Hence why piracy will never go away. Piracy is where you go when you can't actually purchase a game. Wolfenstein (2009), Heretic II, Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition, American McGee's Alice, etc.. Even Deadpool (2013) can't be purchased digitally anymore. PC players have been dealing with this for a long time.

@@iamnid Being $5 isn't an excuse for failing to properly port a 25+ year old game to modern hardware. Especially when amateur homebrew ports far outshine the official version. It's especially disappointing because not only is everything but the resolution worse than the original version, the Steam version of Doom 3 BFG Edition includes Doom 1 & 2 and costs $20, the same total cost of buying all three on console, but lacks ANY of the issues the new ports have. Looks great, sounds great, plays great, and no Bethesda login. If they could get it right years ago, why have they managed to screw it up now? And why do they expect people to pay again for an inferior version? It's just sad, really.

Doom 3 wqs based off it's BFG Edition anyway, so Bethesda wanted Nerve to do Doom 1 and 2

I never thought I'd hear that Doom 3 runs great on a handheld, but 1 & 2 have problems.

It runs reasonably well most of the time (Doom 3 that is), but you can round a corner into a more geometrically complex area, or look down a long hallway into a room and the framerate really drops (from 60 to 30 or lower depending on where you're looking, which can be pretty jarring) - it's never unplayable mind you, but it's somewhat unstable. At least they patched Doom 1 and 2 and gave them 60 FPS support etc. - the Doom 3 port could use a bit more optimization though.

Man, such complete 180 in port quality. Panic Button should've gotten the chance to make all of them. Dudes are technical wizards.

It's not hard at all! Modern Vintage Gamer ported Chocolate Doom to Switch in 45 minutes. He made a video about it and everything! I guarantee his port has more features than the official offering. There's no excuse for such a garbage port.

6:15 notice how the ledge beneath you appears to warp as you pass over it. This is called wall wiggle and it has been a well known problem for years that community source ports have fixed.

Linguica as usual it’s the fans that are the true game testers. It’s sad that we have to fix the games we love due to a lack of possible effort, time, money, from the devs.

As someone who played Doom 3 on release, the fact you can now play in it 720p at 60fps on a handheld is just wild to me!

doom 64 is th best version of doom and its console release ,altho doom EX on Pc is a direct emulation of that

The original Doom source code couples the lighting on flats (floors and ceilings) with the screen resolution. Every source port that implemented higher resolutions had to fix this or else the lighting looks weird. I am 99% sure that these classic Doom ports didn't re-fix this ancient bug.

You should mention that the original Doom 3 BFG edition for PC/360/PS3 included Ultimate Doom and Doom II, better versions without DRM even. Thanks a lot, Bethesda!

That's actually not true. I have the have the BFG Edition on PC and it's just as bad. The only thing that's better is the speed of the music but the variable sound effect pitch problem is still very much present and the music instruments sound terrible. The OG Xbox version that comes with the Doom 3 expansion is the best console port of vanilla Doom 1 and 2 even though it still suffers quite a bit with the sound effects variable pitch and the music is still slow but the instruments are much better. There's yet to be a perfect port of vanilla Doom to a console. It's really sad that all of the unofficial ports on PC have been doing it right for well over a decade.

Up until the Xbox 360 conversions of Doom. Almost every port wasn’t an exact replica of the PC version. Bethesda is so dog shit, they brought back the unfaithful port. What a meme.

I got it at launch on PC and it was 🤯 at the time, best version though I played a couple of years ago now was the BFG on PC with the VR mod, if you ever get the chance that's the way, inside the horror is another level.

I remember Doom 3 absolutely crushing my laptop when I got it back in the day. The fact I can play it near flawlessly on the Switch portably is mind blowing to me.

So in short Doom 1 + 2 are making the demons look too Dummy Thicc and the sleep mode on my switch is clapping me so loudly its alerting the drm.

Ahh colonel i'm triying to play some doom but the clap of my sleep mode switch keeps alerting the drm.

Also there are two bugs not mentioned here: Incorrect texture masking at line defs (see e1m3 corridor ceiling with sky), and incorrect sprite occlusion behind floors or ceilings in certain places (most noticeable when enemies are at the top of stairs).

I was expecting Doom 3 just to be a simple 1080p upscale from the BFG edition I wasn’t expecting it to be a native 4K60fps release on X and Pro. Will be picking it up now. Also please do a retro on Doom 3 it deserves it’s time in the spotlight.

2019 - Still having issues porting a game from 1993. I don't even think bethesda knows how the BFG works either.

I consider the muzzle flash lighting the darkness not only a graphical effect, but a mechanic. I'm surprised more focus isn't put on this when comparing the classic and BFG versions of Doom 3.

Looks like the default level of quality for Bethesda

A DF Retro episode on DOOM 3 is definitely something I would like to see.

