If you came out of the last hundred years ,out of colonial Barbados, you lived around alot of family. Not having a father around in every case did not means there was not good guidance. We came out of a time when the statement raise by the village had meaning.

The problem with the young people is that they lack three basic elements.1.respect 2. pride and 3. Spiritual upbringing (which created a fear of God).As a result we see a don't caring attitude being displayed which leads to all kind of problems. Most parents of these troublesome youth are enablers. Then there is another type of parent who refuse to stamp their authority within the household, and as a result the young children become disobedient.

Bajan man here really exaggerating the crime thing in Barbados. Barbados is still one of the least violent countries per capital in the world. Yes there is concern when young men get their hands on guns and start shootings each other, but this the exception and not the rule. Bajans are peaceful people and still know who their neighbors are. You and say that when Bajans here of a shooting it is scary for them because it is not normal in or society. But to talk as if it is the norm and people are hiding from criminals is just sensationalism. There are plenty better crime ridden places to focus on. I mean Barbados was a place in the 70s and 80s is you had 5 murders in a year that would cause major concern. Now with drugs and guns we struggle to stay under 30. But there are places in the Caribbean way over 500 murders year. Having an international discussion on crime in Barbados is like having a discussion on gold mining in Barbados: waste of time. There are way more impactful and interesting things to discuss, like the impact climate change is having on the island, why is there so much sargassum weed and how to get more fish back in our ocean. How to train more students to work remotely for better pay? But what are we to expect to come out of this conversation that would bring up back below 5 murders a year.

Your denial doesn't make the conversation false or the negative changes in our society disappear. Whether our crime rate increased by 2% or 10%, it's still an increase and therefore, those changes must be addressed. By addressed, I mean dialog between house holds I.e family, communities and the country at large. Even if Barbados is seen as a less violent country than 90% of all nations combined. Still doesn't mean that the level of violence displayed now. Doesn't required attention and action. The days of well it ain't happen to me and my community so it is not as wide, it a joke. Unless we all blind, we do have an increasing problem here, and we can nolonger hide our mess under a rug.
