The New (and bigger) Ridgemonkey XXL

#camping #campervanlife #ridgemonkey
The popular Ridgemonkey Compact XL has been a phenomenal success with campervanners, but some folk feel it's a tad on the small side. Now meet the brand new Ridgemonkey Compact XXL, a much bigger version of the much loved cookset, and one that is destined to be a classic. #camping

I was inspired to climb and hike in the hills by you more years ago than probably either of us would care to remember! So it was a delight to find you still inspiring outdoor adventures albeit at a slightly slower pace. I too have invested in a camper van, my MTB is still powered only by my old legs though but I can envisage an e-bike in the not too distant future. I’m very tempted by the XXL Ridgemonkey having enjoyed using the standard size for several years, what puts me off is that it might encourage me to indulge in one of my other favourite hobbies which is over eating!

I think you’re meant to close it while cooking as the heat will transfer to the top pan too and speed up the cooking time. It will also be more stable. And you cook easily flip it over to allow the sausages to cook on all sides.

Surely the whole point is to close it. Otherwise it’s just a frying pan with an awkward lid? Whoops crash 💥

You're absolutely correct but the beauty of the Ridgemonkey is that you can use it in some many different ways. I'd never close it up if I was cooking a steak for example. You'd end up with a broiled steak rather than a fried one. However, I feel that if the pans are designed to be opened up then they should stay open until you close them. You shouldn't have to hold it open.

@@CameronMcNeishOutdoors You’re right in some cases you want it open. In that case you can disconnect the two parts and use just the pan you need, either the grill pan or the normal pan. I’ve seen people use them as two individual pans on two hobs too.

New Ridge Monkey is great veggies are so good for you. Take a very large potato , carrot , parsnip , broccoli florets , onion , capsicum anything you fancy. Do the potato , carrot, parsnip first cut up small and even soak in water do your other veggies same small size , mix together and 4 tablespoons oil , a sprinkling of old bay , Italian seasoning, salt and pepper the dry and fry with a little oil and garlic. Pull the lid down and you have roasted veggies.

  • @stevezodiac491

You can save money by buying a similar thing on Amazon, the SQ Professional at £29.95, similar capacity but wider instead of deeper, giving it the ability to straddle both burners better This pan is as good quality as the ridge monkey( i have had mine in use for a year now with no sign of wear ), same clam design, Teflon lined with edge seals also with detachable handles and it saves you £26.

I bought an SQ one, but couldn’t see one that the handles removed. I ended up giving it away because it was simply too big for my camper van as the handles don’t remove. I have a couple of RMonkey ones, including this, and it works much better for me than the SQ version, excellent though that was at cooking.

Looks nice but that hinge should be changed so the top can be hinged right back and flat. Opening only to 90 degrees is an accident waiting to happen especially with hot fat involved! Not for me I'm afraid, I get equally good results from a good frying pan at a fraction of the price.

That lid is dangerous so it's either a very bad design or not intended to be open but even just checking food could be a finger trap especially as its not very often you get a completely flat surface. Needs a redesign at that price. Not for me. There are better ones on the market.
