Before the ADB trilogy came out, there was "Lord of the Night" by Simon Spurrier. Following the exploits of a lone senior Night Lord Captain, recently released from 10,000 years in stasis, it really gave substance to the Night Lords lore, demonstrating how using fear was supposed to be a tactic, not the end goal. No spoilers, but when the Captain is reunited with a warband of his legion, he is disgusted. Well worth a read!

@@josephskiles I mean they called the primarch Curze rather than Kurtz and called the assassin who offed him Martin Sheen basically. The whole Horror speech is pure Night Lords. “Horror and moral terror are your friends”. North makes a point that other legions could do what the Night Lords do. But they couldn’t not really, their ‘honour’ would get in the way. It’s more honourable to burn down whole hive cities in a compliance then flay men, women and children alive whilst broadcasting it on all voxchannels for a day or two eventually the enemy would capitulate and millions, maybe billions would be saved.

With the Night Lords, it becomes clear that these Legions were first created to be Chaos Space Marines, then their loyalist backstories were written afterwards. Loyalist Iron Warriors and Emperor's Children makes some sense, but reverse engineering the NL never really worked. It's bad enough that the Emperor met Angron and said "It'll be fine, we'll just keep an eye on him". But allowing dudes with human skin cloaks to go forth with the purpose of reuniting lost humanity is really friggin stupid. The NL never made any sense as loyalists.

I would argue they make the most sense in some situations. Why wipe a population completely out when it can be taken over through fear? Every legion had it's place in the reunification, afterwards however it would have made no sense to keep them around, which I kinda think the emperor already knew and would have dealt with some of the legions that outlived their use

To answer some of it, and as a fan of Vulkan lives and the Konrad Curze book. The nightlords, much as its weird, the emperor needed an expendable legion to be the "evil and fear" at the start anyway. To the point they would be completely destroyed like the other two if needed. After finding Curze the legion was left to him and in essence he was given a poisoned legion and made worse as Nostromo made the great choice to send more criminals. Maybe it's me, but i enjoy that the mental gymnastics they need to pull to justify themselves. Konrad was broken from the start and couldnt even buy his own lies, the boy he needed to save always hanging over him, showing that fate can not be changed. He was a broken tool before even being made into the tool. His exchange with Vulkan said as much when he fought and tortured him. Yes, its a very comicly evil legion with a noble side buried under horrific actions and a predestined fate. I like your changes but i really do enjoy their current lore and as you said ADB made them the legion they should have been.

They are my secret favourite faction, yet all the lore youtubers to GW themselves hate them with a passion. Still, they are to me the very example of a Space Marine: zealots, divine and more than just warriors in big armor. If GW had kept their synergy with daemons, I might be playing them today.

I caught this almost at the end so had to go back and watch it. I can understand your gripe with recruitment of murders but the old saying about it takes a thief to catch one is how I look at it. I would also argue that during the early days of the great crusade the VIIIth was the most important legion. While yes legions like the world eaters or space wolves have their place what was needed was a legion that caused so much fear in a world that they wouldn't even think of fighting back. Why wipe out all of those valuable resources when cowing the population into fear would have accomplished the same goals yet left the population largely intact? Afterwards I could see something like sending in the word bearers to indoctrinate the population to keep stability. In fact I could see the triple combination of the alpha legion ( or raven guard) going into a planet to spy it out, the night lords breaking the world through fear, then the word bearers brainwashing the population as being extremely effective in the right situations where total war was unnecessary for the conquest of worlds. I don't think the corpse god intended there to be a place for the 8th in his grand design after the conquering was done but they were a needed tool with their purpose just like the other legions. What would I change? I'd give them back the option of a jump pack lord for one, the raptors and warp talons should be a much more prominent part of their lore as well

Interesting idea but I personally don’t like the alternative backstory you give. Like the idea of alpha legion wearing different colors during isstvan. Night lords are probably one of my favorite legions. I think the night lords as mostly perfect I think the only thing I’d change in their lore is they are more fleshed out with more books. The idea that the night lords shouldn’t exist I don’t really agree with as they make sense in a simple sense. The emperor is an arrogant fool. The night lords exist because all the legions are made for specific purposes. Yes a iron warrior could terrorize a planet pretty good but they will siege a fortress better than anyone else. Night lords are the police the justice of the imperium. But the emperor is a fool so when recruiting for the VIII legion he picked criminals because they are tough and intimidating. The emperor is to arrogant to see they making criminals astartes and giving them free reign to terrorize those who aren’t loyal. The night lords make sense and exist because the emperor and imperium are idiots and they can’t think about the consequences of their actions. Night lords should be honorable and just but they choose the worst possible recruits hence the evil that they have become.

I just want to push back on the whole "the Emperor is a fool" thing. While yes, Master of Mankind has made him pretty much just a moustache twirling super villain. If we ignore that book. And look at all the other material. It's becoming clearer and clearer, that The Emperor of Mankind was working under some kind of time constraint. There is something that we don't know that is "forcing" him to make all these so called "bad decisions". He is making trade-offs. My personal pet theory is that powering the Astronomicon is actually much much more difficult and soul shattering than we realise. I think based on the timeline of events as I understand them. That perhaps The Emperor had never originally planned on using the Astronomicon and the Navigators to traverse the galaxy. I believe he made the primarchs first, and only once they had been taken from him. Did he then move onto making the space marines, and lights up the Astronomicon and begins the conquest of the Sol System, and them moves onto the rest of the galaxy. In essence, the motivations for the Great Crusade as we understand it. Are all based on lies. The Emperor planned on building his Webway Portal first and foremorst, and using that to conquer the galaxy "safely". But in order to do that, he needed his Primarchs in order to help him navigate and control such a vast interdimensional system. Once the Primarchs were taken from him, he needed to quickly adjust the plan. This helps us explain why he lets like the like of Angron and Konrad operate 'uncontrolled' by him or someone else. He knows he only has 200ish years to get his shit together and build the portal before something bad happens. What that bad thing is, we know as readers, is very much likely him not being able to see into the future after he gets crippled by Horus. He probably can't see exactly what is going to happen, and or exactly what's going to cause it to happen. But he knows enough to basically set himself up for failure in a way that only the Chaos Gods could truly come out on top. Kind of like Dr Manhattan not being able to see into the future because of the technology using his own powers that he helps create, is turned on in the future.

