Actually there are a lot of written and oral records of ancient civilizations that used tons of brightly colored material for decoration, design, etc. We just think of it all being muted and bland because that’s what time and the sun does to things: it washes them out and they get dirty. So finding these brightly colored blocks makes sense in Minecraft where only copper changes via oxidation over time.

You have to be reasonably capable to reach the cities creating a skill barrier to block the light hearted
I do feel they're setting up a story between these Hosts, Wayfinders, and Shapers. From all the Ancient Ruins, I'd guess the Wayfinders were seafaring explorers, the Hosts were caretakers and site managers, and the Shapers are the official name for "the Ancient Builders". Maybe the roads of different sites used to string together and create paths to the deep dark. Going with that line of thought, the portal like structure actually used to contain a giant map that displayed huge areas. Then there is a way to recreate the map which would help locate other types of sites to go robbing... I mean exploring and doing archeology searching.
Ya know, I was kinda neutral about trail ruins. Like, I was looking forward to finding them, but not as much as some other 1.20 things, but after you showed them off, and explained them a little more, my hype on it is definitely up. Especially for that purple room. I'd love to find that and make a mini hideout there. Dig it out and build it back up. Hopefully putting these in those old biomes is 1 step closer to those biomes getting updates. At least we finally have something to find in a birch forest.

What’s great abt how archeology works in the game, is that you can tell what an item in suspicious sand is before you actually completely brush it. So if you see beetroot seeds, stop brushing and break that sus sand/gravel block to save on inventory space
Low tier loot is only a problem/junk because the inventory is terrible. You're right, we need the bundle. We may even need more. I saw the loot tables at this place and thought I'd likely chuck anything outside the trims and pot shards, stuff I'd usually keep but when I'm travelling, I won't have room for. What we need is smart storage INSIDE the inventory. Imagine a tab that opens up for stone types, candle types, carpet types.

Love these structures! Can’t wait for the update!
Fun fact: If you want to brush every possible block you actually have to dig out the ruins all from the top. Because if you dig out the main room and then from their dig in direction of the trails on the bottom, it can happen that you destroy the suspicious gravel blocks, because you make them fall.
Super excited to try these out and can't wait to hear what they say the lore is !!!!! Also love the change on finding some building blocks now more often then just in certain biomes again like terracotta either a Mesa or you need collect clay this addition of the trail ruins helps out allot when you cant find a Mesa and or don't have allot of clay to spare for a build :) and the colors omg give me Mayan and Aztec vibes. I honestly want to excavate one of these and make my base in it!!!!!
Using tool of stone will be much more useful in these sites, that way I can reduce the risk of breaking the sands with the loot.
I found an exposed trail ruins while experimenting. So i went into survival with an shovel, pickaxe and brush and excavated the whole thing. It was really fun and the thing looked great.

oohhhh the flyover at 6:48!!! You can NOT tell me this was not the ruins of an old village! The 'trail' was an old paved road. The 'rooms' you find off the trail are old houses, and the loot you find inside of the houses are exactly what archaeologists would look for and find! Honestly the "junk" tickles my brain more that the "rare" stuff. What did these people eat? What did they value? How did they live? What did they think was beautiful? What did they keep in their homes for everyday use? Archaeologists call that "material culture" and it's my favorite part of history. Yo this is epic to see I can't wait to find one when I just walking around
It's probably not big enough to have been an actual city, but I think it might have been some sort of general store, or place where travelers on the road would be able to rest. This makes sense, because the structure where the job blocks were would have probably been where craftsmen made stock for the store, the tower could have been an inn, and, going off of what another comment on this video said about armor trims reperesenting professions, then it would make sense that, if it is a general store or inn, all types of people would be there.
what would be REALLY cool, is if there were some kind of villager workstations that you could only find in this structure (maybe in the purple room) for some new villager variants
I think ancient cities are a great addition lore-wise, even thinking of how.
It’d be cool if you could find signs with the enchantment table language on it around the structure or something
Anyone else think that the new structure looks like a ruined town street with colourful walls on the houses lining it?
I found at least a couple on the surface in bedrock edition. That is, one was in an exposed cave, the other one in kind of a a ravine.
Less go, my favourite spot to learn about 1.20!!
I would love to see a handful of these structures with the terricatta replaced with their fired vierients - like over thime they faided due to being burried for eons and the fired blocked were what they really looked like when they were lived in so long a go!

I had pretty much this exact same experience and same thoughts yesterday. Excavating surprisingly fun, structures interesting, junk needs bundles, sus blocks breaking by falling one block annoying (I had a sus sand that was floating so broke when the block next to it went). This makes archaeology an actual worthwhile feature and not just meh
In my opinion the color really adds to the story that it was trying to teach. There are dyes and colored glass every where showing that this civilization really did value color in their traditions. I hope this doesn't change.

