Laurel surrenders to the music like no other. Michael is such the complimentary voice....in so many ways. Tears as always.

(Lyrics from the original liner notes of the CD, "Fall Away Blues":) In the evening, I stoke a fire, lit to keep me safe, here in this place, the thought of a border, fortifies some faith, reassures a strength / There, there lies a fence that I have built of stone, though it is strong the wind still sings through the holes / In the morning, I run to grasp at, every golden ray, my frame alone, can't contain the splendor, my lining must be braced, another vessel made / God, God made this child, out of songs and bone, though I am strong the pain still leaks through the holes / These walls, incomplete and tender, braided from my core, keep out that which is heartless and seek to hold what's pure, oh this is the new homeplace

When you compose new fiddle music, do you do it right on the violin, play it on the piano first, or another instrument?

  • @robkunkel8833

A fine question. I’ll bet piano first ... after the mind.

  • @custerranch

I would wager composing directly on the fiddle. The fretless fiddle has the unique ability to slide and bend notes expressively in a way the piano just cannot, with its set tones. I can play both instruments, and they're just so different.

What kind of microphones did you use to make this video?

  • @LaurelPremo

Shoot! I can't remember exactly what mics we used for this video. We often use a Shure KSM32 or KSM44a if we're doing a single mic. We've also used a Neumann TLM 103 in conjunction with the KSM44a (in figure eight) for mid-side recordings if we want more depth. This recording could have been simply recorded with our Zoom H2, too. Sorry I can't remember this session specifically.

I have a Zoom H1 and I've used it for singing and I didn't think it did a very good job for that. I plan to also use it for violin videos but I'm not confident it'll be so great for that either. But I've seen other music performance videos people have done with that mic and they sound better than mine for some reason. I wonder if they're playing around with the settings or something? Do you adjust the settings or levels when you use your Zoom H2?
