This John Deere JA62 push mower is about 15 years old but it looks brand new. It had a gummed up carb from sitting but after a carb clean it is running good again!

Well, I have this same exact mower. I made the mistake of taking apart the WHOLE carburetor, ie the needle valve, pin, and cleaned it. My co-workers laughed when they heard I took the apart the carburetor because I guess that needle valve is like the ring from Lord of the Rings, One Needle Valve to rule them all. In this case since I messed with the needle valve I messed with the ratio of fuel and air and now it won't run. So now I'm going to try and mess with the needle valve to find the right position for it to run. good times

I just picked one up for free.. no fire. Needed coil and trans work. Could use new rear wheels w bearings and drive gears.. it runs great just needs 3 prime pushes and 3 pulls. Sometimes it needs 4 or 5.. can't sell it like that. Think I can get 250 for it

The first gen Quantum OHV engines are hard to get right whenever you have carb issues. If it won't start at all you may have an issue with the ignition coil or a valve that came unseated in the head.

I really dislike those early Briggs OHV engines, had nothing but trouble with them. The design is such that the fuel will inevitably leak into the crankcase through the valve instead of out of the front of the carb even if it’s just a little tiny leak. They also use oddball gaskets and carbs and they often don’t run quite right no matter what you do to them. I had one of these last summer that had a hung-up compression release, it would just about break your hand when you go to start it. Had to pull the engine, split the crankcase open and repair the release on the cam gear. It worked fine after that but I was glad to see it go and I’ll never pick up another one. Very nice mower, engine not so much.

I'm right with you on these engines. I sigh each time I have to work on one because they often give so much trouble.

Remember, It's only worth what someone will pay; that goes for anything. It needs to be running perfect if you ask that much. It does not have a side discharge which will also bring down the price. Most people want the side discharge unless you live in a rich subdivision.

They don't make any good aftermarket carbs for them which makes fixing a leaky carb difficult.
