I've been waiting for the Ode Gen 2 Grinder. Kyle's review is comprehensive and covers all the bases. Based on the redesigned hopper, the anti-static technology and the Gen 2 burr taste profile, I pulled the trigger on one of these today,. Can't wait for it to arrive and thanks again Kyle!

It’s tough! But I’d rather prove to my community that I’m here for the right reasons and my word can be trusted.
i have had the ode (1.1 burrs) since last year and didn’t know they dropped the new one! the static is definitely annoying, but as i’ve broken it in i’ve noticed i don’t need to grind as fine to bring out flavor and clarity, so i’ve been happy with it. i’ll def consider buying the new burrs thanks to you
Thanks for the review. I’ve been using a Rancilio Rocky for over a decade, with three burr replacements along the way. Every few months a new grinder intrigues me, but never enough to pull the trigger. Maybe one day, but not today.

@@KyleRowsell anytime Kyle - your reviews help me tremendously and I know I can rely on them, so I want to do my part in letting you know how amazing they are so you can keep on keeping on 😊 Also - you misunderstood or I wasn’t clear enough haha. What I meant to say was the amazing production quality and style, is standard for YOUR videos. It’s not a standard for coffee content in general. In fact, there are many coffee KZreadrs who have great information and I watch them, but the production quality is nowhere near your level. James Hoffman is probably the only other guy that compares in terms of production quality and that’s saying something. Wanted to clarify that because you are indeed way above the general “standard” in my honest opinion:)
as a gen 1 ssp burr user, I love my ode. The grounds are incredibly consistent, the grinder looks chique, and while it is a bit messy, its not really a big deal. My dad has recently gotten into coffee and I am really looking forward to getting him an ode 2 for his birthday.
I’ve been holding off on upgrading from my Capresso grinder and this looks like a winner for pour over and drip!

After watching your review i decided to purchase the ode gen1 I already had the odegen2 and had updated the burrs to mp ssp. So i had and extra set of 64 mm burrs. The ode gen 1 went on sale from fellow for $199. Perfect. I now have both grinders side by side and am enjoying both burr sets. 64 gen2 burrs are great and also the mp ssp produce great coffee v60 and stagg x.
Thanks for the concise comparisons and highlights - deciding between a cheaper flat grinder and slapping in gevi burrs or going for gen 2 Ode and being happy with the aesthetic

Gen 2 sounds absolutely fantastic!! I wonder how it performs head-to-head with high-end grinders mainly for filter coffee? It would be exciting to give that a test!
@Raditram

The gen 1 with ssp mp burr is actually one of the best value for money filter grinder. With the minor addition on the 2.0, it's basically punching above its weight imo.
Received my Gen 2 Ode last week.. Love it...yet a few times the motor just stopped (not the sensor shut off way) with beans still in chamber and hopper. Maybe just a break-in period. Grind is consistent.
I’m thinking about purchasing the Ode.
Thx!
Lagom Mini w/moonshine burrs or this Gen 2 ODE. Mainly for filtered coffee . I’m currently coming from a OXO Conical smart scale that I’ve had for years .
Just got mine today. After doing some research I decided that this would be a good fit for me. Price dropped to $276 US so I pulled the trigger. Looking forward to doing a side by side with my $50 Amazon that I’ve been happy with so far.
Awesome updates. Now if only they included an option for upgrading to a motor that could handle espresso...
Bought the Ode+SSP MP 4 months ago. Despite minor problems, it’s still my favorite grinder for filter. Really have buyer’s remorse here 😅
I really appreciate your reviews. You're always positive, even in your criticism. It's very CONstructive, rather than Destructive. I am wondering what kettle you are using in most of your videos? It's not a Stagg. You put some cool googly eyes on it haha.

KitchenAid KCG8433 is using the same antistatic technology. It is so simple and clever, I don't know why other coffee grinders brands like Breville, which claim to be smart, are not using it.
Nice review as always! Sounds like Fellow really listened to the customer feedback with the gen 2 updates. My YT app (Android) appears to be unchanged.
Most companies would've just done the burr upgrade. Love the fact that Fellow went beyond and actually did something (with the static) to make the v2 worth considering even over the v1. Real nice!

Great review Kyle. Ownership of Gen1 was short - grinds went everywhere. Welcome tweaks here that seem to work. Counter friendly, attractive and easy workflow. Curious: have you tried the Gorilla Gear 64mm Black Flat Burrs?
I think I speak for more people when I ask: will you do a comparison video between the Ode gen 2 vs the Lagom mini? Thanks btw, great video! nice to watch, informative, and honest!

