Back in 1989 I saw this musical in London. Starlight Express opens with this song. It knocked my socks off...such a bad ass way to open to musical like this.

What will be like if most of the songs were used in Digimon during the first and second seasons? That would've been brilliant in my opinion.

I wish the track would begin a few seconds earlier when the kid announces "the US of A", that's the proper intro.

I'm just the fastest thing you'll ever see. That streak of lightning you just missed was me. Don't stop now, we gotta keep it going all night. Rolling Stock! Rolling Stock! You got no wheels, you don't know how it feels. Rolling Stock! Rolling Stock! You got no lovers if you got no wheels. Don't try to show you can go faster than me. This is my back view and it's all you'll see. Don't stop now, we gotta keep it going all night. Rolling Stock! We're Rolling Stock! So get the motion in your wheels somehow. The racing action's starting here and now. Don't stop now, we gotta keep it all going night. Rolling Stock! We're Rolling Stock! Rolling Stock! We're Rolling Stock! Rolling Stock! We're Rolling Stock!

It's a fun musical with some catchy tunes but it's not highly respected as musical theatre. In fact, many people think it was originally created as a joke although there is little proof of that. Have to admit there is a lot of sexual innuendo throughout this musical also. It's just a silly, fun little play that is looked down upon by real Theatre Purists.

Believe it or not, this show was actually intended to be a musical adaptation of the original "Thomas the Tank Engine" books, but the creator of Thomas, Rev. W. Awdry, refused to give Andrew Lloyd Webber permission to do this because he felt that Andrew wanted 'too much freedom' with the characters in the books. Well.... If what I've read of the story line, and heard of the music is what Webber had in mind for (Sorry to quote Nostalgia Critic, here) THOMAS THE FUCKING TANK ENGINE, then I'm GLAD Awdry refused, cause this story and score(Despite being great, on it's own merit at least) is one of the most banally cliched, overwritten, over appealing, nonsensical bout of 80's synth cheese I have ever seen(I mean seriously, The Starlight Express is the train equivalent of God? WTH?!?!!). A lot of people in the Musical Theatre may loathe Webber's other known work, CATS(Webber's Yang, Stephen Sondheim(Best know for Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Company, etc.), especially), but Starlight Express is a work I utterly despise, Along with Miss Saigon(Yeah I said it. There's no way that show, for all the talk of what everyone claims of it to be about, is anything more than a cliched "distant lovers" story set to the end of the Vietnam War; a war that is WAY TO COMPLICATED not to share just a little bit of information about for the younger generation who have no kind connection, to really understand how much of an impact this war actually had on the U.S., or even Vietnam for that matter. Honestly, I hate Miss Saigon as much as everyone hates Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor") Anyway back to Starlight Express, if you enjoy it that's fine, if your into Musical Theatre and enjoy this show or other shows like this as well, that's fine too, but for me, this show can suck it.

One of the great things about it is that it gets kids and others who might not ordinarily try theatre to become interested. It's gotten a lot of people into theatre. I always find it arrogant and stupid when people think one show is more "theatre" than another. How? Under what criteria? Just because something isn't as serious or has some unusual elements doesn't mean it's not theatre. It's such a closed minded and stuffy view.
