The NHL's Most Disrespected Prospect

Спорт

Shane Wright was 2022's consensus number one for years. Wright starred for the Kingston Frontenacs, working his way to the top of rankings. However, after the likes of Juraj Slafkovsky, Simon Nemec, and Logan Cooley showed off their potential in 2021-22, Wright's stock began to drop. Since draft day, Shane Wright has been jerked around by the Kraken, but still managed to impress at the AHL and OHL levels, and win the world juniors in 2023. Today, we look at the short career so far of Shane Wright, and break down how he can still live up to that top pick potential.

Wright had a goal and an assist in 8 games with the Kraken, He did not "bounce around". The Kraken guided his development to give him a variety of playing scenarios. He'll be fine. He's only 19. Give the kid a chance. This is junk reporting.

thank god someone pointed this out. Definitely not good reporting. Wright had like you said 1 goal and 1 assist in 8 Games in the NHL

I think the only thing I disagree with is that you said the Kraken mismanaged him, Shane definitely needed more time under his belt to develop and I don't find that to be disrespecting him, if anything it shows they care about his progress and development. He is still young and I am sure he will get the full chance he deserves hopefully next season.

I couldn't believe how little ice time he got for Coachella during the playoffs. I'm a Bear's fan and went to all 3 Calder cup games at home, and they gave the kid 4th line minutes. It was ashame because it would have been exciting to see him play more

They don’t want to just punish players who have been there all year though and remove them from their lines that have chemistry, he was getting 3rd line by the end of the run, and the coaches want players to earn their spot, that’s pretty good to go from No to 3rd line that fast

To say that Wright did get a chance in the NHL is absurd. He got 7 games yes he's 19 at the time and every time on the ice being flanked with got insulating veterans like Yanni Gourde and Brandon Tanev. Wright turned the puck over nearly every time on his stick. He didn't hustle to the D-zone. It just seemed like he was a fish out of water. So the Kraken didn't wanna burn his rookie status so it took some creative movement. I do think Wright will be fine if he gets out of his own way and curbs good arrogance. That i do think was his biggest hurdle was his immaturity

The Kraken got to see, and Wright got to experience, his performance at multiple different levels. They worked as many angles as possible, bending the edges of the CHL agreement to get him that breadth of that exposure, but ultimately were handcuffed by those rules. Mismanaged? No. Shane got maximum exposure to life as a pro player, several months practice and tutelage at the NHL level, a couple of months with Dan Bylsma (who had Crosby for formative years) and AHL coaches, and got to Captain his country to gold. Even if he got 20 minutes TOI per game playing every game, that time would pale to all the exposure and learning he got to do. Shane will be fine and will be a better pro after all of it.

All these kids are finding their way now- byfield, laf, slaf- and they were thrown in thr deep end. Wright was an elite prospect to begin with and Seattle/Coachella have handled him perfectly. Hes still two years out at least but I believe this added development time qill pay dovidends down the line- love how theyve handled him....

Just to give a sense of how Wright and Slafkovsky are relative to the 23 class that got drafted.. They probably would have been drafted in the low teens (I heard this from one of the NHL draft anlysts on TSN)... the 22 class was a weaker class in general.. people just think simply because you are drafted at the top that you are pretty good.. but there are variances between quality of player from year to year..

This video is a fairly good review of Shane Wright's professional career thus far, but it misrepresents or misinterprets the Seattle Kraken's player personnel management decisions for both Shane Wright and the team as a whole. The Kraken proved throughout the regular season and the playoffs that they had excellent depth with a lot of good journeyman forwards who rightfully earned their spots in the lineup, including Ryan Donato, Morgan Geekie, and Daniel Sprong who have all moved on to other teams where they will earn more money and have new opportunities for success. They were valued in Seattle and will hopefully do well with their new teams. In Seattle they proved their worth and made it difficult for Shane Wright to make the cut. Kraken management and Shane Wright made the most of a difficult situation and now are poised for a successful and exciting run in the 2023/2024 season. Contrary to this video's claims of mismanagement and disrespect, I think most Kraken fans know that Shane Wright gained a lot of valuable experience that will likely help him make the squad in his second season as an important Kraken prospect. 0:01

Dude, click bait and bad take here. Signed Kraken fan. Would you rather him be a healthy scratch at the NHL level? He's likely gonna spend a decent amount of time in the AHL this year pending injuries on the team. He's not good enough to crap the top 4 lines

Slaf, also, could be, lotsa things. Roll the dice, just like our doctors do; for big pharma, gov, &/or/hopefully helping patients. The dif is, scouting & development. But, still a guess.

Wright wasn’t robbed of development years. He chose not to go play in other leagues. Because he thought he didn’t need to.

I hope his maturity develops to match his skill, he did not provide a good look during the draft process, but I put that at being young & cockey. Hopefully he's learning along his journey as I wish him the best.

Every player and coach who has been asked about him the last year has said nothing but amazing things about the leadership he brings on and off the ice. He did one interview before the draft where a leading question got him on film saying he deserved to be first overall and the story has been he has a bad attitude. Cocky guys with bad attitudes don't get the C, especially for team Canada in the World Juniors. Your best scorer doesn't need to be your captain, look at Austin Mathews, no one is asking that guy to be captain. That's what a cocky player with a bad attitude looks like. Worst case Wright turns into a second line center and a key locker room guy which is important for a new team trying to find its identity like the Kraken.
