I worked at Carderock 1972-1977 and enjoyed it greatly. Met my wife there. It's a unique facility in all the world. Built in the 1930s to replace a tiny facility down at the Washington Navy Yard. The main tow tank is 5/8 of a mile long and built to conform to the curvature of the earth, which they did without the aid of computers or lasers. Back in the 1970s the USA Olympic Kayak Team would sometimes train in there. Lots of scientific disciplines on the campus; about 2000 employees and usually about 200 are PhD types. At one time they had some German wind tunnels brought over after WW-2. There is a huge storage room under the east end of the main tow tank that looks like that scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark where they keep putting large boxes into storage. It was a memorable 4.5 years of my working life.

The lack of lights/sunlight makes it eerie. Makes the water look dark and murky and you can't see what's underneath. If the water was clear and there wasn't a roof I'd jump right in.

As a Navy veteran, I felt more comfortable in and under the water than I did on solid ground. Miss it terribly.

It’s the unknown. You don’t know what is under the water. It’s unknown how deep that is in case someone who visited couldn’t swim. It’s unknown what kind of equipment they have under the water that is life threatening. That’s why I’m afraid of it.

What’s the water pressure like to the houses in the near vicinity?

Very cool. We've had facilities like this since before WW2. Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ has two smaller pools that were built for the same purpose. One was a 300 ft. long tow tank that was used to test hulls and how aircraft performed during water landings (crashing). Currently known as the Davidson Lab.

Worked at this place before and saw this particular facility. It's cool.

The scariest scenario involving that pool, would be someone leaving a floater, like in CaddyShack. Although in the movie it turned out to be just someone’s “Baby Ruth” candy bar.

The fact that humans can recreate the ocean is both scary and fascinating but still scary .

I see this as the next evolution of warfare: Battlebots, the Navy edition. Not only will computers fight our battles for us, the will also do it at sea, and the new ships are so small, people can’t fit on them anyway.

I think that the lack of lighting is for the employees.. spending 8-12 hours a day in there, if there were bright lights all the time, would give the employees headsplitting migraines.

@towels towels 1. They do use it for special warfare training and they do swim in it. 2.Most of my taxes are federal and not state. I'm curious if you've never paid taxes? The federal rate is a lot higher unless you are at the very bottom.

I don’t know if it’s the lighting in the pool or just how uncanny it is but this scares me more than the actual ocean

something about it being controlled, it being enclosed and not being able to see the sky, the waves, it being dark, it being massive and deep and not knowing what’s in there as well as it being able to have things machines tested in it gives me major anxiety

Since it’s on a military base, there’s staff surrounding the base 24/7 constantly and it’s guarded, fenced with sensors so I don’t ever think you’d get “stuck there at night with nobody around you”...

Deep below the INL in Idaho there is a huge waterfilled cavern. My friend worked there and said she saw a 1/5 nuclear sub they used when developing the above ground ones. It used to be called INEL. It is not far from the Craters of the Moon Monument. Also not far from Arco, Idaho which was the first town ever to be lit up with atomic power. Not far from The Lost River that disappears into the ground yet seeps out at the Thousands Springs cliffs next to the Snake River.

Yep. Guys from Carderock regularly went to Idaho and the Bahamas as alternate test sites.

Its cool that they were testing a miniature model of the USS Zumwalt in there.

I don’t know why but this pool makes me feel uncomfortable and I would hate to swim in it. It makes me feel ill and faint. Who else agrees

Yes especially since I already have a fear of dark deep dimly lit pools and plumbing like toilet tanks and sewers. Water towers and dams give me anxiety attacks as well💀

Cool place. Also they have the shop that builds all the ships models you might see when visiting larger Navy bases. Another cool still working tool they had when I visited was the German wind tunnel that was used to develop the V1/V2 rockets in WWII. Kind of like pirate booty!
