    This company is doing such a great job! Thank you! Some things that can be done - 1. Audio over USB both sides and stereo XLR outputs so that you could just take the keyboard, laptop and a midi cable, use the sounds in the laptop which could come out through xlr outputs of the keyboard. Basically a built in sound interface. 2. Weighted keys. Everyone's waiting for this. 3. Just give one reaallyy good piano sound if possible. Which could come out of the XLR outputs so the keyboard would be usable in professional settings on its own. 4. Midi type C if possible. 5. 73 key weighted keys option 6. An optional sound module that could extend seamlessly with the keyboard with atleast a really good Acoustic grand piano sound, upright piano, rhodes E.P., B3 Organ, pads and strings. Again, a HUGE thanks to this company. Finally someone's listening to us gigging pianists.

    I have a DGX-670 and it's a love hate relationship. My audio from Pianoteq is coming out of the Laptop into the DGX via the USB MIDI cable and plays through the internal Yamaha DGX speakers which are good. The bad news is the DGX is as heavy as a military tank, and I don't consider it portable at all. Also I hate the overly complex kludgy OS on the DGX which can waste hours of your time. I don't use any of the DGX automation, or even its internal sounds so this portable Piano de Voyage would be much more desirable. I'm really curious as to just how good Pianoteq is on the iPad (Pro). It's very good running natively on Linux. The Piano de Voyage needs a music rack that can securely hold a large size tablet.

    For sure, Joe, agreed! Just keep in mind the sound I’m playing here comes through the computer. The built-in sounds are more basic so I personally recommend connecting it to a mobile device or computer, and using the built in sounds as backups.

    Highly impressive this keyboard seems but I have to say Noah's jazz piano technique is even more impressive than the keyboard. I find myself turning green with envy as at my time of life it's too late to develop a playing technique as good as his. I'm not in a million miles of a talent like this - and he wasn't even showing-off just giving a very fair account of the article. Brilliant stuff.

    For key action there must be better ways than springs. Since the 1980's there is now the availability of super strong permanent magnets, so if someone is really smart they might be able to simulate gravity and momentum with attraction and repulsion. Alternatively reduce the weight and size compared to a full size piano with angular momentum? Might get expensive if you need to store the energy in capacitors or use coils, but as long as there isn't active power shouldn't eat batteries. When the piano was being developed, it was about the same era as the balance spring, still a marvel.

    Once the developers of this keyboard find the way to make at least some kind of weighted action, this will be perfect keyboard for traveling piano player! Also, it would be very nice if they could make some kind of deal with Pianoteq to install just one of their pianos by default. That way, you could go to a gig with just this keyboard in your backpack! Amazing! Well, if there is keyboard stand provided where you're going 🙂 Oh yes, is there possibility of running on batteries? I think it's must-have feature for this kind of keyboard. Or at least possibility of supplying power via USB, so that one can use power bank.

