The N54 Overheating Problem... BMW 135i Track Test
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This 135i has all the right bits, and isn't running silly power, so it should be a good trackday hack, right?
Unfortunately after a couple of laps the car decides enough is enough and triggers a limp mode fault. We never worked out what it was but interested to know the KZread theories.
Overall a great car, cheers to Harry for letting me drive it!

Luv the way you jump into any motor and straight to it's edge of grip . Nice driving as usual matey 👍
One of the best looking cars you have reviewed so far! (in my opinion of course)

In my opinion, this car is the exacerbation of classic Turbocharged; vacuum cleaner sounds, go fast and sometimes very hot
Badass review, can’t wait to start tracking mine
If I've learnt anything from watching nurburg Misha it's that you need big brakes and an oil cooler before you even leave the garage
*Now then Dan! I've always liked the 1 series coupé and was lucky enough to do a good few laps of Brands Hatch in BMW UK's own 1M which was properly quick. Weirdly, it had the feel of the E30 M3 I'd driven there in from home. Moderns aren't usually my thing either, but that 135i looks well, especially in the blue.*
i'd start with using MHD to log the track runs and go from there. The usual suspects of fuelling and coil/injector issues aside, if it doesnt have a single mass flywheel it can trigger the knock sensor at high rpm. That one tortured me for a time so i thought id mention it.
Upgraded aluminium radiator (higher volume of fluid & more efficient) aditional oil cooler (higher volume of fluid & more efficient) mosselman oil thermostat and a large intercooler should be first on the list. Ive seem that set up ran on 10 60 with no issues
Wouldn’t be a dannydc2 video without a limp mode
It's a flashback to when MotorTrend did a track test between an Infiniti G37 and BMW 335i. The NA VQ37 trucked along all day, while the 335i's N55 went into limp mode after a handful of laps!
They suffer badly from heat soak, throttle goes all mushy and then cuts. Surprised it didn’t throw a bearing, likely to do soon unless addressed
Nice one
Temps seem to be a common problem with anything boosted. Definitely needs a dash putting back in, even if it's just a top cover, looking very bare! Looks a nice car though for sure!

Problem is that people wonna track a car without the necessary upgrades. Cooling is usual on the end of the list.
Id run something like MHD flash tuning so you can data log , check temps on the go etc, look back on logs at the pits ,you can also tick a option for track coolant temps which helps it run cooler, usual hardware helps too, intercooler, oil cooler.....
Nice car that, I like the blue
Twin turbo helps with the linearity as you mention in the last few minutes. Car looks good, but yeah, that interior is definitely a work in progress ahahahah Limpus dickus BMW episode 2
So how does it compare to the N/A M3?
You should try a Caterfield for summat completely different. Report back how much fun are they ✌️
Verry fast car🔥🔥
try the lower temp oil thermostat and mhd sprot cooling feature it makes a big difference

this.
Haven't had any issues with my n54 at the track limp mode related but I had a low pressure oil light (warning through mhd) come on on sharp left turns only. Using mhd sport or track cooling, mhd oil pressure feature with sensor, csf 2 row radiator with water wetter, v10 stage 2 plus 91 or 93 Octane fuel with 100 octane mix on lower boost setting, overfill 1L engine oil 5w 40 with high zinc additive, oil catch cans.... Made a video on my channel, track day was a 85F to 91F degree weather.
For cooling, you should follow what Alex Bernstein did with his old 135i. It was featured on Larry Chen’s channel.
They do get quite unhappy when the oil starts getting hot. Normal causes for EML on the N54 are misfire related though, would be interested to know the codes. MHD stage 1 or further map, uprated oil cooler and a lower temp thermostat for the oil filter housing would do wonders for this though. Standard thermostat opens at about 110c from memory

I have an n55 135i that runs 30C lower temps than stock. That's with 1 stock oil cooler. I have a lower temp thermostat & open engine bay. Also, radiator fan speeds can be set to sport & track. The n55s are also generally more stable because of additional cooling channels in the block. Even at high autobahn speeds im still 10-20c lower than stock temp.

@@DigitalDissident The single turbo on the N55 helps too, those twins get toasty AF. Open engine bay is definitely a help too, bay temps are nuts after a hard drive

@@Midnightclub1992 I did the M3 rain cowel conversion so the big surfboard is gone under the hood. Easier to access things that way too. I don't ever get near stock operating temps anymore unless im doing maybe over 250+kmh for several miles in hot weather.
Yep a mate of mine had one of these years ago when it was only a few years and still in warranty and both turbos were replaced sub 50k miles! ….under warranty. It sounded great and went well but his experience left me wary of ownership

Well it's not a Honda Civic but what else can be had for so cheap that can easily tune to over 500HP? Mine is a rare DCT model running upgraded turbos at 560bhp. The torque is insane.
Danny boy, if you were in South Africa 🇿🇦 I would have loved for you to test a few of my cars
Do you prefer the e82 ''1m'' platform above the e46 m3 ?

Is there a review of the corsa z20 🎉

I wish
ha ha. It's coolant temp (log it). Keep oil down, keep coolant down. Do88 cooler or Mosselman. I run the latter, dual.
Proper oil cooler and slloy rad and temps not a problem
I might have missed it, but what track is this? Looks fun.

They make a 123d Dan, mate used to have one was a pretty spicy daily with a map.

Yes they’re quickish but it’s only a 2.0 twin turbo…as Dan says a 3.0d in there would be fun….needs to be a 6 pot imo

Also the N47 has timing chain issues. Then again, probably nothing compared to the bills an N54 can generate!
Turboo bmw❤️
No dash always seems like overkill to me.
A BM in limp mode?! Never 🤭

Better then an e46 they'll just let you cook the engine with no warning. The useless gauge only move at 120c, overheated mine 3 times.
My N54 felt very similar to an NA car… MHD stage 1 changed that

Did the tune make it more turbo-laggy?
@jonathonturner2128
Жыл бұрын
@@darth_doge4755 not really, before the flash it was very linear power delivery. Now it feels much more like a turbo car, still has all the low down power but you get much more savage power delivery in the higher rev range. Completely transformed the car, it’s 100% worth it
13:41 *F80*
Twin turbo so pretty linear.
What were the brakes like? What was the damping like? Balance? Didn’t get any of that from the video. Think you need to talk through what you are feeling when you’re in the car. Would be better.
I was gonna buy that car, now it been distroyed 😢
