Absolutely crazy and a chaotic time in Indonesia's history for sure. My father was in Jakarta when this happened. To make matters worst he was of chinese descent thus he was targetted in the chaos by mobs. He had no idea where to go as the whole city was basically a battleground, he had no means of communications to contact his family members, and he can see the mobs from a distance pillaging the stores. My father drove around for a bit in the city to find a temporary place for him to take shelter but he had no luck finding a suitable place to hide, eventually he opted to stop in a bus station, as he recalled the place being quite empty, however not long after, a homeless man from the bus station came to my father and persuaded him to go somewhere else and leave the bus station as the homeless man can see the mobs coming straight to the bus station area and the homeless man knew for sure that the mobs will attack my father because of his chinese descent. My father took the homelessmans advice and rushed to go somewhere else. At this point he is understandably stressed out and still confused on where to go and what to do, all he can do is drove around in the streets of Jakarta and try his best not to meet countless mobs in the city and hopefully find a shelter before his car fuel runs out. He then stopped once again on a seemingly empty street without any signs of mobs whatsoever, it is also at this time that my father met a guy who offered a shelter at his house, this guy's house is at Ancol (Located in the Northern part of Jakarta, and this area was supposed to be mob free or atleast not too infested by mobs). This guy knew the safe routes within the city, so my father and this guy arrived safely at this guy's residence in Ancol, my father finally managed to find a safe place to take shelter until the violent riots in the city had stopped. Truly without these two gentlemen, the homeless guy and the guy who offered my father shelter, it would be unlikely that my father would have survived in those crazy old days of Soehartoe's presidency. My father wishes he can meet these two gentlemen again to say thanks once more as he owes them for saving his life.

Terribly hard times for chinese descendant indeed. One of my father's family even got beaten by mob although he's clearly Nias and not Chinese Descendant, all because he's white and has a.decent job.

coming from a malaysian of chinese descent, i can relate to this as my maternal great-grandmother's house was targeted by the mob during the may 13 incident. they had petrol bombs, bricks, and stones thrown at their house (a balcony had caught fire as a result of this). to avoid being lynched by the mob, they had to flee to the local under-staffed police station; from there, the local police officers had to provide them a temporary refuge to them from the mob (keep in-mind they only had WW2 era rifles and some handguns). whilst taking refuge at the station, a group of rioters had shown up with parang knives and other types of blades. knowing that my family was in there, the rioters persisted to be let in, despite the police shutting down their requests. a couple hours had passed since that and the group had dispersed. (this parts a little bit foggy) shortly after this, my great-grandad got them back home, finding some torched areas of the house and remained in there. the government then instated a curfew, but whoever was out during the curfew was either arrested or shot (in-fact, one of my grandmother's neighbors was shot through their balcony window after standing towards it). water was cut as an attempt to quell the riots in the more rural areas of KL which made it challenging for my family (it was hard to get water from their home). till this day in 2022, my grandmother is still grateful to those officers many years ago who allowed them to stay at the station.

My dad was in the country at the time. He told me that westerners were all planning to flee the country cause they were afraid of being targeted. In typical British fashion, he and the other Brits decided to meet at the pub to discuss what they should do. They decided to take their chances and stay, but that they'd meet back at the pub and plan they're escape if the Americans started leaving (what he calls "the warning sign"). A few "meetings" later and it all blew over by the time they sobered up.

The late 90s and early 2000s were definitely one of the craziest times in Indonesia just to name a few: 1998: Banyuwangi ninja massacre, basically similar to a witch hunt, where people lynched hundreds of alleged "sorcerers" in their homes and paraded their decapitated heads around city center. Before they kill their victims, they would mark the victims houses with a large red x mark. The killers were called as ninjas because they often wear black clothing that would cover their entire body 1998: this whole riot thing (The infamous 1998 Indonesia riots) where hundreds of looters would be locked inside shops and then burned alive, mass rapes of women throughout the streets, chinese-looking natives would cover their heads so they wouldn't get hacked to death, many cars were stopped abruptly just to see if the drivers were chinese 1999: Sambas conflict, sectarian conflict in Sambas, Borneo where the local Dayaks and Malays joined forces and killed 3,000 Madurese and paraded their heads around 1999-2003: Ambon conflict. Sectarian conflict erupted in Ambon with both Christian and Muslim militias fighting with each other throughout the city, children were told to hack their own friends (literally children as young as 10 y.o are ordered to kill, hack and burn people, they are called as the cicak team), churches and mosques were torched, people were beheaded or shot dead by arrows in the middle of the street. Christians had to wear headbands or red scarf, muslims wearing white cloth on their wrist for identification 2000: Walisongo massacre. Hundreds of students from an Islamic school in a city in Sulawesi were rounded up and beheaded by Christian militias. Infants were also slit by militias. The river near the site of the massacre later got clogged due to hundreds of bodies that were dumped there. This later led to a protracted civil conflict between Muslims and Christians in Poso, causing thousands of refugee from both sides. The Christians later sough refuge to the mountains in Central Sulawesi, while bombings happened here and there thoughout Poso. 2001: Sampit conflict. Another sectarian conflict, this time in Borneo again involving two ethnic groups. Initially happened in the small town of Sampit before it spread throughout the province, even reaching the capital. Hundreds of Madurese, even the elderly, were hacked to death, got beheaded and their heads were paraded around towns Not to mention the conflict in Aceh and Papua,, the 1999 East Timor referendum and the subsequent crisis which in turn caused the forced resignation of BJ Habibie, the alleged coup of Abdurrahman Wahid in 2004, It's amazing that this country doesn't suffer the same fate as Yugoslavia

