    I still very much admire Andy's record for the same reason as the new Andy mentioned. He just went out for a Saturday morning run in normal shoes without pacers etc. So it really much elevated his efforts, because it took a full team and modern carbon plated shoes to beat his "casual run" record. So for me these two records are not really comparable, they're absolutely amazing and mind blowing in their own way but shouldn't compete against each other.

    Who is he trying to kid ‘it was just a laugh, it’s all a bit of fun’ and then saying he didn’t want to break the record by a huge margin. Why couldn’t he say ‘I really went for it and really wanted to break the record’. You don’t have 6 pacers for a bit of fun. Badders is the true hero here! End of story.

    After finding this channel recently and watching a LOT of the older videos.. 2 years old..3 years old..it’s great to be only 4 minutes after this one is uploaded. Sorry for your loss Andy. Your record was incredible. And it continues to be an incredible time. That it held for 4 years shows what an impressive time it was. And will motivate you to find your best running self in the time ahead through your recovery. You work incredibly hard and that’s what has got you the results. Good luck to you in future, hope that you can get the record back but well done to Andy Butchart (must be in the name) who took your record for their incredible personal achievement. Thank you to the Running Channel for continuing to bring excellent content. I love this stuff as I’m on my recovery back and feelin the running fire. After a few years out with personal health issues I’ve fallen a LOT but want to get it all back! And your content is an inspiration and makes me want to keep pushing forwards. Thank you. They are very emotionally charged and will fuel you for the miles to come. The bus journey is pretty long to the start so make sure to catch up on some extra sleep or just relax but try not to look out the windo too much as you’ll see much of the route!

    Listening to the description of how he had dropped pacers early and then picked them back up as he passed them at 3.5km to 4.5km. And to say they made all the difference. I would say that shouldn't stand as a parkrun record as its definitely not in the spirit of parkrun. Even with official world records you can't have pacers jump in to the event.

    Totally agree, it shouldn't count as a parkrun record, in the same way Kipchoge's sub-2 hour marathon doesn't count as the marathon record because of the artificial assistance he got. Having pacers is fine, but not when they drop in and out because they can't keep up!

    Some more context to the western states record: it was set in 2012 and nobody has been within 20 minutes of it until now. The 2nd place woman, katie schide, was also under the previous record. It's a hot race, but this year was much cooler than average

    Immensely impressive to have held the record for so long. And arguably more challenging course and equipment wise. Some potential interesting follow up videos - how long do records stand for in running, testing the effect of pacers on 'normal' runners, at parkrun, and whether others could make equivalent PB improvement as Andy did that day in 2012.

    Edinburgh I made 32nd fastest in the UK in my most recent fastest/slowest list. So, on a reasonable day, that is pretty quick and probably no more than about 10 seconds slower than the ones above it bar the one at the very top (Pegwell Bay) that is somewhat short of 5K. Bushy Park only 115th but that partly reflects all year conditions not bone dry summer grass/gravel trails when you don't lose too much IMHO.

    parkruns are great and brilliant but i dont think timing is their forte. you have to pick up a position barcode then make your way to the scanning post several yards away then scan your id barcode and then scan your position barcode. i am not among the first to finish but i dont see it can be much different for first finishers; for all i know it may be better at other parkruns, i have only done the one location

  • @amymackay5828

    @amymackay5828

    Жыл бұрын

    @@koukouvaniait's not as accurate as a race with chips but the time is typically taken by at least two time keepers so your official time is when you cross the finish line, not when you scan the barcode. As long as everyone picks up their finishing barcode in the right order it's decently accurate. When I have been the time keeper my partner and I are less than 0.5 seconds different for each runner. Not bad for a free race

  • @nath9091

    @nath9091

    11 ай бұрын

    Bit late but yes as someone who's done timekeeping they can be accurate to sub 1 second especially for the first finisher. Basically you press a button to start the timer when the Parkrun starts and then again everytime someone crosses the finish line. This doesn't take implausible levels of reaction time as you're waiting for it. If you timed a friend running between two points you could probably get less than a second difference. Problems come with pressing too many times, short/long courses esp with seasonal or unexpected course changes, problems on the token end e.g. someone leaving the finish funnel without a token and one not being put aside and a few other reasons but the frontrunner will be pretty much bang on.

    Bushy Park was just his home park, he probably didn't even go out there trying to get a record.

    Andy's record would have gone long ago if more of the world's best did Parkrun but they choose to only run on the big stage and not at community runs. Eliud and Mo Farah would easily get under 13 minutes at Parkrun but they don't feel thats worth doing

    Mo Farah has run at Bushy Park, just way off record pace but yes, a shame more world class runners don't give us some low 13s. I doubt Mo could now run a sub 13 anywhere let alone a parkrun course. yeah - watch out for other park users as some early morning jogger is doing 2'36" pace - hahahaha

    The usage of pacemakers should be illegal in a parkrun It's supposed to be a fun run and skill of the person running it

    How on earth would you manage that? Parkrun is not one thing - let people run/walk how they want - it is just a bit of fun after all! I've paced my son to his first sub-30, and today, my other son paced with two of my friends aiming for sub-20. I regularly use other runners I know as "pacers," even though they don't know I'm doing it, and some parkruns have pacers with target times on their back.

    Parkrun pacemakers should only be for set times: e.g. sub-30, sub-25, sub-22, sub-20, sub-18 for dragging keen people to a target PB. The pacemaker must run all the way.

    Yes. Cruise vs Craig. Cruise is the best movie runner ever. Pierce Brosnan as Bond - worst.
