Do a TEST PIECE FIRST! This video has great tips and tricks, however the net result may not be what you think. Do a small test piece first to be sure you are going to like it. For our project the loss of depth and detail was not acceptable and we really wish we had tried a tester first. A valuable lesson learned.

Just got done with my 3rd countertop and used the UTC Gloss. I made sure to follow the instructions precisely to ensure minimal texture. Unfortunately, the customer felt the texture took away from the dirty-pour effects. Will buffing the surface with the seres of sandpapers in the SC buffing package provide a smoother, glass-like effect?

I do love my countertops and as a first time DIY they came out beautiful, but if you’re going to epoxy then yes you must apply a topcoat as I thought epoxy was super scratch proof but they are not! Applying this now!

I am having to redo my stonetop countertop because the filter on my coffee pot fell down into the grounds, thirty minutes later when I went to get my coffee there was a big mess and my countertop had a huge stain. I was able to lighten the stain the first time it happened but after the 2nd time it happened, I guess because the heat from the coffee softened the epoxy. In addition my grandson left a jar of pickles on the countertop for several hours. It stained yellow. I made my countertops to look like marble. I wish I had heard about the gloss top coat before I had gotten the original.

Great video as all of your other ones. I just bought the ultimate top coat Glossy yesterday. Can't wait to try it out.. Had a mishap A month ago I ordered the Gloss top coat BUT they sent me the regular matte top coat. After I put it on one of my counters I realized the error the next morning. No gloss regular matte. . Now I guess I'll be doing some sanding with 220 grit to remove top coat ? So glad I just did one counter as a test. 20 sq ft is better than 50 plus sq ft

@@RK3Designs I ordered it from stone coat. Turns out they sent the right stuff. On part of the bottle it said Matte and way above it it said Gloss. I used it and did not like the heavy texture finish. I sanded it all off and used your new way to apply the top coat misting counter ahead of time and using a lot more water maybe more than double the water. Then as you did I kept adding water till it poured off mixing stick easily without laying on surface. It came out very very glossy and very smooth to the touch. It still had that grainy texture look put other than that I love the result and added protection. It's been a month since I finished my counter pour and my wife and I are still in wow ! wonder amazed at how pretty they came out.... PS My wife was DEAD SET against me doing the Stone Coat Counter Tops. She wanted to spend $6000 - $12,000 and have them installed I'd rather 100 % do it my self

The UTC had a somewhat visible texture like I explained in the video, but you can’t feel the texture. If you didn’t apply the UTC and just left the epoxy it would be absolutely fine. However the amount of added durability, scratch and heat resistance you get with the UTC is incredible. The tiny bit of texture is worth the benefits you get. 😊😊😊. I appreciate the question and you watching.

Great video - we did our countertops in 2020 before there hi gloss option was available so it only has the flood coat on it. We have a couple of scratches in it from things being slid across it with something sharp under them. Will this fill those scratches and if not how should I deal with them before doing this to the counters? As for staining we have found that colored alcohols like moonshine cherry juice and bitters have stained it but with a little bit of elbow grease and soap and water we have been able to get it out. We have also had sausage casings stain it but same thing it came out with a little bit of effort. Love your videos - thanks

The Blue Curaçao is probably only a surface stain as I don't think it can sink into the epoxy. Try taking 1 part bleach and mixing it with 2 parts water. Pour a little on the stain and let it sit. I have done that with food stains on laminate (red chile) and you can watch the stain disappear before your eyes. You may want to put a few drops on the countertop first in a dark corner to see if the bleach does anything else to the Epoxy first, but I don't think it will.

Is that top coat only applicable to something that is already epoxied or can it be used on other surfaces like wood or on a painted surface, such as an acrylic pour? I'm going to create a tabletop with an acrylic pour. I was going to add a fairly thin coat of clear epoxy after allowing it to dry for several weeks, but if this will work directly over the paint, I'd skip the epoxy pour. I also have an old wooden cabinet I am making into an outdoor plant stand which will get wet and also lots of sun. Can I use the top coat over bare wood or stained or painted wood?

@@RK3Designs This statement is very helpful. The UTC Natural was way too matte. Maybe for a dull slate/concrete look, but it looked too plasticky to me. The Gloss was out of stock so I did my installation without UTC. I love the deep gloss shine. I am extremely careful what I place on the surface and usually put down a paper towel first with anything metal. The penny test would really mar the surface. I would never use a Magic Erasure on the unprotected epoxy surface which dulls/micro-scratches the gloss based on my test sample, but would easily work on UTC Natural and Rhonda's UTC Gloss. Even some dusting will scratch the unprotected epoxy (Phoenix desert dust) so I use a Swiffer duster first before wiping with spray. The counters are in an RV that is used a few weeks/yr by old adults so being careful is not that much of a hassle. I would likely use the UTC Glossy in a home kitchen although I would hate to loose that deep clear gloss shine. For deep gloss, maybe best to admit that a new top coat with the original epoxy would need to be poured after a few years of heavy use, maybe much like having to reseal your natural stone every few years.

Rhonda we poured UTC and used 3/8 knap and no dry roll. Do you feel that pouring a second coat over the first will help elimante the roller marks and the dimple texture that happened?? Also, on small top did not set up hard. We can cut it with a razor. Thoughts? Great video. Thank you!

  • @RK3Designs

Using a 3/8 nap roller and not back rolling with a dry roller will definitely cause texture. You’ll need to sand with 220 until the surface feels smooth. If not, you’ll still be able to see the texture. I’m not sure it will ever get hard enough to not cut with a razor. I’m pretty sure I can cut most countertop material with a razor. 😳
