The New Germans - Featured Documentary

Nearly one million ethnic Arabs fleeing war and violence back home have come to Germany since 2015.
This film follows one of them, newspaper editor and Syrian asylum seeker Ramy Alasheq, as he looks into historical patterns of Arab immigration and how the latest arrivals are being received in their new country.
For Ramy and many others, life has not been the same since young men said to be Arab were accused of robbing and attacking German women on New Year's Eve 2015 in his new hometown, Cologne. It is a city that Ramy has come to love. But while he and fellow immigrants initially received a warm reception, there are now widespread calls to halt the entry of Arab refugees into Germany.
For hundreds of years, Germany has been a magnet for migrants and refugees from all over the world. But its specific focus on encouraging migration from countries in the Middle East like Egypt, Syria, Iraq and to a lesser extent Jordan, Palestine and North Africa, is not often discussed.
Through the human stories of second and third-generation migrants, as well as incoming new refugees, this film paints a picture of how the experience of Arab immigrants in Germany has changed over the decades.
We ask what it means to be a foreigner in Germany, and at the same time come to understand Germany itself and the reasoning behind its immigration policies. We also hear from German analysts and decision-makers about Germany's dependency on migrant communities to re-populate its dwindling towns and keep its economy strong.

That's debatable and I believe, generally null. There are multiple ways of conquering land and populating it with people. By your logic Germany can become completely Arab in ethnicity yet still function as the Germany of 2010. I see your point and it's a fair one to consider but when considering long term sociological implications one must take much more into account.

The first thing is understanding what a refugee status is and what germany traditionally does with it. Namely once the status evaporates most refugees of war countries return or are returned within a decade, not months or weeks but inside 10 years. Maybe more will stay this time because their countries are a mess even if we claim they are normal (which we Germans would still consider a hellhole) but this is not actual immigration or a guest worker program like with EU citizens or like in the 60s. We had the same rightwing BS of arsonists burning down asylum homes with people inside in the 90s- The difference is just how germany reacted this time around.

What I'm curious about: if he's been in Germany for 3 years, why does he still not speak German? In the scene in the mosque he even needed the parallel translation. Why is that? If he considers himself a new German, why doesn't he take some hints from the first generation he interviewed in this movie and starts by learning the language? A big part of the cultural divide (between any two or more cultures) is always the language barrier.

@@Marina-vd5vm He does speak German and is most certainly still learning it. However, as a good journalist, he wants to make sure to understand everything precisely in order to ask further questions or sort out relevant information for his documentary. The documentary showed in different scenes (e.g. at the very end) that he speaks German. Have you ever tried to master a language as an adult, especially a difficult language such as German? It takes time and three years will be enough to live your everyday life in Germany but not to create such a complex and well researched documentary. I, as a German, think it's a shame to insult someone as ignorant and dumb just because he wants to work properly. It's easy to write a comment like yours under this short film but it's mentally challenging for some to empathetically put your mind into his position.

They are not new Germans, they are people who live in Germany and they have foreign ancestry and nationality. It is not so easy to achieve German citizenship, and it will not happen because a person will learn a language. A person must follow German law, rules and respect the culture. When I go to Germany from a neighbouring country and live there that does not mean I am German.

I know many foreigners but they are europiens or at least they respect Europien values. But I also think that multiculturalism which means that different cultures are mixed on one soil is failed. It does not work. It is not a case of colour of skin or nationality, it is a case of values and a question do people love new country and will follow social rules of that country.

Europe is multiethnic and some countries are too but that is a result of wars, rape, and migration INSIDE Europe. These “multi-ethnic” countries are also a result of government decisions. Doesn’t make it true. We were never asked. And then these treacherous governments used these realizations to bolster and justify immigration. Nationals of Europe are SUPPOSED to be white you silly idiot. Your political correct obsessiveness and “tolerance” hinders you from being conscious of what’s going on. You’re stupid.