Yep, all true. A handyman (tukang) that my grandpa used to hire since the early 80s went to Sambas in the early 90s and start a life there as part of the government transmigration program. He's Madurese like my grandpa. In 2000 he went back to my grandpa's house and was telling the story about how he escaped. I don't remember all the story as I was only 6 at that time, but I remember some part about his story as it was VERY scary for a 6 year old: - that he eventually escaped by hiding inside a truck in between the goods, under the tarp commonly used by Indonesian small trucks to cover the goods. - That before he got into the truck, he saw a family of 2, a husband and his pregnant wife, both Madurese obviously, having their head cut off in the distance by Dayak people. He could see them grabbing by their hairs and bringing their heads back somewhere.

As an Indonesian, I am amazed that we don't turn into break up because of this, unlike Yugoslavia

My aunt legit has PTSD since she was there in Jakarta during the 98 riots. She remembered people banging violently on her door where she lived at the time and being scared for her life. She still shiver and shakes whenever she sees a large mob of people, which is why she lives in a rural mountainous area since then. Our Manado descent means that we're more light-skinned than most Indonesians and often gets mistaken for being of Chinese descent. Man, they had it rough.

This was some wild times, my mom's neighbor tried to steal my grandma's stuffs in the middle of the night, and the general store behind the house was set on fire because it was Chinese owned. Also, funny story, but the reason my mother didn't participate in the big protests in the center of Jakarta was that it was way too far to walk lol

The looting during the uprising was insane. In one of Jakarta's oldest and largest market called the Sunday Market (Pasar Senen), people looting the stores had the gates locked behind them - some say by plainclothes military/police types - and dozens died in the inferno. On top of all that, there was also a resurgence of Chinese Indonesian hatred and many businesses owned by Chinese Indonesians were torched, with many of them also personally targeted by the mob. Crazy times.

@@slappy8941 It's hard to say, and violent unrest happens all the time. Kazakhstan, Burkina Faso, Sri Lanka, among many others just this year. Civil unrest has a wide variety of causes, and there is no one singular answer for what causes it. It's inherently tied to the current state of a country/region, its economics, politics and culture.

The fast roping marine at 3:05 reminded me of an article called "Secuil Kisah Lucu di Balik Kerusuhan Mei 1998" an interview with one of the heli crew by Historia. Basically the first 3 day was a fluster cluck (obviously), the heli crew told to fly first then told where to go and who to pick up. 2 marine died on a fast roping incident "Black Hawk Down" style said the crew. And a rock thrown by the protesters pierced the heli fuselage because it bounced off one of the propellers

90's was a crazy ride for us for sure. Dad is a retired army sergeant. A few years before shit hit the fan, he's getting deployed in East Timor, operation Seroja. When 1998 happens, he's just a few month away enjoying his stay in my hometown. When the riot starts, the military order all of the member (including those that just got back from Seroja) to go patrolling around the town. Lucky my town is mostly consist of old people and retired military/police member. There's a few riot here and there, but it's not as bad as our neighbouring town.

1990s in the second and third world are something else, far different from those in the first world.

This video is posted 3 days after the Indonesian independence day Talk about timing Also, being Indonesian myself, my parents actually took part in this event, but as far as I remember, they didn't do any rioting but they live in constant fear that the authorities will try to arrest them for participating in this "demonstration". I salute them and the people that stood up to the regime that restricted the freedom of its citizens and arguably the most corrupt regime in the world.

My father was a First Lieutenant in the Army during ‘98 and patrolled in Semanggi during the riots, he said that it was hell on earth

I remember during student protest in Imam Bonjol Street, there were students from University of Indonesia driving his 70's VW beetle crashed his car into Police barricade, many police injured

During the heated circumstances that precedes May '98 by months, some ethnic Chinese even took drastic measures such as converting to Islam and by the time of May '98, put up signs with "pribumi"(native) written on it to avoid being confronted by possible looters, or simply took refugee in a native's house that also put the same type of signs... Horrible times, indeed.

