The new Silk Road - Karakoram Highway Pakistan || Riding from Sydney to London - EP 17

We venture further into Northern Pakistan along the Karakoram Highway. This road is made for motorcycle adventure!
Starting off at Phander we follow the Gilgit river towards Gilgit until James unfortunately gets another flat tyre. A quick fix sees us off to Naltar Valley in some rather wet and cold conditions, but it was definitely worth it. Passing livestock and traversing snowed out roadways and eventually having to ride along a riverbed, it was an adventure we weren't expecting at all, but turned out to be a highlight of the trip.
Northern Pakistan is without one of the most beautiful places that we have ever been fortunate enough to visit. One look over the Hunza Valley will leave you speechless. It feels like every corner you take there is another beautiful view.
From Hunza we head towards Passu and get some good photos of the Passu Cones before setting off on a rather challenging trek to the Passu Glacier and then James crapping himself at the height of the Passu Suspension Bridge.
All of this happens in a matter of days. A jam-packed overland motorcycle adventure on our Suzuki DR650 Steads.
Enjoy

Thanks James and Jay for taking me on a fabulous journey. The filming is just wonderful and your adventurous spirit shines through always. Your interactions with the locals are always illuminating and entertaining. They serve to prove the adage that "the world is full of good people" when you treat people with respect and openess - as you do. I love your laid back, " let's give it a crack attitude". Well done lads. It's great to see you getting the attention that this adventure deserves.

Pretty excited to see another upload gents! Thoroughly enjoyed this one; it’s like the KZread equivalent of crack! Quite a few chuckles too- Pakistan seems to be a really high point (no pun intended) for the trip. Love the adventure, love the effort- must be so cool to reload the footage, to edit it, and be transported back there, with enough time in between to reflect on how amazing it all was.

Again always straight in there with a comment, love it. Yeah it's fun and sad at the same time watching the vids, it's scary how much you forget about trips like this. I'm just happy we have them forever now so when I'm old and stuck at home I can sit back with a beer and remember the fun we had. We were blown away with Pakistan, kinda sad how the media portrays them, I'm sure there are bad parts but 100% of the people we met were amazing. Our next few countries continue to impress for scenery, you just wait for Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Thanks for the comments as always.

That whole area (the Northern mountians) is the complete opposite to what the media seem to suggest and there are so many local bike clubs which will help you out with advice etc too. I'd seriously consider just landing and hire a local bike, it will do the job and arguably make for more of an adventure. Failing that take your own and spend 3 -6 months exploring the other Stan's too as they won't disappoint.

Once again, great video. Pakistan is now on my bucket list for sure. I do not see any security issues there. I love the "walk" to the glacier, something that I would do too :-). Two questions today, what tents were you using, and how happy were with them, would you take them again? And, your drone batteries, how many did you have, and how were you charging them? Hopefully the next video will be out soon. I know it is a pain, I have footage from years back, and so far I have not been able to put anything together...... need two or more lifetimes to do all the stuff I want to do :-(

Hi David, glad you enjoyed it and definitely add Pakistan to the list it's an incredible place and not like the media would have you believe (well from our experience anyway) 1. I had the MSR hubba hubba, it's not cheap but has lasted me years and is great for hiking which I also do. Jay had an aussie brand similar to mine, slightly cheaper but wasn't as sturdy in the wind. In short I'd choose a 2 man hiking tent for biking strong, sturdy, durable and compact. Get a 2 man so that you can move around a little and store your items inside too. 2. Drone batteries we had 3 in the end I think. We always tried to keep them topped up charging in our backbox when we were riding. On average the batteries lasted between 15-25mins depending on conditions. We filmed a short video awhile back on all things camera gear and equipment which should be out soonish. James

Amazing trip guys, it's really inspiring the ol wanderlust, especially considering you're using the exact bike I'd always dreamt of using for a trip like this. I recall you mentioning plans way back in episode 1 but I forget the specifics, is this a trip that has concluded and you're working through the video or are you still on the road?

Hi Oliver, yeah the DR650 is the bike to go for on this type of trip. Bloody love that thing. We were lucky and actually finished the trip just before covid kicked off so lots more videos and issues to come were just very far behind on editing and its a really time consuming task, we will get there though. Thanks for the support

I've watched the documentary "rebuilding the KKH" by the combination of mainly Chinese engineers and Pakistani involvement by drilling tunnels ( a safer option) through the treacherous mountains to avoid the constantly falling rocks. The first time it took to build this KKH in 1960 which claimed 800 over lives of both Chinese and Pakistani workers who used only basic materials and equipments. The 2nd time was a lot better with new technologies but it took just as long due to such treacherous terrains and after an earthquake created a lake.

Friends, motorcycle tires need to be deflated when traveling from plains to plateaus. At high altitudes, the air is thinner and the external pressure on the tire becomes smaller, making it easier to puncture.

So good to watch as this being one of my dream to trip around the Northern areas of Pakistan 🇵🇰 so much to learn from you and your videos. I am sure you enjoyed your trip, the landscape, the mountains, the people. Just a little suggestion to add some survival tips like food, water etc so newbies like me can learn and overcome their fears and enjoy these majestic lands. Thanks for sharing again.

Hi Muhammad, thanks for your comment and support. Worryingly the only tip we have is eat what the locals do in busy restaurants and you can't go too far wrong. Water involves a little planning but in northern Pakistan water was available in many places but always take more than you think you need :) Anything else you want to know jusy let me know
