Lyrics:
I wasn't starting yet, I didn't even think you were listening
I wasn't ready at all to say anything about anything interesting
It's a thing you have, you just don't know that you do it
You wait around in a conversation while I get in and start stumbling through it
I was so distracted then
I didn't have it straight in my head
I didn't have my face on yet
Or the role or the feel of where I was going with it all
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud
Got to my feet feeling that I'd let you down
Wanted to say it slow and perfect but it all somehow got switched around
Something went off on its own, my dumb automatic chit chat
It's not what I meant to say at all, there's no way you can attach me to that
Got up to seize the day
With my head in my hands feeling strange
When all my thinking got mangled
And I caught myself talking myself off the ceiling
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud
Oh, where are all the moments we'd have?
Oh, where's the brain we shared?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
Oh, what happened to the wavelength we were on?
Oh, where's the gravity gone?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
You found the ache in my argument
You couldn't wait to get out of it
You found the slush in my sentiment
You made it sound so intelligent
You can stop and start an athlete's heart
How do I feel about it?
I would love to have nothing to do with it
I would like to move on and be through with it
I'll be over here lying near the ocean making ocean sounds
Let me know if you can come over and work the controls for a while
I was so distracted then
I didn't have it straight in my head
I didn't have my face on yet
Or the role or the feel of where I was going with it all
I was suffering more than I let on
The tropic morning news was on
There's nothing stopping me now
From saying all the painful parts out loud
Oh, where are all the moments we'd have?
Oh, where's the brain we shared?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving
Oh, what happened to the wavelength we were on?
Oh, where's the gravity gone?
Something somehow has you rapidly improving

The phases of listening to a new song by The National. First listen: it’s okay but not as good as (fill in the blank.) 2nd listen: something clicks. 3rd listen: new favorite song that you can’t live without.

It does not necessarily work that way.

I feel your pain. 💕 I did the same with a woman 5 years ago. I still think she was the love of my life and walking away was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. But now I am happier, stronger and a better person for not letting her constantly drag me down anymore. You WILL feel the same, one day. Believe me.

I feel you, currently going through this. I refused to believe he was a narcissist but he's leaving me for a job he's not even guaranteed to get. Good luck to him, my life is worth more than dealing with his irresponsible behavior and desire to move all over thr place. Once our lease is over, I'm out.

Sorry guys, I know how sensitive fans can be, but this is the best song by these guys ever. It´s one of those songs, you hear, you listen to and the world stops. For a few minutes there´s only the song and your feelings and nothing else.

Love it. As I get older (into my mid 30's now) it's comforting to know that the bands who were so crucial during my development are still making great music. Not every band can do it. Thanks guys.

It's great that The National gave a new platform to the rising stars in their last album, but I think every The National fan wanted more of them. I kept thinking, "it would have been amazing to have the authentic The National sound with some well-known guests (Bon Iver, Sufjan, Phoebe, etc.). And guess what? They did exactly that!

Love this song. Will say though that the lyrics are coming from an anxious-avoidant attachment style. Makes me think of my ex and how no matter what we try to help create a safe environment, we are never enough for them - ask for their needs, they still run away without giving it a chance. If only love was not scary for them. Wish it was enough. Takes trust, communication, and compromise. Rest well my heart. Rest well. Thank you for a wonderfully timely song

Yeah, I heard that too. One of the things that I appreciate about The National is that their lyrics really speak to neurodivergence. Dysautonomia sucks. I do what I can to manage myself, but it never really goes away. Sure wish it would.

I like this song a lot... There's something confessional about it... Oh... I like the cover image, too. It's quite a statement: Paul needs a "name tag" stuck to his decapitated head because most people won't get the reference... Now let's talk about the first two pages of Frankenstein! ha ha
