The New Youngest Self-Made Billionaire In The World Is A 25-Year-Old College Dropout | Forbes

When Massachusetts Institute of Technology dropout Alexandr Wang made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Enterprise Technology list in 2018, his startup Scale used artificial intelligence to begin automating tasks like image recognition and audio transcription. Back then, its customers included GM Cruise, Alphabet, Uber, P&G and others
Now Wang, 25, is the youngest self-made billionaire. And while he still partners with buzzy companies, today he’s got $350 million in government defense contracts. This has helped Scale hit a $7.3 billion valuation, and give Wang a $1 billion net worth (as he owns 15% of the company).
Scale’s technology analyzes satellite images much faster than human analysts to determine how much damage Russian bombs are causing in Ukraine. It’s useful not just for the military. More than 300 companies, including General Motors and Flexport, use Scale, which Wang started when he was 19, to help them pan gold from rivers of raw information-millions of shipping documents, say, or raw footage from self-driving cars. “Every industry is sitting on huge amounts of data,” Wang says, who appeared on the Forbes Under 30 list in 2018. “Our goal is to help them unlock the potential of the data and supercharge their businesses with AI.”

For those of you who actually want to understand WHY he is worth a billion -- a little technical. Machine Learning has been around since the 1970s in various theoretical models. The difference between ML/AI today and then is that the mathematical models themselves, via Convolutional Neural Networks, are already formulated and proven to effective -- the big one was Google's language translation in 2012ish times. This approach is 1000X more effective than traditional AI systems based on things like decision trees. The secret to understanding CNN is to not understand it because "learning" in most instances is doing various feature engineering techniques to gain a better fit on data. Literally, it is a engineer adding or subtracting a parameter to the model and letting the model converge to the data set. This is a specialized area of ML called Deep Learning. From a engineering standpoint, the amount of work involved to build something like Google's language translator was 10% software engineers and 90% linguistic experts in multiple languages building a MASSIVE data set to push through the model. In a sentence, the data defines the model that is used for AI applications. Good Data means Good AI. Wang's company markets, with various engineering lingo, to traditional engineering markets like the DOD and automobile companies. Essentially, the company markets a "Machine Learning Development Life Cycle," to these firms which the engineers at these companies say, "Hey Mr MBA/Bureaucratic manager, look at how this service speeds up our engineering life cycle by speeding up this hot/buzzing new concept called ML/AI portion which investors love." In reality, Wang's product is only doing one thing which is building tools to help construct "Good" data sets. In essence, all these companies, sort of like the NSA, have been accumulating massive amounts of data that has massive potential to be valuable if it were clean -- this is called big data. Wang's company is sort of like a cleaning service that also sells mops and buckets for institutions that got lost on their big data journey. There are 1000 companies like him but his is the Venture Capital Corporate one that is chewing up the entire market place. Personally, I dont see this company growing beyond catering to defense/DOD where big tech isnt allowed to enter due to conflict of interest. Because in reality, this is just a way to improve the quality of Data/Amazon turks employees where the company doesnt have the capacity to hire real software engineers.... In my opinion, Scale AI belongs in the data/software/tech category of "Military Industrial Complex" that goes along with companies like Palantir, and maybe Andruil. I swear, the reason why he is this successful is because his parents worked for the government. National Interests like National players.

I was with him until he mentioned the doctor issue. You are messing with HIPPA laws and what not trying to get data to look into peoples health history and currently the lack of the populations trust now with big tech, Facebook, Google, etc. those companies worked because back when they were formed people in general trusted each other and the government and trusted that information to be safe. The pharmaceutical industry would pay big bucks to get that data from AI companies incorporating the AI into the very untrusted and corrupt pharma Industry. That's just one issue of the few others he mentioned like the DOD and lack of trust people have for the military industrial complex today. Until AI can earn peoples trust I'm just not confident how well we think AI is going to be implemented.

