The N64 And The Overhyping Of Nostalgia

The N64 has oft been considered the greatest console of all time however, under closer inspection; it's quite the opposite.

The funny thing is, The Beta Version was actually way better than the released game itself. It was actually a passion project but the company was forced to redo the game under a such a time constraint which is why the game was really shitty in it's final release state. Superman 64 is a tragic result of limitations imposed by other authoritative cuntpanies.

Looking back at the N64, it feels like a Nintendo beta console that was 2-3 year from being done, and that is was an console which offered 20-30 games worth of buying. Because there were so many areas around the n64 that could have been made better, which you raised. While I found that large parts of the console's game library were very bad, with the exceptions being very few (Nintendo games, Rare) However, the things that make me remember the N64 as something special(Nostalgic) were the console's ability to push 3d gaming forward, the console's ability to push 4 player gaming, And getting to play some well-known ips based on varied tv/Movie franchises (Southpark, Superman, Star wars) Which was more than often bad.

Over the years from watching many game reviews and footage of N64 games, I don't like the way these games look graphically? They're always blocky as hell with textures smeared everywhere in multiple directions and jagged edged polygonal environments. I would go as far to say most PS1 games look better. I never grew up with an N64, maybe I would have a different opinion otherwise, but I can't ignore this fact.

  • @supersmashmaster43

Both consoles have really aged horribly. PS1 games that are 3D usually have super pixelated textures and no texture filtering and the games have no Anti Aliasing, so the models are all jagged. There's only a handful of games that aged well, but those are games that didn't experiment with 3D, mainly 2D games. I really hate how the N64 didn't have much 2D games cause they wanted to push 3D so hard back then, but it doesn't mean there couldn't have been more 2D games.

I think the logic around the N64 controller was "We have to make this different to the PlayStation controller because we can't be like Sony" It's the same reason that the N64 uses cartridges instead of CDs, Nintendo welched on deals with both Sony and Philips - the patent holders to the CD format. Sony got the PlayStastion out of it, Philips got Mario games on the CD-i... I think Sony got the best deal. Also got to love the fanboy comparisons, give someone an N64 with two games and a PS1 with one game and they'd laugh at the console with one game... Yeah, if you give someone borm between 1995 and 2006 an Atari Jaguar with two games and an N64 with one game, they'll laugh at the N64. As for those saying that the N64 is the best console of all time... they're probably playing an emulator with upscaled graphics and an XBOX One controller.

your point makes absolute no sense, the PS1 controller is very similar to the SNES controller. Why would Nintendo make a controller different from their own design just because Sony did a controller that is similar to their previous controller? Nintendo tried to innovate with the analog stick but they didnt know how to design it. They made it better on the Gamecube. Its worth mentioning that the PS1 first controller didnt have analog stick, only the D-Pad. So no, they weren't trying to make the controller to be different from Sony's

Most of the popular games for it have been remade and are arguably better It's the least of it's generation, but there's still enough great games that I think it's worth owning, I also think it's worth arguing that there are better third party controllers than the official one, and that makes a big difference. Being born in 2003 I never played N64 games as a kid, I grew up with the Wii and DS. When I started to play retro games a few years back, I was always frustrated with how absolutely garbage Mario 64 feels to control compared with Galaxy or even Sunshine. It doesn't matter to me how revolutionary the game was at the time to me since I wasn't alive. I judge all older titles the same no matter what. It has always been a bit frustrating to me seeing KZreadrs hype up the N64 because of nostalgia. It's so funny to me as well that SNES games seem to hold up better than N64 ones, I guess the awkward jump to 3D didn't help with the games on the system. They're just so awkward and clunky compared to anything before or after them

I feel the same way about the SNES and N64 as you. The Snes is no doubt more fun, but I have a certain admiration for N64. I only ever played it at a friend's house, but it was just hard to get into. I admire, and have great respect for it. The third dimension was a whole new leap for gaming, so it was going to be a bit jankey. The SNES, while certainly inventive in it's own right, mostly improved what the NES did. I think the N64 would have faired better if it had some more 2D games that took advantage of the hardware rather than all 3D games.

The thing is, if you have those games and can fulfill your sudden urge for nostalgia at anytime you think of it, of course the hype will be a little overboard. However, for someone who had these games, lost them, grew into a life where affording the games is doable however bills exists: ( I would love to sit there and replay some games from the N64 to see that dark fog that's like 20m out that looks super ominous but it's there to help the N64 handle graphics lol. Or like, how the flat textures gave me dreams. I remember the thumbstick for the N64 always being so fragile and dumb. Always getting loose. I would wrap the wire around the controller differently so that the thumbstick wouldn't be damaged. Or place it on the dresser with the controller up. Or like .. oh idk.

