Alain Locke was a philosopher, historian, educator, writer, and influential thinker in the mix of American intellectual life from the 1920's to the 1950's. Distinguished as the first African American Rhodes Scholar in 1907, Locke was the philosophical architect -the acknowledged "Dean"- of the Harlem Renaissance.