@@bababab6906 The blocks are not randomly placed. Mud blocks at the bottom suggests a stronger foundation; cobble and stone bricks suggest paths; bricks suggests working with fire in a kiln; glazed terracotta suggests mosaic traditions; the dyes and colored terracota suggests their art and architecture. See how 80% of the materials chosen all come from the same material: clay. This culture has obvious inspiration from meso-amaerican and islamic cultures in terms of art and architecture. All it takes is to be a bit more of a history and archeology nerd to see how the trail ruins are much closer to actual archeological finds than other ruins in minecraft which are more inspired by fantasy and fictional ruins.

It’s not supposed to look like a city. It’s supposed to look like the ruins of a building after time has compressed layers of building materials into a chunk. This is how archeology actually is. You dig through chunks of clay and dirt to find artifacts. In real life Archeologists aren’t raiding caves.

Wattles the efficiency shovel is driving me insane, use a stone one
It would be nice if the cartographer villager gets a new trade with maps to these structures. At least on bedrock they seem to also appear above ground, but in small ravines or exposed caves. Personally I like the colorful buildings ( remains rather), and if you take the time to restore them as best you can by the clues, it starts making more sense. The tower is pretty easy to restore (and IMO looks rather good in restored condition), but the other buildings need some imagination. It looks like the random blocks are parts of roofs and walks that collapsed. I also suspect that entire parts of the buildings have dropped down a block from where they should have been. I love the clues and speculation as to what happened (earthquake, flood, volcano eruption?) that caused the structures to collapse and fill with sand dirt and gravel. The colors gives me sn impression that the civilization was rich and thriving, and the workstations that were also shown in the video tells it was quite advanced. Seems to me it whould have been quite peaceful and based on farming as well, as no weapons or types of armor are found in the loot table. Not sure how the armor troms fit into that line of thought though.

Ceremonial armor. Gotta have that drip for festival days.
A high efficiency shovel should actually be the last thing to bring, because you could accidentally mine some of the "suspicious" soil along with the usual stuff that you're trying to clear away. Any form of mining, or moving the suspicious materials will ruin the suspiciousness.
15:37 Oh no. You said the word. I hear him. He's coming. HELLLLLLLLP! You summoned matpat
It would be cool if the sniffer egg could only be found in these structures, the law could be that the egg was protected or something and is now lost to the ages. Also, it would be could to find some sort of new music disc like the ancient city and if you have both you can combine them to discover the ancient law of the game.
I can confirm I was able to find the Raiser armor trim when I excavated a trail ruin in a survival world I made lol
@wattlesplays, what video editing software do you use? I am starting a Minecraft Let's Play series, and am looking for a good vid editor program. Thanks!!
I want a base from you here in your next world, where you discover, uncover, and rebuild in your style.
My father was an actual archaeologist (God rest his soul) I went on excavation trips with him. It's pretty accurate you'll find a lot of junk. What junk that is depends on the time of the excavation site. Like pottery shards from an ancient rubbish pit or where they discarded their bones after eating. If you're unlucky, their latrine. Or 150 year old buttons, broken bottles and where they tossed their crappy old candlestick. Then 5% of the time you find something REALLY GOOD.
The trail ruins are so interesting! I like to believe that the ruins used to be outposts/rest stops for wandering villagers. The pottery and armor templates make me believe they were some kind of trading posts with artisans, and with the more advanced stuff they had, because it was such high traffic foot areas, a lot of these posts got to be more technologically advanced than villages of the time. Though I have an another theory based on the armor templates. I think the armor templates point to the thought of different clans based on the design patterns of the armor. These patterns told about where someone with that armor was from, or their specialty perhaps? Like how the military has different branches, the armor has different styles to signify the different branch someone specialized in like the wave for ocean, etc. If that’s true then that would mean that the trail ruins might really have been outposts/rest stops, since where they’re located are in far out places that look like they might be where patrols would go. Those are my theories at any rate.
If we run with the idea of trail ruins being ancient villages, I think that putting sus blocks in abandoned villages might not make as much sense. It’s my understanding that abandoned villages were overrun by mobs and no longer have villagers, but the chests make sense because that’s how villagers “store” their items, and if they were killed by mobs they wouldn’t have removed their stuff. Trail ruins (if they are old villages) would not have chest because they either didn’t have the technology, or they have rotted away and turned into dirt, leaving items to be preserved in sand or gravel (and hopefully soon dirt). anyway, that’s my take on it :)

Much time doesn't have to pass to have loot laying around. If you look around in a city, you find a coin and some rubbish.