Ok, here's why you're fucking wrong. I'm kidding. A lot of your points are very right. the idea that they chose to stick with cartridges baffles me, any cross platform games, you're stupid to pick the N64 title over the others. My only real complaint is ripping apart the controller. a 3-pronged controller would be completely idiotic if it were ever intending for you to use all 3 prongs at once, which no game did. the way it's designed, it basically gives you 3 different ways of holding the controller, giving games the option to use 3 different control schemes(which no games really did, admittedly except for like, the Pokemon Stadium minigames). and while the thumbstick is in no way even passable by today's standards, "it was the first but it was the worst" is testament enough that it was a new idea and definitely needed work. Looking at the previous console's controllers, it was still an absolute step up. it was comfier to hold and had more options. Now, keep in mind I was a Playstation kid, not getting an N64 until I already had a Wii. the N64 in general was pretty weak, I'm gonna agree with you. I just think the controller is way undervalued.

However, I differ on the topics of load time & cut-scenes... it could be that I grew up on the n64 so it informed or set my opinions on this topic (or maybe I have ADHD, or a short attention span)... but I 100% abhor loading screens. Nothing makes me want to shut a game off and go outside more than waiting for a game to load. Never really cared for cut-scenes in games either, if given the option to skip them, I often do. Just my opinions here.

I remember back in 2013 when me and my younger brother attended an Anime Convention in Portland (said younger brother being born in 1995 like that example you mention specified). They had an N64 set up with Goldeneye and we decided to try it out. Suffice to say... we did not enjoy ourselves. The game itself aged like milk and the controller felt so unnatural in my hand, no matter how I held it it always felt wrong. Acting like anyone would choose the N64 over the PS1 with no prior knowledge of either is an idiotic argument because if that were the case, the N64 would have outsold the PS1 back in the day since we too had to choose between the two with no prior knowledge of either. It's fine if people think of it as THEIR favorite console ever, but to say it's the objective best is idiotic at best.

I think that using the CD would not save some of the most varied flaws of the Nintendo 64 such as the low number of polygons, the limited cache for textures (it would not help to improve much in the graphics). The fact that it doesn't support RGB and also the fact that it doesn't have a dedicated sound chip. Not to mention that games at 60 frames almost don't exist on this console, especially if we compare it to the Sega Saturn and PlayStation. The 3DO M2, which was supposed to come out at the same time as the Nintendo 64 (if Panasonic hadn't given up after seeing the success of the PlayStation) would be much more impressive.

These are pretty solid arguments, although I disagree with the controller argument. It's not the best controller by any means but the games for the most part, knew how to design themselves around them. Even the analog stick works pretty well for games like Mario 64 or Ocarina of time (I've tried playing emulations and the GameCube version of Ocarina and found them to control much worse than on the original hardware personally). But the hardware was a solid enough argument, that in my opinion applies to pretty much all of Nintendo's consoles (excpetions being the SNES and GameCube to a lesser extent)

The N64's library isn't great, in fact, it's the console's biggest weakness by far, with just over 300 games to choose from, most of which are very poor quality cash grabs or several different versions of the same sports games (practically none of which have stood the test of time). In fact, you could argue that the N64's library is worse than the NES's, and I'd say it's not just worse, it's worse by far. The NES is no wonder, many of the games are low-quality ports compared to the arcades of the time, but at least we have a more or less varied range of styles. If I had to spend time in prison and had to choose between the NES and the N64, I would choose the NES without thinking twice, with all those arcade games, shooters, 2D platformers and even puzzles and RPGs, I would have acceptable options for a long time, much more options than the N64 and its blurry and obsolete games, running at 20 fps with monstrous input lag.

Therefore, I am physically unable to play the console and therefore it's library of games. I'd love to play OoT and MM and I've tried suffering through the motion sickness but I just couldn't do it past the first dungeon in OoT. I may try those 2 games on the 3ds but I can't seem to get a clear answer if the games look and run better on the 3ds. I don't think Nintendo had any clue how important CGI and voice acting were going to become, as Nintendo has always just made video games and never focused much on story or the cinematic elements of games. I never had a problem with the N64 controller but then again I'm not a stickler for controllers. Imo the biggest issue with the N64 was a lack of 3rd party support and certain genre's (fighting, RPG) being terribly underrepresented.