So, Panic Button did an amazing job yet again _Stare at Nerve Software_

Literally 2 days before they released this set, I was inspired to set out on a mission to find my long lost Doom 3 disc 1, which I had lost for over a decade. I found it inside an IDE CD-ROM drive I had put it storage and was so happy I could play it again...I was thinking I was the only person in the world thinking of playing the game, then a few days later this set hits and people are talking about Doom 3 again, awesome

At this point, I won't accept anything less than the best/definitive version of the original DOOM. Such a massive bummer.

So... Doom 1 and Doom 2, which are some of the easiest games to port over in existence, have numerous problems running on the newer systems that didn’t exist in the Xbox Live/Source Ports, but Doom 3 which is significantly harder to port over, runs almost flawlessly and is in many ways an improvement over previous ports. Thanks Todd.

I disagree that it runs "almost flawlessly", having played the game for much longer on the switch. It has some really heavy drops to the 40s in many big open areas, and it's pretty annoying in those parts. A sudden sluggishness has cost me many deaths. I've seen single digit frames in an a specific direction in a specific location, which just seems like oversight because that should be impossible for a game this old with hardware this recent. I've played for 5 hours and 33 minutes on my switch till now.

I never understand how publishers can be okay releasing bad ports of their older games :/ but also how do you mess up a Doom port? DF RETRO DOOM 3 PLS

PLEASE do another video on these ports! A much needed patch is finally here and helps with ALOT of the issues. No more awful stretched image just to name one of them

At the moment there are no comparison video's of Doom 3 on PC and the original Xbox anywhere on KZread, no one on KZread has made such a video. It would make for a very interesting video because the developers of the original Xbox version of Doom 3 used some clever tricks to bring the game to less capable console hardware.

Using the DUSK soundtrack as background music? 10/10 video.

With the latest patch (as of 2024.08) this console version is P E R F E C T. Have full co-op and versus online multiplayer support , all mods and maps, etc. 4K 120 fps on PS5 & XBOX X.

The slow music drove me nuts in the Xbla version.

Valve have still not given me a reason to distrust them, I've had Steam from Beta and over the years many games I bought have left the store but i can still download and play them, I just increase HD size too over the years, sat at 32TB and just keep all my games installed so they will always be there in 0 and 1's.

Ignorant. Services like GOG show all-digital works perfectly fine. It's the fact people like you totally miss the problem that allows them to get away with these issues. Bear in mind that whether it's on a CD, cartridge, or your hard drive, it's all the same code. DRM is still found on discs.

@@wing0zero Ever heard about torrents? all the games, online, not demanding any online connection. Even if you have all your steam games saved somewhere, you will not be able to launch them leagally without steam.

I like the idea of a Doom 3 DF Retro, but since you've already done analysis on the BFG editions, what about an idTech 4 episode looking at Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey? EDIT: And Wolfenstein '09! (Do we care about Brink? :P)

The original Doom is also playable on the Samsung Smart Fridge, an ATM machine, a Leap Frog children’s toy computer, a calculator, and even a printer. The last one runs it poorly though. It would be crazy to see a Digital Foundry breakdown of the unofficial Internet of Things Doom ports.

Changing sample rates also changes the pitch of the music. That'd mean that they played back the midi at the right speed but at a higher pitch and corrected this by increasing sample rate. An odd problem because why would a midi file play back at a higher pitch? You'd have to load it into a DAW! SFX are really muffled too and the login stuff (and problem with waking from sleep) kinda sour my first playthrough of Doom :( . It's neat to finally see Doom 2016s roots though! That's one of my favourite games on Switch.

I definitely want a Doom 3 DF Retro. I had Doom 3 on PC with an Athlon XP and a 9800 pro, and the Xbox version and loved them all.

He did show it at 12:49, but since it was a locked 1080p 60 it probably wasn't worth discussing in detail.

I’d love a DOOM 3 DF Retro - what I’d also love is a DF Retro (maybe the same one) that also discusses Deus Ex Invisible War. I says this because it released the year before and actually had more rudimentary forms of many of the new techniques that Doom 3 made so big. It’s a divisive game too, but I think an analysis of it could go well with a broader analysis of all the new GeForce 3-enabled bells and whistles.

ahhh Doom 3, one of my most favorite games! I was lucky enough to play the original version where you had to switch between Flashlight and gun. some didn't like it but it definitely added more suspense and difficulty imo.

Sure I'm a PC player, but I would love to get some more options in games, especially for the Switch, being able to choose resolution, framerate, and certain quality settigns. I mean 540p30fps for Doom3 isn't bad if it would allow for greatly improved battery life. In docked mode I would love to lower it to 900p or 720p for better performance, especially since the game uses very clean textured geometry. The aliasing and shimmering is kept to a minimum even at lower resolutions.

@@Bitches4Day Good point. I have a particular liking for survival horror, and although Doom 3 is not technically a survival horror game, it has many of the traits that are associated with the genre. This is why I think I loved it so much. As you say, it was so innovative for the time and graphically mind blowing when played on a powerful PC. DOOM 3, Fry Cry and Half-life 2 were three great FPS which took up a lot of my time back in 2004.