Yes very much! I was going to pull the trigger on the Lagom Mini, now this thing comes out and it's research mode all over again
I really wish there was some sort of trade in program, because I would love the improved chute and the improved retention and cleanliness, but since I have the original Ode with the Gen 2 burrs already, it's a bit too much for me to make the jump, especially since I just got the new kettle last month... That said, I am glad they Fellow continues to improve on their products!

Really great review and appreciate the honesty! I went with a Barraza Encore over the Ode a year ago - at the end of the day it was down to price and availability. After seeing this, though, I'm mighty tempted to switch. Already having issues with the encore as the housing for the burr is plastic and a tab has broken causing grind consistency issues.
@Aerowind
Жыл бұрын
Probably a good idea that you waited. I got the kickstarter one and the static is a huge problem. RDT is required or you're making a mess for both the machine and the dosing cup, which is fine if you're the only one using the grinder, but once family gets involved it becomes a big mess.
@apeschell
Жыл бұрын
Happened to me to, but pay $4 for a new plastic burr housing and you should be back to new. Cheap and easy fix instead of paying hundreds for a new one. I like the fixability of the baratza grinders!
@nolanmcintyre14
Жыл бұрын
@@apeschell true!! I just wish they gave us the ability to pay more for a bit more quality. Honestly, I'd probably pay 20 or 30 for a full-metal option that I know won't break again. But fair point! They have a great parts selection for really good prices
@apeschell
Жыл бұрын
@@nolanmcintyre14 True - probably would wear down the burrs to have a metal one. But if you order 2 or 3 for $8 or $12 then you should be set for a couple years! I bought 2 and have yet to use the second one.
I was probably going to get the Ode Grinder anyways very soon to start grinding beans at home finally, so it’s a pleasant surprise the Gen 2 came out right now. The static cling thing is excellent (to me; anything that cuts down on time not actually cooking or brewing in the kitchen - i.e. cleaning - is hugely valuable). The only hard choice is the color: white or black 😅
Thank you for this great review Kyle! Super helpful as I’m looking to purchase a filter grinder! Still trying to decide what to purchase and now you made it even harder…do I get gen1 and upgrade the burs? Or do I jump into gen2!! 🤯 As always, thank you for the honesty and transparency!!
@KyleRowsell

Mat, my pleasure! Both are great and if you can find a gen 1 at a good price I'd say consider it. But the Gen 2 is rad. after about 5 lbs of coffee seasoning the burrs are great.

Nice one 😉
Agreed, just add the new burrs!
I wonder if the Gen 2 hopper will fit on gen1 grinders, and when it will be available as a part. Would definitely like that steeper feed ramp on my SSP gen 1. Edit: I reached out to Fellow support to ask if this was going to be possible - they responded that it would not fit... I question the response, but who knows for sure. "Unfortunately, the parts of the Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 and the original Ode Brew Grinder are not compatible and would not fit."
this video sold me
Thanks for review, Kyle. Curious, does anyone else have to take their grind coarser (with gen 1) than Fellow's recommended settings?
I hope the new hopper can be fitted onto the old Ode. While it is a minor complaint, i do find the sticking beans especially after RDT to be kind of annoying. it can be helped by pouring beans in the front of the hopper where the slope is steeper but overall it's an annoying design oversight. The anti static feature is really nice but it's hard for me to justify upgrading for just that since I would just stick my SSP burrs into the Gen 2. I did notice that you can order the Gen 2 with SSP burrs for $150 extra which is a nice discount on the SSP burrs.
Love my SSP
Thanks for the video, lovely polished production. I'd be grateful for your thoughts on this unit vs. the lagom mini (i.e. any update to your gen 1 vs lagom mini video)? My use case is for an all round grinder with a focus on v60 and preference for sweet, juicy coffee. Thanks v much Regards J
Kalita Next G also uses ion thingy.
Thanks for your frankness… I’ll stick with my Sette 30 and C40. Great review …