You have the benefit of criticizing it after controls evolved and streamlined into what we have today. Hindsight is 20/20. I can tell you when we were playing Goldeneye, outside of the tired keyboard and mouse argument, no one thought the game was lacking because it could have controlled better. No one thought of a second stick and the scheme we have now. And honestly using the C buttons to strafe wasn't all that bad. I can still go back and play it smoothly today.

No, there were fundamental improvements in videogame controls that needed to happen. The N64 came before those changes, so once those changes were implemented, everything before it became obsolete and poor by comparison. If say, the steering wheel in cars used to be done with a lever, but then the steering wheel was invented and made steering 100X easier, nobody would use the lever if the wheel were available; and sure as hell nobody would try and defend the lever over the wheel. It doesn't matter what hindsight is, most N64 games play worse than modern counterparts or remakes fundamentally. Context or not, hindsight or, that is an undeniable fact that hinders the games system wide. It's not unfair, it's reality.

@@RegretfulDeadMan But until the steering wheel came about, all people would know is the lever. It's only when they get the steering wheel can they go "huh, this is way better than the lever." It goes into the argument that surrounded RE2's remake and the tank controls of the older game. Or even take Tomb Raider. 3D was new, but our idea of how to control a character was still being developed. RE2 had tank controls in part due to the fixed camera, but it wasn't until Devil May Cry that Capcom thought about making directional input relative to camera and not the character. Tomb Raider was developed for a Dpad. To say "well 10 years later we came up with better 3D controls so they're bad" is an odd position to take. You have to look at it in its contemporary setting imo

Like your videos but this one i have to disagree on many points. I grew up with both ps1 and n64 during their launch. I agree that ps1 was more cinematic and crisp sounding, but the 3d graphics was horrible with the warping polygons. The floors, walls, sky all warp and misaligned when you move just a bit. This is not the case w the n64. Also load time is non existent in the n64. If you want to talk about wrestling games, nothing can compare to what was available on the n64, come on THQ. What ps1 have over the N64 is just the sheer amount of games and course the RPGs. As for the controllers, neither myself or the group of friends that I game with back then ever mentions anything about the controllers. It was just something we were able to transition without a thought of what was better, ps1 or n64. The controllers just worked for whatever we were playing. Either way I am a fan of both console and controller and do have a large collection of games for them that I still play to this day. I personally grew up with both the N64 and PS1, and so to anyone who says that anyone if forced to choose between the two that they would laugh at the PS1, I completely disagree. I loved the PS1 far more than the N64. Honestly, the only two games I cared for on the N64 were Super Smash Bros. and Mickey's Speedway USA, and yes, I did have Banjo-Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, and some Pokemon games, but I never liked Pokemon, didn't really care too much for Banjo-Kazooie (playing it now on my Xbox 360 I care for it more now, but even then, it's not a game that I love by any means) and even as a child I thought Mario Kart 64 was boring, thus the reason why I played Mickey. Seriously, the PS1 was so much better. Crash Team Racing is still in my opinion probably the best kart racer ever, I loved Crash Bash, Rampage, Spyro, and a bunch of games that I honestly can't remember the names of (but still have left an impact on me). So, as someone who grew up with both, the PS1 is far better, something I even as a 6 year old who couldn't even beat children's video games on the easiest level knew (mainly due to the fact that the PS1 had a much bigger impact on me, and had far better games).

The favoritism at the time especially in reviews and the revisionist history is the reason this needs to be said. Honestly ff7 should have the legacy of a witcher 3 but we all have to pretend OOT is the greatest game ever because fan boys. If you're a younger person getting into retro gaming you can pretty much skip all but 15 games of the n64 library. But you wouldn't know that if you paid attention to the zeitgeist. While retro gaming is a different beast because you never know how a game is going to hit 25 years later. Would I recommend resident evil 1 or mgs, no I'd probably tell you to play the gamecube version. Would I sing the praises of games that have better iterations later like front mission probably not. But there is a laundry list of ps1 games that are great even by today's standards. Re2 and 3, parasite eve 1 and 2, ff7 8 9 tactics, suikoden 2. And the thing is there is a lot more like probably more than 50. Even now I found out persona 2 had an unreleased game translated years later and is it for everybody? No but as a fan of rpgs I'm enjoying the shit out of it in 2021. Why does this matter because if I was a kid today and people told me the n64 was better than the playstation and the best thing since sliced bread. Then I try it and walk away feeling like that was dogshit. Well if that was the best the 5th gen could do, why would I even bother looking into the playstation.

