I particularly appreciate the point made about the extent of the range of the Neanderthals. I suspect that will be proven to be much broader, as new evidence is found. Great Q & A! I always appreciate the work of, and communication abilities of Chris Stringer (not to mention his intelligence and great critical thinking attributes).

Suggesting that communication "may" have existed is a bit cautious - I can communicate with my dog in fairly crude terms. I think we can assume that combinations of hand signals, different noises and facial expressions would have sufficed.

Isn’t it funny that the world knows this much about self but still choose to inflict upon Africa and all other ethnic backgrounds ... it’s almost biblical

The teeth in the Neanderthal skull look very different in size and shape, but they didn't mention that. I wonder about what characteristics we may have taken from Neanderthals. I read somewhere that red hair was supposed to have come from Neanderthals but I don't know how accurate that statement is. Did we get positive attributes from Neanderthals I wonder, not just attributes that can cause disease now.

If Neanderthals had survived to the present day would their be individuals who were as messed up as some homo sapiens for example would their be some neanderthals who were serial killers or who enjoyed torture etc

An interesting fact about Neanderthal & capacity 4 *Language* Within our own genetic code there is a gene associated with the capability of creating & receiving complex communication; we know of this BC when their is a genetic defect @this spot the person is severely affected. This Exact same gene is also present within the Neanderthal genome- which still leaves it up to speculation as to how they communicated while (99.9%) settling the whole "IF" they communicated mystery

No, because modern humans do not have any MtDNA from neanderthals. We only have some of their nuclear DNA.

Is Neanderthal a species separate from our own. They can breed with modern humans and product healthy offspring that can reproduce themselves, at least through the female offspring? Species definition: a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding.

This is slightly out of date. Neanderthal, speaking using the definition of "Biological species" is the same species as modern humans. Neanderthal and modern humans mated and had viable offspring, viable meaning their offspring could reproduce. Dogs are the same species, but look very different. Neanderthal is a breed of human, not a separate species, by current definition of biological specie.

Scientists are now struggling with the definition of species. Depending on how one defines species you are correct.

Neanderthal eyeballs are larger in diameter. The back of the brain is larger. Good for vision. Their toughness would be the trait most favored in the descendants of Neanderthal-Cro Magnon interbreeding.

Where is the common ancestor

Why didn’t the Neanderthal migrate out of Europe their situations were harsh I couldn’t imagine them being intelligent if their living conduction wasn’t ideal but they never chose to migrate out until later

I can think of a language that might have involved different sounds that are meant to mean something without being sophisticated - just lots of sounds for things for instance, maybe a sound for danger, maybe accompanied by gestures like pointing.

@@heliotropezzz333 You may be right, but my understanding was always that language involves grammar and that grammar by it's very nature is complex. What you're describing is something a lot of animals do and we never call that language. But of course you may be right and thanks for responding.

Language is a form of communication and what I described is a form of communication which has conventions that a group can understand. One definition of language is: a 'method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way'.

Grunting, body language, expressions, gestures, intonation, laughing(?); and shoving, pushing, pulling, striking. A lot can be said without structured language. Ancient languages were probably as complex as modern ones, but nothing can really be said about them

I too am 3.7 % neanderthal as per my DNA test. Iam short and stocky built large rib cage small hips. When I was pregnant they did an xray of my pelvis said it was very small compared to my shoulders and large rib cage dr made the comment if they were to find my skeleton it could be mistaken for a young adolescent male lol
