I’m pretty shocked at how much y’all liked this. And didn’t really explain why! I was dying to hear why on earth you thought this ending was so superlative??

Okay, what about the obvious references to something Super Natural going on? Was convinced this was supposed to be some kind of Haunting Movie. They even makes references with the door magically opening and the weird shit with the horse freaking out and the just surfacing from it's grave? Clearly there is the implication of something super natural, but they never pay it off. It just fades to black and ends with no explanation for the weird shit that actually happened. BTW - Who shoots a horse just because it might be sick? Maybe call a Horse Vet first and not a farmer with a gun, maybe the horse just had some bad hay.

Right?? That’s what I came here for too. It seems to be a thing completely overlooked by so many reviewers… I mean, how can you not talk about the horse resurfacing and still breathing upon first discovery?

Good film. Jude Law is sooo good in this. That cab scene with him and the driver was top notch acting. Law had such a fantastic year of acting in 2020.

Thank you for the Review. I thought the movie was very slow paced, confusing and disappointing. Interesting study of a social climber who never quite makes it but we are rooting for him.

I couldn't get thru it for 2 days. Finally day 3 (whew) I completed the entire movie- happily skipping thru bits I've seen. All actors are great. From the smallest role to main character(s). Cons: Slow. Dark. Did I mention slow? Absolutely nothing's triumphant. Elongated scene(s). Sucky ending & there's Never a resolution. So, if you like those movies where you ask (seconds before credits) I wonder what happens next? This is surely a movie for you.

Yeah. I agree, there is little to time establish the film, other than the music. A good film nonetheless, with great performances all round.

I'm sorry but this movie is not worth anyone's time. The acting was mediocre, the story nothing knew, the tempo itself was long and draggy and as for the message that's nothing knew either. Just goes to show that sometimes you need to look around and be grateful for what we do have. There's nothing wrong in wanting to grow, move forward and try new things - not at all. But this man was given the wrong impression of how to make it in life - seems he took his youth and poverty and turned it into the path he followed like so many before him and after him. Bullshit really doesn't work in real life and if it does - it is fleeting. It left me with sense of boredom. I am not normally this strict but even Jude's acting didn't help. Thanks.

Just watched it. It is so miserable I had to leave the cinema half way through. Just what we need in these COVID times a depressing movie about a greedy man who breaks up his family. First world problem, 'Oh dear I cannot meet the payments for the castle I just rented', sorry not feeling the empathy

I agree. He was terrible and he got away with it. Just like many men like him in real life. There was no pay off, and he didn’t suffer enough. The children still seemed to idolise him and resent the mother. So despite it all, he still won. Not cathartic and generally dull

I just watched this. Enjoyed the soundtrack from my teen years and the acting. Love me some Carrie Coon but the story didn’t really add up. I dislike so many film festival types as this one with no clear story arc or ending. Also for a film set in the 80s, the costume design was lacking. And yes to the Jimmy Sommerville mention and the daughter taping the Thompson Twins off her boombox!
