling me I do not have lips. Ms. Roach was not a good educator either. Recently, a relative told me that she and a male cousin gave her the blues. All these years and my favorite cousins put her through it. KARMA comes in many ways, even when you don't expect it😂😂

Whilst what he did was not good. He was pushed to the limit. After being threatened into marrying a woman he did not love, while being in love with Kim Novak and persecuted for it. Add to that all the racist abuse he suffered, he just snapped. He was not a violent man. They say that apart from the day he lost his eye, that forced marriage was the worst day of his life, poor man, but he triumphed in the end and became beloved by millions. Interesting to note that the man who did that to him, Harry Cohen died 4 months later from a heart attack. Karma?I I have loved him all my life. He truly was Mr Wonderful.❤❤❤❤

When he sang with the ratpack his ass was too black to have his own dressing room like the whitepack so during intermission he had to go sit outside by the pool or someplace else, and when the show was over he couldn't get a hotel room in any white area so he had to drive a ways to find a black hotel that would rent him a room. And when he met the accident that cost him his eye, he couldn't get a hospital room so they left him in the hallway, his white friend had to drive almost a hundred miles to the hospital to get them to give him a room. But the more white people disliked him the more determined he was to show them that he was just as good as they are by marrying white women and showing them that he had arrived.🙄

@@user-pg7cx9wo1m No. Double wrong. He was threatened by the mafia who told him they would take out his other eye (He lost one eye in an automobile accident) if he did not drop the relationship with Kim Novak. He married Altovise as a business arrangement and to stay alive. She was only contracted to stay with him for one year. But she became so entranced by that lifestyle that she refused to give him a divorce. That marriage was just to take the heat off by his marrying a black woman. There was no love for her on his part. By the way, he has written two books about his life. You can read them if you want to find out the truth.

Sammy Davis Jr. was way ahead of himself, his LOVE for WHITE WOMEN was unbelievable given the times of the 1950s his close friendship with Frank Sinatra allowed him many opportunities especially during these times of African Americans having no Civil Rights at all😮 but this didn't stop him from being more interested in associating with WHITES than those from his own CULTURE😢 how sad is that, he lived such an Extravagant lifestyle and would later die completely BROKE, all of the years of heavy SMOKING would cost him horribly health wise, although he married two African American women during his life, he still had WHITE women during his last marriage to Altovise in the 1970s he simply didn't desire women from his own CULTURE, how SAD😭.

You can't MAKE yourself fall in love with ANYONE; and in that show business culture, there were always more white women available than any other color. Besides, white women have ALWAYS tended to approach black men in show business and sports FIRST. You must be very young. I will tell you how you can find out how the real world works when it comes to high profile black men. You can read the biographies and autobiographies of those who are "high profile." You would learn a thing or two about your folks. White women CHASE out of curiosity. Men -- of ANY color --are not going to say NO when it is dangled in front of them. You don't know WHAT he desired from his own culture. Unless a person is very racist, they don't hold rigid opinions about what a person OUGHT to marry. People in show business are much much more adventurous and liberal in their sexual expression. They go to bed with same sex, opposite sex, both sexes, all colors. You have to READ READ READ to find out WHO and HOW those who are paraded across the screen REALLY are, young one.

Is there no mention of his marriage to May Britt?? If you read his autobiography, a huge part of it is devoted to the anguish they both went through living as an interracial couple. They were literally afraid to go out in public together and Britt was a virtual prisoner. But he was deeply in love with her. Why just mention Kim Novak? May Britt was also a well-established star in Sweden under the name of Maybritt Wilkens. I am not sure how long they were married, but I believe they adopted at least one child.

Sammy DVis, Jr. was talented in singing, dancing, tap, acting, and many different musical instrunents from brass to winds to keyboard to drums. Not many in his time did all that and that is what the racial discrimination was about. He never had to complain that he did not get performance jobs and have others force people to hire him because of the ongoing changes in tge music industry. He never had anyone such as Perry Cuomo say he thought he was joking when he sang such as was said about another member of the so called rat pack. Yes, they as Sammy Davis, Jr. put it would have been left him alone to live his own life if he left them alone and lived a more private life and not give THOSE PEOPLE all those expensive gifts.
