The Holland Class ships are what we call Offshore Patrol Vessels, OPV's for short. They are not designed to operate in wartime conditions. Instead, their primary job is to aid humanitarian missions, patrol the north sea and the dutch carribean and protect shipping lanes from pirates. They are currently armed with an OTO Melara 76mm quickfiring cannon, 1 30mm autocannon, 2 times 12,7mm hitrole, 2 times 12,7mm browning machinegun and 4 to 6 times 7,62mm FN Mag. When required, these ships can defend themselves against airborn targets using its own complement of marines armed with stinger platforms, however this is far from ideal. Instead, there is also the possibility to equip the 30mm Merlin with Mistral missiles and there is also room for a Vertical Launch System armed with anti air and anti ship missiles, making them fully equipped warships at low cost. Advanced radar systems required to deal with air targets are already installed.

No, there is no room for VLS systems to make them "fully equipped warships". If there was the navy would not be lobbying at this very moment to trade these ships in for frigates due to the deteriorated security environment.

@@duxd1452 there is enough space and weight reserve to install a VLS on these ships. The only issue is that it hasn't been considered as an option when they were built so it wouldn't be an easy "click and go" kind of installation. It would require some rebuilding. Besides, the navy isn't lobbying to exchange these ships for frigates. That's just something Admiral Kramer said he wouldn't mind doing. Something the admiral wants is not per definition something the navy wants or is trying to do.

wow, really? i think that if we take off all the military equipment and war electronic instrument this ship will not worth more than two or a bit more million dollars, i saw some similar civil ships and that is the price that generally have

Look at its shape. Notice anything? Most of it is in an angle, for stealth purposes. The armament is probably under all the iron plate(missiles and stuff) except for the main gun.

It does not have missiles. I think it is more meant against pirates and drug smugglers

@@WvhKerkhof No it does not have torpedoes. It also lacks a sonar. This ship is strictly for coast guard tasks and only has guns as weapons: a 76mm Super-Rapid, a 30mm Marlin WS and a 12.7mm Hitrole NT RWS, all by OTO Melara, and 6 FN MAG 7.62mm machine guns.

It's not designed to fight any real warships. It's a large ocean going patrol vessel. It's supposed to fight pirates, smugglers, terrorists, etc. Nothing its own size and armament. A vertical launch system can be added if it would be needed in a wartime situation, it does have the radar and such that would be needed.

Super Radar,but to slow no air defense and a cwis a sitting duck! One pirat with a RPG,and it`s over!

It can handle an RPG and probably better than the Dutch frigates due to its more robust, heavier steel hull and armor in important locations. An anti-ship missile or attack by aircraft would be game over though.

Sjiek maar te weinig motorvermogen om een vrachtschip bij te houden, en bewapening is zeer ondermaats ( Hollandse zuinigheid ) schaam me kapot.