I remember reading somewhere about a Malay guy in South Sumatra. Malays are kinda white compared to the rest of Indonesians, doesn't help that he happens to have slanted eyes. He's Muslim. So to avoid being disturbed by the rioters, he went to the Mosque and recites the Qur'an during the entire riots. He said "if they come to me I'll be able to show them that I am Muslim native and not Chinese". Also I got told by an old guy from my previous office (in the area around Semanggi, that green skyscraper, if you know you know) that at the 1F of that building, a rioter was running away being chased by the ABRI. He was shot dead on the spot. My boss (who had been in that office since 1992) ordered that no one should go home and stay at the office, for their own safety. So they did.

I was six years old during the riots, my pops worked for my uncle's real estate development company in Jakarta. I was staying just south of Sunter, in North Jakarta, in one of the apartments my uncle and dad helped develop. At one point the government troops actually showed up and took over the roof and the upper floors of the apartment building. Benar-benar gila! I of course didn't notice a thing, I was six years old and was totally oblivious...though there was more damage and injured homeless people in the weeks following than usual...

Thank you MajorSamm for covering this iconic reformation event in my country. Indonesian's reformation movement in 1998 is a very important day and event for many Indonesian. It is the year when the true power of Indonesia's government came back to the hands of the people since the current president at the time, Mr. Soeharto became a dictator and running the precidency for around 30-32 years. My mom used to be the government's office employee during that year. She needs to be careful and hide at one time when she got off from work because the rioters are looking and hunting any officials-related peoples because they see them as the supporters of the corrupt dictator-like government at the time. Many military personnel among the police also hide their barret hat to hide their identity, but not for the marines. That's why until this day, the Indonesian marines still beloved by many Indonesian. Other than that, thank you very much for making this video. I've been subscribing and waiting for around 2 years for Indonesia-related video, so thank you very much.

Appropiate song use, the writer of the song is the godfather of protest song in Indonesia. I was fortunate enough during the times my parents (who are Chinese descents) have nice neighbours eventhough we are the only Chinese-Indonesian and the few non-Muslim in the area (this is in Jakarta btw, not really far from the epicenter of rioting). I realized this is a rare case since almost every Chinese descent friends that lives in Jakarta have a traumatic story about their relatives being robbed or abused. Rough times for every Indonesiam citizens, especially who lives in the cities that have riotings

I don't think he'll do Trikora one, there's just way too few footage since most military operations conducted ended in failure & Trikora's success was mainly achieved through diplomatic means instead of militaristic.

This enabled Indonesia to reap the benefits that western aligned nations were experiencing in the region with economic miracle after economic miracle. Then when it all came crashing down after the fall of the Soviets, Indonesia didnt have to contend to facing a new political reality but instead just have to change the government

my dad was a student who take part as a protest organizer in my city, once a time the mob was faced with the riot police and they were clashed heavily even the army send the armoured vehicle to disperse the crowd. luckily the racial riot did not happen in my city, our city is very far from jakarta and java

Honestly, The 1998 riots is just the EDSA revolution gone horribly wrong. also my aunt (who is chinese) once told me a story that where she lived during that, every day during the riots there would be people from her neighborhood going out during the day and returned during the night (sometimes until the next day or the day after tomorrow lmao) and bringing a shit load of tons of electronics, furniture, foods, shirts. heck someone even brought back a god damn motorcycle! man it was truly a crazy times. (also how my aunt survived the riots despite being chinese remains as a mystery for me. she probably kept a good relations with the neighbors or idk)

I mean to be fair the riots started cause cops shot univeristy protestors. There was no way it wouldn't get violent. My Chinese grandpa and family was also safe because I think they took shelter inside the houses of "orang inijen"😅

if you mean Indonesia, Iwan's stuff is pretty good from all I've seen, I learned of him from "Celoteh Camar Tolol dan Cemar" and his stuff overall is quite "ear-wormy" (reminds me of like the Ballad singers of the 1970s here like Gordon Lightfoot in a lot of ways, especially with aforementioned Celoteh Camar Tolol, but also 1910 and Sumbang)

The song is made by legendary Indonesian singer, Iwan Fals, mocking Soeharto's regime and family, Bento is a reference to Benny Soeharto, Soeharto's son, eventually after the May 98' riots, Soeharto stepped down and a presidential election was held, B.J Habibie became the third president.

Majorsamm must've been do a massive research before making this video. Why? The song whole meaning is fit to the 1998 event... especially the political one. Soeharto's reign causes the nepotism, and corruption to a rise among the government.. especially to the military one. The song name is "Bento" by Iwan fals.. which the whole lyric is describing the corruption among the government civil service deparment (we called it DPR "Dewan perwakilan rakyat" or in english is a same meaning of House of representatives or People Council representatives). But in this context.. not only the government but the military commands are somehow corrupt.

Crazy times at the dawn of a new Millenia, it's a miracle that our country actually survive this ,👍
