The Nepalese Honey That Makes People Hallucinate

Ойын-сауық

Nepal’s Gurung people live mostly in small villages in the vast Annapurna mountain ranges. In this remote region, they practice an ancient tradition of honey hunting where they descend towering cliffs on handmade ladders, to harvest honey nestled under jagged overhangs.
In spring, the Gurung’s honey contains a rare substance called grayanotoxin from rhododendron flowers that’s known for its intoxicating effects. While some accounts say it’s a deadly poison, others refer to it as an aphrodisiac, powerful medicine, and a hallucinogenic drug.
VICE travelled deep into the Annapurna mountains to join a Gurung village on their spring hunt and understand Mad Honey's effects.

@@nomaschalupas2453 Exactly right. I can agree with you in full confidence because I have personally experienced a short journey/stay on an atoll in the Pacific Ocean that had no phones, no tv, no wifi, and no stores (yes, no stores). The people and the community lived life happily and everyday was literally fun. Everything you needed was provided on the island and you could get it yourself. If you were hungry, go fishing with a friend uncle or neighbor, if you were thirsty, climb one of the coconut trees and get yourself a coconut or drink from the many wells. There were also chickens, and crabs running around as well and if you wanted to eat them start a fire. Americans usually think primitive life is sad or scary, but it really is not. Life is so good and care free there that the people live up to the age of 90s before they finally rest.

The psychedelic honey and the stoner village isnt even the highlight of this video. Its the hospitality of the Nepalese. The beauty of the culture. The simplicity of it all. "maybe we dont need to hunt for honey as a necessity, but we want to continue what our ancestors did". Such a simple, slow paced lives these guys lead in the small towns. The lives some people lead in same subcontinent as mine could be so different, thats what I took from this video.

the guy brought up a very interesting topic... nobody forces them to work, they just do it for the simple happiness it brings back to the community. the people enjoy the product and respect those who harvested it. in our society we are forced to work jobs we hate and most of the time they are useless. when they are actually useful the pay is low and the workers' efforts aren't properly appreciated and respected or they're taken for granted.

  • @Taserth

this is the classic opinion of a person who did nothing remarkable in his/her life or didnt achive anything worthy. You are forced to work in a job you hate because you never pursued the job you love. You arent earning much money because you are not good at what you doing or what you call useful isnt useful at all or what you do is not unique. There are tons of useful jobs that pay really good amount. And still if you dont like the society you live in feel free to live on an island or go to Nepal and be a young honey hunter like the ones in the video who you envy.

Works in a communal level because my friend all of the people from the villages are from the same sub caste and thus are homogeneous.. if you apply this to the entire country it fails. Trust me I'm from Nepal. The villages and cities are very very different... On a national level this very sense of community is tarnished because now community means people who are also different from you...

That place is INCREDIBLE, it could have come straight out of a fantasy novel. The insane height/beauty of those cliffs, mind blowing size/number of cliff dwelling bee's and their hives. Another drug.."medicine" i never heard of. Couldn't have asked for a better insight into Nepalese culture and some of their traditions. Well done!!! ..Now, where can i find some of that honey???

They do. I met a woman in Nepal on the way to Kalinchwok mountain - hours away from any town. She was a milk harvestor from Buffalo - up in the mountain during the off season so the buffalo could feed. We all got chatting, and she invited us all back the next day offering to feed us some curd and a good meal. This was not irregular, most strangers we met offered us a meal or to come see them again. Nepalese tradition is very respectful and welcoming.
