The Kudaka family style of Shorinji-ryu has a front kick instead of the simple nami gaeshi in their Naihanchi. So maybe to some extent what Motobu sais is correct. In Koryu Uchinadi the step and slide before the footsweep was added to the kata and it works great for me in resembling kuzushi.

I think every technique in kata is without footwork. Footwork is extremely dynamic and is therefore difficult to abstract into a kata.

Large part of the reason why kata is not functional. It’s an ornamental practice.
