The New 12th Gen Intel Celeron G6900 - Definitely Not an i9 Killer...

The new Alder Lake Intel Celeron G6900 has been in the headlines recently for it's apparent Core I9 equivalent single-thread performance. After paying just £55 for this new chip and a further £80 for a Socket 1700 motherboard, I decided to see how good it really is.
This is my 12th Generation Celeron review.

    You also forgot to mention that 610 motherboards only support 1 memory channel. Therefore some of the stutters are not inherently CPUs fault. Withcher 3 is for sure able to run fluently at 2 core CPU. Same can be said about CS:GO. I've played them without any hiccups on 2c/2t cpu before.

    @Monochromatik The very first Celerons were pretty good. While the cache-less versions did struggle in office applications, they were a decent value for gaming. The 'A' version that followed ended up being arguably the best processor on the market for a bit of time when overclocked. Intel really wanted to crush AMD's K6 so they went a little overboard with the value proposition. Soon after that it started dropping in value precipitously and has long been the "Is this good enough for grandma's PC?" processor as we know it today.

  • @ayuchanayuko

    @ayuchanayuko

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@KiraSlith Sure I run Linux too, but Linux right now is also getting way more bloated unless you run some lean distro (e.g. Mint) with XFCE. Even Zorin with XFCE is slow. Don't even get started with Elementary. When you do get faster performance with WINE, good luck with compatibility and hardware acceleration, not to mention the multitude of WINE configurations you have to keep. I have Vanilla Win10 in all our PCs. Heck, its even running smoothly in a 2GB Atom tablet with 32GB emmc (32bit Win10). I could even play Killing Floor 1! I also have it running well enough in a Atom-based Celeron laptop with 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD. Sure they both slug up if I enable my Oracle DB2 server but thats not their workload. Both of them I could do light Photoshop comfortably for web design or photo retouches. A fresh install shouldn't slug the system up, else something else is wrong, like a dying HDD or an overheating CPU. Had the same experience with an MSI laptop (E350, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD). Win10 kept hanging but continued, Mint was faster and responsive but things eventually just stops loading. Apparently the HDD was dying. Same banana with a Core Solo laptop. Same banana too with a colleague's old Atom laptop. My experience with all our 4GB Core 2-era PCs where users kept reporting of being slow, was that the users kept installing all these crap either in their browsers or autoruns. That and running Chrome! Switching to Firefox and Chromium finally made them able to multitask. Meanwhile, the other users who were "clean" were able to Photoshop/InDesign/Firefox/Chromium cleanly. Same systems. This "dirty" usage's ramifications are magnified when using an HDD as the system will keep on swapping to disk. Using an SSD will help but you'll be killing your SSD faster, especially DRAM-less ones. I even got a Pentium 4 Cedar Mill being used as a "type writer" machine for guest users. No problem there. At most, what I've disable to increase performance for HDD users is to disable the built in Windows antivirus. Superfetch eventually dies down once it stabilizes. Only had to do it for the HDD-based Pentium 4 and another HDD-based Athlon II X3. Linux is not the magic solution. It does have an environment that prevents autoruns and bloated browsers from easily happening for the common user. But at the end of the day, its all PEBCAK assuming okay hardware and clean & lean software config. Anything more than a Core 2 Duo should be fast enough. Especially so anything starting from Sandy Bridge. Skylake/Zen and above is a bonus.

They need a lot more time to improve before really being seen as worthwhile. It is also going to run at 15w TDP. Which is gonna limit the performance of its 12 threads by a fair bit. An E8400 running at 3.2 ghz with a 400mhz base clock could surpass an I3-2100 back in the day. Mostly due to its really large low latency L2 cache. Dont forget, penryn's cache was 6mbs and 12 cycles. Being twice the size of the 2100's 3mb that was at a much higher latency in the 40's. And an IPC that was not all that bad compared to Sandy Bridge (25% lower or so). Until games started needing more threads, than things like the sound would glitch and such. So assuming we use a game that both CPU's could run proficiently, I would suspect the 6900 could double the tuned E8400. The IPC has gained quite a bit since the Sandy Bridge days.

    They'll probably be using failed i3 cpus to make these, that's usually what they do, the celerons are often graded i3 failures, which in turn are probably failed i5 and so on, so you could argue they're doing a good thing by using chips that otherwise would be thrown away. Of course if their production rate is high then they might be disabling perfectly good i3 and i5 cpus to make these crippled celerons.

    @@pietrocavicchioli6128 I use i3 as well for my laptop and my NUC but they have at least 4 threads. But I guess 2 threads is enough for some work. I just wouldn’t want anything less than at least 2 cores with hyperthreading like the Pentium.

    "2 cores without hyperthreading hasn’t been enough for a long time. " Ah yes, hasn't been enough for so long that... oh, you can play most games, many at 60FPS even... yeah, sooo bad, specially for a CPU that is designed for simple office-stations were even a single core would be more than enough. "At least when you need to have a lot of programmes and chrome tabs open like at my work." Ah, so a 2 core is not enough cause you are running many programs for nothing in the background just to stress the system... suuuurrreee Just as a reminder: It is normal for big software development companies that the programmers are working on small mobile laptops and they have more than enough performance for that, let alone office work.

    7:18 Weird. Recently, I tested Forza on the LGA775. Unfortunately, the game didn't work, so I checked on a Pentium G620. All settings on the lowest, 720p, and it got around 30-40fps with drops, but it worked.

    that could be a good cpu if it came with the mother board or costs 15 bucks and mb 40, but prices today are out of rails. 135 bucks just the cpu and mb wtf is this world came to. also will spend a least another 250 for the rest of the build, wihouth a gpu if you ad a gpu the price will double to 700 dolars for a machine that cannot play anyting properly, with this money you could get a ps5 with a fair tv. pc gaming its a rip-off yeah.

    RDR2 still uses an older single lane render pipeline so it is not nearly as stuck, it does everything it needs to do to draw a frame serially. FarCry 6 uses much more modern render techniques where the work pipe is split up into 4 separate jobs and then compiled together to try and get more done in parallel. If you have to stack 4 jobs that are expected to be received in parallel on one or two threads, there's going to be massive delays drawing a frame while it is waiting for work to be done. Things that it is expecting to complete in 1 clock cycle now takes 4, there's just not going to be a way to make games engineered from the ground up for quad cores and higher to work on dual cores.