But trying is so much better than saying ‘I always wanted’, ‘I wish I just tried’. You can dream, dreaming is easier, but those that try to achieve the other side of the mountain will struggle and sometimes fall. But they don’t fail, you learn, and you just continue. I feel like you’re seeing as it, the goal was to make lots of money with what they wanted to do. But I’m talking about passion, interest, and willpower. One can be self taught, learn a trade while working as an apprentice or whatnot, and continue starting an own business. You don’t have to be rich to be successful, I wasn’t talking about that. I was inspired by the way he’s interested in what he does, and he knows his stuff, and he knows how to sell it. Many uncles, aunts and my parents self are all business owners, some have a huge revenue, others it’s more local, but they’re all proud tradesmen (and woman) who sell what the are best at. Ranges from solding, iron work, furniture design, art, etc. Don’t forget those dreams either, many people wish they continued doing art but went cooperate just because it was the norm. It's the path I chose because the topic I work in is so darn interessting. Just because I hop from country to country as I change positions constantly, doesn't mean I am unsuccesfull. Meanwhile, my homefriends are buying houses, cars, get married, getting kids, than there's me who's still a 'forever' student with no stable income. I think success and happiness don't look all the same, I know dropouts, from incredibly smart people but whom just hated studying and following the expected format of universities. I mean some of them just work in stores, became storemanagers, or changed jobs to a higher position because of their work experience. It's not easy, but when you do something you're good at, being it working in sales, you can ultimetaly become manager or teamleader of certain trajects and still have a decent income, one would only expect to receive when having graduated with a masters degree. What I am trying to say, there's no right or wrong path. And if it's unconventional, doesn't mean it's wrong, it's just different approach. And if it didn't work out, who's stopping that person from going back to uni to still get a degree after all? There are so many late 20's/30's/40's students out there, wanting to change their profession and just studying parttime to get that piece of paper to eventually work in a field they dream off. But many wouldn't even dare to do that, because it's scary, it costs a lot of energy, and what if you fail? Failing is part of the process of learning, if you never go for it you are a far bigger failure than those that try. If I had to follow words from my teachers I would never have been able to get a PhD position, and yet here we are, a woman with ADHD, dyslexia, and dysculculie going to step into a 3/4 year traject to get her Doctorate. With the right mindset, passion, and dedication a lot of things are possible if you just try. But, you are also right, there are people that drop out and just wither. But when I see those people, and they're everywhere, they often don't know what they want to do, what makes them feel happy or passionate. They just work because they have to, but they're unhappy doing it, and when they get back home they still complain about everything. One does need to see the oppertunities, and see how one can reach their dreams. But if one has no dreams to begin with, everyhting you'll do will be boring and unsatisfactory. Maybe that difference is lightend by our own personal curriousity and willingness to learn, and quite possible not everyone has that as much as I have that. So it's really hard to understand how that is perceived and works for others in different situations. Not sure if that last section makes sense? But overall, I enjoy watching people with a passion for a certain topic and just proudly sell it. What's not to like? (Longest answer ever, sorry, it's my tic, neeed to be as precise as possible).

And look at me at 25 years old, barely breaking my way into the tech industry. I am envious of this man. And I feel disappointment in myself. I could have been maybe not like him, but somewhat close if I would have made better choices in my youth. So many people are leaving me behind in the pursuit of success. I must work much harder.

I think focussing on the long term implications of AI is necessary in order to anticipate future bottlenecks, but at the same time I understand the frustration of the interviewee who wants to have a short-term results as well. I’m glad he could already implement tangible and very useful AI applications to help solving some of today’s big issues.

What a dumb thing to say. You clearly didn't get his point, but you still had to voice yourself to feel significant. He's stating that too many people focus on the future in hopes of opening their eyes to focus on the now. If 100% of all AI engineers focus on the future then nothing will ever progress in this field. Please take this as a note to never voice your opinion again.

To all those parents and family hustlers out there that are pushing for a business or a goal that seems so hard with the weight of responsibility, anxiety’s, bills, health etc, men and women like this guy are able to firmly set a time and schedule to follow their dreams, you set a goal, eg, learn python the whole way through don’t give up when it’s hard or expensive, push, and apply to jobs that require the service you’ve consistently maintained, it’s harder for people with heavy responsibility in their lives to become successful and maintain that success but it is possible