    Since you’re clearly a very talented musician and keyboard artist, even on full-size weighted, digital keyboards one of the greatest flaws is due to the lack of a long key in a fulcrum in the middle. These all have springs or counterweights, even in the weighted keyboards, but it affects, the repetition rate if you were to play repeated notes. Could you do a video where you focus on what is the repetition like for repeated notes on this keyboard.? I’m a classical keyboard artist, but I have wanted something more portable to be able to do gigs, in certain circumstances where I just don’t have the ability to cart around a real instrument, or for whatever reason, not even a weighted keyboard, which is still a compromise, to acoustic instruments, at least those that are in good regulation. I play a lot of Baroque music and specialized, basically in historical keyboard instruments, from the clavichord, the Harpsichord to early pianos. And I use Pianoteq as as Kontakt, and whatever digital keyboard, I’m using, the repetition rate is always slightly problematic, in addition to if you’re playing deep in the keys, the amount of force required to play towards the artificially induced end of the keys pivot point, which is no longer a pivot - the point of balance of the fulcrum, like a teeter totter in a real acoustic instrument. But the short keys regrettably, which seems to be the fashion of the day for the last 10 years in digital keyboard making, logarithmically increases the amount of force. If it is playing pop, rock, or even the very elegant jazz passages you were playing, this is not problematic. But, if one is playing in keys with complex passage work, or even ornaments, that require one to play deep into the sharps or flats, sadly, this is a great limitation. But some are better than others and so I’m curious about how this is. The M audio keystation 88 is very good despite it having a spring action but it’s really still big to drag around! A couple of pieces, which are extremely good examples, for instance, are the D major prelude from the first book of Johann Sebastian Bach, Well Tempered Clavier, and the C-sharp, major prelude from the same book. These are always test pieces that reveal the action especially in respect of playing deep in the keys and having to play fluent relentless material. And again, there’s the issue of repeated notes, and how well they can be played on a digital keyboard in general, but the portability is very attractive! Even the $4000 Casio hybrid fails the test of repeated notes! (Scarlatti Sonata in D minor in 3/8, K. 141, is one of the very good t tests for repeated notes) But I would love to see what this is like, and your reviews seem to be very insightful, and you have a good solid technique where I think you could illuminate these things wonderfully. I think a lot of people would be helped by that review. Since I have students who travel, and they have wondered about getting one of these foldable or now, modular keyboards as well. As the moment I can’t get my hands on one of these to really try it out, but I would love to find something that is passable in terms of its mechanical abilities, but made up by its immense portability! Many thanks!

    The thing is I am always running it through MIDI actually. So I haven’t tried any direct speakers, but have you tried using a D.I.? That could solve it. I’ve been using the new version for a while now and it is definitely an upgrade in terms of reliability and sturdiness, big improvement for long term usage (so far). Also looks a little cleaner and more modern as well.

    Your model as reviewed here appears to be the “Model A” but with some updates. Piano de Voyage announced a “Model B” with “compact hammer action” at NAMM 2022, to be introduced “soon” and selling for more like $1500-2000. That is still not on their website. Can anyone provide information or updates on the promised “Model B”? Thanks.,

    In my use case, I don't care about portability a lot. But this modularity means if one key stops working, I don't have to return or carry the whole keyboard for repair. Just one module I change which is 3 times cheaper. This is why I am drawn to this.

    I have so much respect for they way you approach your review by being honest. I have been bitten so many times by people who review items and give a great response because they been given the product and they're more like a representative of that company and will say anything to get you to buy a product because it's in their interest and not yourself. Honestly and integrity goes a long way in my opinion ❤

  • @NoahKellman

    @NoahKellman

    18 күн бұрын

    Hey David, what I’m doing is connecting it via USB to my computer. Then with a program like Logic or Ableton (or garage band), you can easily use it. When you create a “software instrument” track with a piano sound, it should automatically allow you to play it with your Voyage.

    But it will be safe and solid if are placed over a common X stand for keyboards, playng classical repertoire such Liszt or Ragtime?

  • @NoahKellman

    @NoahKellman

    6 ай бұрын

    Yeah it works great with an X stand (only modular keyboard I know of right now that is sturdy and strong enough to work well with an X stand. With regards to playing Liszt or Ragtime, that depends on your preference. It has velocity sensitivity and it works well, but there is definitely a trade off for the portability. The keybed does not compare to a weighted keyboard as it is spring action, so just keep that in mind. I personally have no problem sacrificing the action for the incredible portability (depending on the gig and what’s needed of course), and depending on what kind of transportation I’ll be taking.

    I suggest you’re ignoring the relatively higher per-unit total costs involved in manufacturing, marketing and general operational overhead for niche physical music technology product companies. This is a specific product that’ll get sales numbers that the likes of Roland and Yamaha would consider rounding errors. If you are the kind of gigging piano player that truly needs this level of portability, I suspect the price - while not cheap - will seem worth it.

    I booked a flight to the west coast recently. The estimate to take my relatively light weight Roland RD-88 was nearly $300 one way. Soooo glad I was able to carry on my pianodevoyage (older version) free of charge. This kind of portability is a no brainer for me price and value wise. Really looking forward to receiving the new version.@@justinmccamish9059