They enforce the rules but go way beyond an eye for an eye, with zero tolerance. The only thing I'd change is Nostramo being such a hive of villainy. It doesn't have to be, it just has to have a normal level of crime to be intolerable to the legion. It's still a night planet and the NL still use fear as a weapon

I largely did not like the Conrad Curze Primarch book, but the one thing I did like in it fills in your gap as to the confusion of their purpose: So Nostramo was always a shithole, but the recruits taken from Nostramo in the beginning were of a better quality. They were taken from Nostraman nobility or the lower classes that either weren't violent criminals or they were violent criminals because they were products of their environment, think along the lines of the Sons of Horus recruiting from Cthonian gangs. But as time went on and Curze turned his attentions more and more away from Nostramo and to the Great Crusade, the Nostraman ruling class, consisting of old nobility forgot how Curze came to power and decided to stop giving up the best of Nostraman society and instead give the VIIIth legion the dregs, the worst of the worst taking the most violent and irredeemable offenders from prisons and insane asylums and this was done by a relative of one HH Night Lord character, Gendor Skraivoks cousin I believe. So that's why as the crusade drags on the ideals of the legion go from being a necessary evil, "make one planet suffer to spare nine" kind of legion with the same high ideals of justice Jago Sevatarion has to a rabble of psychopaths looking to get their kicks. As always I like your changes and how different you made them while still retaining the end product, being of course a chaos legion, fractured into warbands who terrorize the galaxy. If I were to change the lore of the Night Lords I would keep it more similar to how it is pre heresy. The Night Lords are the legion that forces surrenders and are in control of their faculties for the most part, unlike the World Eaters and because of their tutelage by the IIIrd legion, they have perfected the art of fear rather than descend into being a legion of criminals that use fear. Curze knows his legion is being rotted from the inside out by Nostramo and makes more of an effort to instill nobility into them. He takes criminals from Nostramo, murderers r*pists, thieves, all around psychopaths and when they are elevated to the ranks of the Night Lords, it is a baptism, they are born a new, their previous sins are forgiven so they can take their duty to the stars and not self interest, a legion not to maintain civility, but to bring it back through the only languages savages know; violence. Nearing the end of the crusade though when things are wrapping up, Curze realizes it's time for a reckoning and goes to Nostramo to bring an "audit". He goes down to his world, he talks to those left in charge of its care and finds that Nostramo has failed. He was suspicious when recruits went from thieves, gangsters to cannibals and now he is here to find out why. He gets an admission of guilt or as good as from the ruling class of Nostramo and decides that it needs to be brought into order. He tortures the nobility that failed the world and sets his legion about to bring to heel the criminal elements only to find out by the end of it that the majority of the world was as bad as it gets and to cover up his greater crimes, he decides to destroy Nostramo, to which the Emperor calls him to account of. Before making his way back to Terra on his own, to be brought to justice for his crimes he splits the legion apart. In this alternative timeline, the Night Lords are still seen as just dogs by their betters and they want to live up to their names as Night LORDS, they want to be apart of the Imperium and want to rule not out of selfishness, but because they believe that as being elevated to Astartes they are the only ones capable of ruling humanity justly. They don't desire grand parties, nor the comfort of women nor riches, they sleep in small, spartan cells, they fought to make the Imperium and their idea is that they'll continue to safeguard the Imperium after the Crusade so they should be the ones ruling worlds. So this is what they do, without the Emperors mandate they begin try to be the ruling class where these now primarchless warbands go. But then the Horus Heresy breaks out and they've jumped the gun. Legions already disliking them now put them in their sights. Worlds controlled by the Night Lords refuse to give aid to loyalists, not knowing whether a legion like the Ultramarines is for or against the Emperor and soon enough word of these disputes spread to other Night Lords warbands who now question being approached by any legion. Soon enough most of them are put on the run and displaced, having to adjust tactics to being raiders to survive, lacking the guidance of Curze, they slip and slowly forget why they fought, that they didn't do what they did because they were nihilists, but because they were idealists. Meanwhile Curze goes to Terra to have judgement rendered on him. He is the dark reflection of Crime and Punishment, he comes to the Emperor as a Raskolnikov. Broken and tormented by his actions, going between being a martyr for his cause to blaming his legion and he is brought to Malcador for a psychic communion with the Emperor. He speaks with the Emperor who assures him there is forgiveness to be had for him and the VIIIth legion and that he will go back to his legion one day, when they are ready to be forgiven to bring that message to them and that's where it ends for 30K

Well, I don't mind your concept, I think there's a few unnecessary parts, like nostramo being a former dark elder world, though I understand why you chose it, I don't think it's necessary. However I think you explained what the Nightlords are within your concept, whilst claiming they don't have a place in the current lore, or no purpose in their original creation. The Nightlords are sick parody, that is their place, they are the raven guard that make it very obvious why their targets are punished, rather than merely assassinating, they make example. They apear as senless violence, but are infact unmistakable cruelty, cold hard judgement, executioners on a conventional scale unlike the spacewolves. The very depiction of necessary evil.
