The NFL is Considering a Quarterback Salary Cap

Ойын-сауық

The NFL is seeming to recognize that quarterback contracts have grown out of whack compared to what other NFL players make, and they are now considering a separate salary cap for quarterbacks to remove this inequity. I say, it's long over due.

It’s about freaking time they do that. I understand the position is important but getting over 3mil per game is ridiculous and it seems every new contract has the number going higher. It’s like a competition to see which QB can hamstring their team the most.

I think we've all seen this very personally with RW3 up here. These QBs are honestly nothing but straight criminals if you ask me and they are literally robbing their whole organizations which honestly really does decrease not just their team's actual value in dollars but the NFL as a whole. One player should NEVER be able to hold a whole organization down, it basically turns the QB into an autocrat, and given a frigging, what, 25 year old by the time their rookie contract is over, just plain way too much power. If they're talking about it, then it IS going to happen, guarantee, and it's going to be an absolute LITERAL game changer for the sport.

This will never fly. What NFL can do is take a page out of F1. There should still be a salary cap but teams should be able to exclude up to 3 members from the salary cap. Then teams can pay their star players well at the same time ensure their average players also have a decent living.

Why not giving each team a franchise player who doesn't count against the cap? Teams with a QB would choose the QB, teams without a QB would choose a superstar they want to keep for life.

It's an intriguing idea. The owners might be the ones to push back on it, if it forces them to fork over more profit percentage, but the fans and the players would love it.

I would think a "separate salary cap" wouldn't necessarily mean less money for QBs (would the NFLPA EVER agree to that?) but a different accounting that will allow teams to play quarterbacks this money without crushing the rest of the roster.

It could be that, HoneyChile. I would think the purpose of considering instituting it would revolve around, at least to a degree, getting the contracts to a more feasible place. Otherwise, I'm not sure why they'd want to put it in, other than maybe to limit future contracts from going to crazytown.

@@thehawksnestclips I understand what you mean, I think that's what we'd all think in a perfect world, but these startling new salaries for DEs and WRs are driven by the high quarterback salaries. While a quarterback cap might, ostensibly, spread the wealth to all players, in reality the ceiling is continually raised by these lofty QB numbers and WRs get $35M now because QBs are getting 50+. So how do you sell the NFLPA on the notion of actually capping the ceiling for players? Not to mention all the agents who are getting filthy rich if they can just land ONE starting quarterback in their stable. Every No.1 receiver in the league is about to get $30M+ from now on, every top Edge player is gonna get $30+M from now on, the LTs will follow suit, and then all the mediocre guys are gonna have a much higher mediocre salary because of the high ceilings and team needs. I can't imagine what that argument would be to convince anyone to restrict that. "Hey, if you let us pay the highest-paid players less, we PROMISE we'll pay everyone else more!" "Yeah, sure you will." So it would make more sense to create a situation where you wouldn't have to account for 100% of your QB in your overall cap or you even had a separate cap for the QB position. (Which will of course lead to abysmal backup play, which I can't wait for because I love seeing the NFL land on its face.) Anyway, you may be right but it just seems like an awfully hard sell to say, "we wanna start paying ANYONE less". The NFL is always about MORE.

@@honeychilerider I think what you will see is the quarterback salary capped at a certain percentage of the overall salary cap. This would not lower the total amount of money going to players, it would just allow teams to spend more on the rest of the roster, spreading the money around to more players.

Why do QBs who have longer careers get max money after 3 years ? When they have a much better chance to get a second contract.

@@thehawksnestclips I think if it is someone like Trevor Lawrence the team should be able to offer him 3y 35m a year or something like that. And if he improves during that time to top level just get another contract after. Lawrence getting the same as burrow is comedy at this point

Exactly. The money is finite, and so when the huge portions go to the QB's, others take the hit.

I mean QBs are generally the hardest and most position in sports... so I get why they're paid high. It's just insane to me some of the contracts going around for mediocre or average QBs. Daniel Jones, Trevor Lawrence? WTH? Even Lamar Jackson is good in the regular season but does nothing in the playoffs (despite having one of the best defenses in the NFL last year), etc. Watson being out of the league for a year, Wilson fell off big time in 2021 and had multiple injuries. Due to his finger issue he lost a lot of touch and his mobility was nothing like it was from 2019 (I think that was the year when he also got an ankle injury after a Suh tackle), yet both were given massive contracts. Just baffling to me. NBA has max contracts and it's been for a while. I dunno why the NFL doesn't do it. And if you guess wrong - your franchise is screwed for a while all because of ONE player/position.
