The New Haven Solari Board; still kicking

We are at New Haven Union Station, where we are graced by the still existent Solari Board, which hangs above the escalators down to the tracks. This board was supposed to have been replace back in the Spring, but for some reason, has continued to exist. This board, apparently, is still not long for this world. Enjoy the sounds of the noise it makes as it flips, as well as all the different destinations. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on October 6th, 2011.

I always loved these, because no matter where you were in the station, you’d hear it and know something was changing.

Very true. I can remember these at London Waterloo station many years ago & as a boy I was fascinated by them & how they worked & made that unique noise.

The Solari board was donated to the Danbury Rail Museum. The entire system was replaced with LED panels that can be programmed from a computer terminal. The Solari system had stopped functioning at the stairs to each of the platforms and the main board could not be modified to accommodate new information. The new system is ADA compliant and can display new stations without building new cassettes.

And that's why they're on their way out. With video flatscreens, there's nothing to get stuck and in the event of total failure a replacement is only as far away as the nearest Walmart.

It’s not unnecessary. It’s more energy efficient and easier to read in daylight than modern digital panel.

  • @someguy4915

@@rooneywayen More energy efficient than a modern LED panel? Lmao... These require stepper motors for each individual indicator. They are more energy efficient when they display the same information without changes but when (like on a train station) they constantly need to change what is being displayed they will draw a whole lot more energy than a standard LED display... While these are easier to read in daylight for some, they are impossible to read without light, so at night the added cost of lights also further drags power consumption anyway. Awesome technology, but saying its more efficient is just simply not true.

Split-flap boards (especially old ones) were prone to one letter being 'flapped' to the next one, which is the most likely explanation, or they actually can't spell.
