On October 28th an unsung hero, Jan Zwartendijk, who saved 2200 Jews from the Nazis in 1940, is being remembered through a special award for ‘righteous gentiles’. The 1997 recipient of this American-Jewish award, Swiss security guard Christoph Meili, was forced to flee Switzerland after saving Holocaust-related documents. This is Zwartendijk’s story, told by his sons and the people he saved. Zwartendijk was honorary Dutch Consul in Lithuania when he found a way to help Jews escape from Europe. Under Dutch law no visa was required to visit the Dutch Carribean Island Curaçao, only written permission. Zwartendijk’s simple words “No Visa to Curaçao Necessary” enabled Jews to get transit visas for Japan, followed by exit visas to escape Lithuania. The news spread like wildfire that the Dutch Consul offered a way out. For nine days Zwartendijk worked day and night stamping his magic words again and again. He was shocked by people falling to their knees begging for help, even offering gold. He didn’t want money. His son remembers how tired his father was, resting just one day out of nine. Zwartendijk was always modest; he only learned he’d saved so many just before he died in 1976.

i recently watched a documentary on Chiune Sugihara who helped jews escaping lithuania by providing "transit" visas to japan - many (or most - or all) those had "entrance" visas for Carao provided by Zwartendijk - whose efforts were sanctioned by the Dutch ambassador to the Baltic States L. P. J. de Decker - (the erratic Soviet government provided the 3rd necessary part - "exit" visas) those 3 names - de Decker - Zwartendijk - Sugihara - deserved to be remembered in tandem for saving the lives of over 2000 jews - (no need to point out many or most that those who didn't make their escape from Lithuania didn't survive the war). there are many other rescuers who worked independently - 1) i recently watched a documentary on Sir Nicholas Winton who managed to bring over 600 jewish children to England before the breakout of war - 2) i have recently purchased a book on the french village Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and its surroundings that aided maybe 3000 jews - 3) another book i recently purchased called "Saving the Jews" on many gentiles who often risked their lives saving jews in Israel these gentiles are honored as “Righteous Among the Nations” - but even non-jews like me can be moved by these very poignant and inspiring lives

Thank you for prividing this useful information. I've always been curious about the people who perphaps weren't known for their courageous deeds behind the scenes during WW2. I feel extremely grateful for these human beings, regardless if I'm never gonna meet them. I know that what they did will be remembered forever in history.

Now there are THREE righteous, that helped Jews escape certain death. 1) Oscar Schindler saving 2000. 2) lrena Sendler saving 2,500 children through the ''Zegota'' council. And 3) Jan Zwartendijk saving 2,200 lives. That comes to 6,700 people SAVED by these precious souls that put themselves in danger. lrena Sendler was SEVERELY tortured, for her part in saving children an babies. There is a movie about her, where she is played by Anna Paquin.

@@nx7914 Yes he did but in conjunction with Jan Zwartendijk. Zwartendijk made the Curacao visa's and Siguhara provided the transit visas through Japan. Though they both lived in the same city they never worked together on the visas, they just both did the right thing

If I can see God I see it in Jan Zwartendijk. At the risk of his own life without Diplomatic immunity the man performed this miracle. The best way to respect JanZwartendijk is to have many more awards in his name for bravery towards saving humans. 👍👍