@@monkeyinalamborghini It is a great game indeed, and deserves the hype it gets. But its not revolutionary, having great production values and graphics doesn't mean that the game brought something new gameplay-wise, it certainly didn't. Just like The Witcher 3 didnt, despite being another great game. Ocarina of Time did, there wasn't anything like it on the PS1

@@mattlarrubia That's kind of magical thinking, we could play a semantic game about what makes a videogame innovative and I could try to satisfy your conditions. I'll get back to this. Revolutionary not really. On ps1 there was alundra and I'm sure a few other zelda clones. I'll give OOT that, it was innovative and different, if other companies could of made a zelda game they would have tried. But it didn't have the influence of tony hawk for extreme games genre or resident evil for survival horror. I think zelda did a few new things but looking at gaming as a whole it's hard to find a new mechanics that didn't exist somewhere. Zelda going 3d is probably as big a deal as grand theft auto going 3d and maybe returnal although I haven't played it. PS1 didn't have the hardware to make a 3d game like zelda, N64 didn't have the storage to make most ps1 games. Brave Fenser musashi is probably as close as you'll get. But I judge games on quality. I played a bit of OOT and if you're telling me OOT is better than gran turismo 2 or metal gear solid. To quote ron burgundy "I don't believe you". N64 had an amazing launch but squaresoft probably had more talent and was on their level. Namco with tekken, capcom with resident evil, konomi with sotn and metal gear. Point being after square left nintendo, fans were left with mario and zelda, so to justify their purchase they started getting irrational with rating those games. At the same time the people who made chrono trigger, ff6 and super mario rpg were now not as good as nintendo. I've seen lots of developers go on crazy runs bethesda, square, bioware, capcom, sega, from software. I'd never make the argument that ES oblivion is head and shoulders above everything else because magical, magic.

The N64 controller is one of the biggest POS I've ever had the displeasure of using. You need 3 hands to properly operate the thing.

Honestly, the moment someone has to say, "You don't like it because you didn't grow up with it," that says more about the thing they're talking about than the person they're talking about it to. If you "had to be there", if you cannot go back to something and honestly say, "Yup, this is still great," then it's not timeless by any means, especially when something like the Nintendo 64, the PlayStation 2, or - to a lesser extent - the Xbox 360 is home to some of the worst ways to play the majority of its library (with some Ratchet- and Jak-riddled exceptions).

To be fair the reason the N64 controller is a plastic trident, is supposedly because the idea was that during the transition from 2d to 3d some game developers that make 2d games would like to use the d-pad and ignore the joystick, while 3d game devs would use the joystick and ignore the d-pad. So if a game used the d-pad as it's primary means of movement you could use it and the L button, but if a game wanted you to the joystick you could use it and the Z button. Admittedly it was an answer to a problem that didn't really exist, but at least now we there was at least SOME logic behind the thing. The quality of that logic though... well I'll let you decide that. Also, the reason people consider the N64 to be the best console EVAR, has nothing to do with the console itself, and everything to do with the library that came with that console.

I could apply several things that were agressively overhyped due to nostalgia but don't actually hold up well. 1) The first three seasons of MLP (Mostly just Season 1) 2) Sonic Unleashed (Its just a tedious chore both during the day and during the night) 3) "Thomas and the Magic Railroad" (Yes "Thomas the Tank Engine" had a movie) 4) "The Powerpuff Girls Movie" (Its just a dragged out origin story. No wonder it bombed) 5) "Phineas and Ferb" (Perry the Platypus was the only enjoyable thing about that show) 6) "An American Tail: Fievel Goes West" (Have you people even seen the original?) 7)The "Super Mario Bros." movie (Its not even so bad its good anymore. Its just painful.) 8 ) Disney direct to DVD sequels. (While some like "Lion King 1 1/2" are actually good, some people try (and fail) to convince me that "Beauty & the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas" was a god sequel. My point is that nostalgia should NEVER be a deciding factor. Sooner or later people will realize that what they liked as a kid, may not be that great when they are older. If you still like what I listed as a guilty pleasure, that's fine, but if your gonna try and convince me that they are objectively good, your just shooting yourself in the foot.