The main problem is that in Germany refugees are commonly concentrated in the poorer areas of the towns where people are frustrated with their economic and social situations anyway. When a few years ago the administration of Hamburg tried to build a refugee home in a noble quarter of the town the inhabitants of that area filed a suit and tried to prevent this from happening. Their argument was that if this refugee home were to be built in their neighborhood the prices of their real estate would drop dramatically. The court saw it their way and the construction of the refugee home never happened. This may demonstrate another facet of the situation in Germany not discussed in the documentary (the easier process of integration only touched upon by the example of the woman who now lives in a more rural area of Germany, she too wanted to move away from the multiethnic neighborhood she was forced into when she came to Germany and Cologne). The more educated people in Germany like to frown upon and sneer at the lower classes and more conservative citizens who engage in the activities of Pegida or who complain about the situation in their neighborhoods. This includes academics and politicians. I hypothesize that many of them - especially the Green party - live in a kind of ivory tower: They are more likely to originate from more educated, well-to-do families and therefore received better conditions of upbringing, had usually a higher standard of living in a middle to upper-class environment, etc. In the case of students, academics and the like they usually only encounter the "other" on campus or at their workplace, where the immigrants and their offspring are already well integrated and assimilated. They have already shown that they embrace the value system of western society by performing well at school and trying to advance in a society that values achievement and engagement. Also, a Green politician is not likely to buy their grocery at a common discount store but rather from a farmer or in a wholefood shop. They live in the good areas and work at parliament. Those people will never understand the problems of the poor and the workers in the run-down areas. They leave those people alone. It this this feeling of detachment that the Germans notice when they hear those people talking on these matters. They seem to have no idea.

I do not care about the origin of immigrants who have made it to Germany. What is most important is how they behave in our country, it is all about mutual respect! Therefore, they are welcome, no matter if the God they preach to is called Allah or Jesus Christ! Currently, there is a shortage of workers in some parts of the economy, so we have to make the best out of this everlasting phenomenon called immigration. What is more: the incidents of New Year 2015 were the result of failures on the part of the local police, and the perpetratures were NOT immigrants from Syria, but mostly Moroccans.

Her attitude made sense to me. She wanted to be surrounded by Germans to give her daughter a chance to learn German and to better integrate into German society. She seemed well educated, probably capable along with her husband of making a living without state help and thus contibuting to German society in a positive way. However, the 'foreigners' she moved away from in Cologne may well take a different path.

I wish she had fully explained why they did give their children Arab first names. My guess - It was more important for HIM to assert his will and dominance than to help their kids be accepted into society. It isn't good enough that they already had an Arab last name, he couldn't even compromise because of his arrogance. If my assumptions are wrong, I'd like to hear another explanation.

LoL i was a migrant all my life in Europe, and i never felt welcome, but that is because the people here are more closed, and friends are not seen as family. This is not bad, but it means that to feel at home, you must make your self a home, as i understood that my situation changed, and i never felt better since :) Take care everyone.

when you are in your own country. its ok to feel entitled, but when you are an auslandischer, atleast learn to know the rules, language and integrate to the country. give respect. its sad to know whats currently happening to germany. theres nothing wrong about practicing your religion, just dont push it too far. ive seen documentaries that muslim threatens jews and other religion. remember no one is above the law. and the old immigrants who have been intergrated and was able to be successful in Germany are now affected because of what the some of the refugees are doing. so sad

The only chance Germans have to preserve their cultural roots is by leaving the multicultural type cities and move to other less mixed cities where it would be more difficult for non germans to move to. Take power there and further solidify German dominance in those cities. Vote with your money.

Isn't Al Jazeera stemming from Qatar? Why did germany have to do more for syrian refugees than Qatar? This is pure disgusting Propaganda. "New Germans". Everyone would agree with the opposite: A german can not be an arab just because he feels like it. A german is someone who comes from german ancestry. Also, how many muslim countries are there the Arabs could go to? Close to 60? Not only in the arab world. Whole asian world. There's dozens of culturally similar countries. Why do they come especially to germany? Because they love german culture and tradition so much? Good joke, even further to say, many times they even share an utter disgust for european culture and tradition. The arabs that come to europe nowadays come all the long way from the asian/arab/islamic world and through all of europe, because for economic reasons, nothing else.