So, they updated the ports of doom 1 & 2 and I think it’s worth another look, especially with the 60fps and visual enhancements.

They can play Doom on a Fridge but they can’t get it working properly on a flippin Switch??? See what I did there

@@ubersoldier71 The same 60 fps but the resolution is higher on Xbox One X. So the picture is cleaner. It holds up surprisingly well to this day.

They've updated Doom 1&2! I've only played a couple minutes so far but I can definitely say that the music is better! Would love to see a future update video on it! Edit: Played a bit more and I can say that the lighting is improved. Still, they need to add multible aspect ratios and border selection. If they do then this will be a good version of Doom 1&2.

Doom 3 and Ninja Gaiden on Xbox were incredible back then for me. I was legit blown away by them.

You didn't have to use Aubrey Hodges' Playstation Doom soundtrack, but you did, and that's why you're awesome John.

Tip my hat in for a Doom 3 DF Retro. Loved Doom 3 on the Xbox. Played a ton of the co-op.

Not even the correct aspect ratio in 2019. Did anyone porting this play doom? The 360 port 11 years ago has more features with achievements and online play too.

Yeah. Even the ps3 ver DooM Classic Complete was better. MINUS the lower resolution. Plus it was ONLY $15 for doom1,2,doom2 master levels AND final doom

Bought that port years ago and it's awful the music and sound is a glitchy mess.

I'm not too concerned with the performance of Doom 3 on Switch. It looks to hold 60fps and playable framerates often enough for me to consider it a solid conversion, and even taking into account the performance drops, Panic Button has very consistently supported their Switch ports long-term with various iterative patches that smooth out various performance hiccups. Rocket League used to run at lower resolutions and exhibit framerate drops, but it runs a locked 60fps now and averages higher framerates. DOOM 2016 and especially Wolfenstein: The New Order had their dynamic resolution and performance adjusted significantly over time and both games are much more solid on the platform now. Panic Button is more than likely going to give Doom 3 the same treatment and patch up performance more and more as time goes on. If you're skeptical of the Switch version currently (I'm not, personally), I'd say give it a few months and see how things change when Panic Button starts releasing patches.

It's definitely a decent conversion, but the framerate dropping drastically in certain rooms/down long hallsways etc. is definitely jarring. It never enters unplayable territory, but it seems like it should be hitting a locked 60 more often.

I know this video is old but you nailed it... seeing it run like that on the switch is just something else for anyone that lived through it.

Because GZDoom isn't owned by Bethesda nor id Software? I mean Christoph Oelckers would definitely give the code for GZDoom for an official console port but Bethesda is Bethesda, there is still homebrew but there are just as many downsides as there are benefits, but now since release the ports are fine and definitely viable but if you have even a potato PC GZDoom will run perfectly even with overhaul mods

The music has another issue, if you listen to E1M2, the samples for the bass sustain too long and notes blend together. I don't think the music is recorded, but is in fact being played back with a poorly made soundfont.

The only bad news is they have yet to port DOOM 64!!! SERIOUSLY BETHESDA/ID SOFTWARE, I'M BEGGING YOU, BRING DOOM 64 TO THE PS4!!!

16:00 My thoughts exactly. Doom3 will always have that vibe of being way ahead of it's time... At the time I downloaded the demo and it was unplayable even at low settings, while Half-Life 2 was fine... My PC at the time wasn't high end by any means, but I was able to play the GTAs of the era, HL2, Mafia etc with no issues... Wasn't until 2006, that I was finally able to play Doom 3... and I was disappointed lol... did not live up to my expectations.

CRTs don't really have a resolution, which is why games looker great no matter if you played at 640x480 or 1600x1200. The only thing they had was a mesh for color separation, but luminance res doesn't exist.

Because source ports don’t exist for consoles. Did you think for even half a second before typing this?

I found couple of graphical glitches in Doom II. In "Barrels of Fun", there is a place, where staircase glitches into the floor. The same problem appears in "The Abbyss" (that level with narrow walkways), where again, floor glitches with the walls.

Doom 3 DF Retro episode? Is that even a question? YES PLEASE!

My biggest gripe with the Switch versions of all three games is the lack of gyro aiming. I'm so used to motion controls on Doom 2016, Wolfenstein and a few other shooters on there, I keep trying to motion-aim at the zombies in Doom 3 right before they bite my face off.

"Disconnected from Bethesda *.* net. Network features will be unavailable." There's no online multiplayer, so what the hell do they mean by network features?

A DF Retro of Doom 3 definitely sounds good. Speaking of Doom 3 and the BFG version, I hope one day we get to see an episode on creative's EAX (and maybe A3D?) in older titles (which is one of the major differences for me between BFG and original versions of Doom 3).

I'd love to see a DF Retro on Doom 3.