Appreciate that. Thanks for watching Fred!
Can you do a review of the new burr set vs SSP upgrade on the gen 1 next? Thanks in advance!
There is no mess with light/medium roasted coffees. But with dark roasted beans (e.g. Peets) it is messy... RDT still needed for that case.
I appreciate how you described the differences between v2 burrs and SSP MP, different styles both just as “good” depending on your tastes. Do you think both v2 burrs and SSP MP burrs grind just as fine?
@KyleRowsell
Жыл бұрын
About the same yes
I wanted the upgrade to involve espresso. Wasn’t that the main issue for a lot of people? Guess not. Back to saving for the niche.
I love my gen 1.1 ode. If you have a small brush it’s nothing to coax the last two or three beans into the grinder. The same brush can be used to brush away the minimal static grains. I have the gen 2 burrs to install one day. How many grinds can I expect out of my version 1.1 burrs? Love My Ode ❤
Like many version 2 products it’s the product it should have been to begin with, and it doesn’t seemed to have fixed the issues I have (the thread pitch needs changing, really). Having said that, the Ode with SSP gets used a lot at my home, and I likely wouldn’t have bothered with the SSP if these burrs had come stock with mine.
Good morning Kyle. Would you happen to know if the new 2.0 burrs fit into the original Ode? If so, are they available for purchase? Thanks so much for your time. I love your content. Your videos are terrific! Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy new year!

@@KyleRowsell Thanks for getting back to me. Take care.
I had to return this so to how much retention mine had I would lose so much! It was annoying to even grind with.
Thanks Kyle! May I ask what's the difference in flavor profile comparing with the ssp cast burr and the vario steel burr?
Great review as always, clear and concise while still covering all the important tidbits. I do have a question though, I pulled the trigger on the SSP burrs for my V1 Ode a while ago, and ever since switching over I have noticed a significant increase in the amount of fines produced with those vs. the gen 1 Ode burrs, to the point that I have issues with it clogging my pour-over filters. I see other people mentioning how they now get FEWER fines in comparison with the SSPs and I don't know what to make of this discrepancy. Can you think of anything that might be causing this? I've put about 10kg of beans through the SSP burrs, but I really haven't seen much of an improvement in the production of fines. Do I just need to season more still? Thanks for any input!

Can you do a review on the KitchenAid - Burr Coffee Grinder. Not a coffee purist, but It has been an amazing grinder for the price for both my V60 and Gaggia. Would love to see it put up against grinders twice/three times the price.
Kyle, if you were to match the exact same grind between the gen 1 and gen 2 burrs, which do you like better? I’m not the biggest acidity fan, but love clarity
Hey Kyle, does it look like you'd be able to install the Gen 2 hopper on the original Ode? I have some issues with beans not sliding down into the grinder and if I could buy just the hopper part to upgrade my gen 1, that would be nice
Whats your overall favorite burr set/grinder now a days for drip/pourover?
Now to figure out how to retrofit a ionizer onto my DF64...
As an Ode+SSP owner I don't see a reason to upgrade but I wonder if the hipper can be swapped. Not having to RDT is very nice but not worth buying a new grinder. If they would have upgraded the motor and had range for Espresso to Filter Coffee and removed the indent settings (Say a range of 1-15) where 15 is the course end of the SSP and it took it to Espresso fine.... Then I would be a player even at $50-100 more because I love the look of the Ode. All that said, it's a great grinder.
Definitely not upgrading to this but I may do the SSPs. My ex-GF has been using hers for espresso for 2 years and a good 5 shots a day. I was holding out to see if it held up but it still works like new.

@@jaked.757 Oh yeah up to 30 give or take before the hopper and or grind cup fills up. And the duty cycle is 90 secs with 90 second break so yeah, big doses or a bunch of shots in a row are the only limits and that second issue isn't even real bc normal workflow between shots is that long or more anyway
Hi Kyle, thanks for the great review. I was going to buy the Ode when it came out but did not because of the issue with finer grinds … in addition to pour overs I have an old Bialetti which I also use consistently. So I bought a used Rancilio Rocky which has served me well … also in case I decided to buy an espresso machine. Now I doubt I will buy an espresso machine, and am a little tired of the need to hold the on button on the Rocky, as well as its’ size … So do you think the Ode is now a solid option, or do you have any other recommendations. Also looked at Ode and Rocky because of relative low noise … (budget is also issue) Thanks! Phil in NJ
Which is the best bang for buck grinder that can do both pour over and espresso?
Just wondering, how do different kind of burrs affect acidity? Isn't that just the grind size that affects most of the output besides quality of the beans and water temperature?
Did you align the burrs in your 2.0 Ode or is there no need for that as the tolerances in the 2.0 Ode are now tighter?
Just ordered one, tired of my morning deathgrip on my varia hand grinder
