In this video, I discuss the myth of the eternal return as it is introduced in the works of Mircea Eliade, Carl Jung, Marie Luise von Franz and others. I will delve into the underlying unity of the physical and mental realities as well as the consequences of this dual-aspect-monism in our everyday lives, our self-development and our spiritual journey of individuation. This will help us understand the dynamics of the unconscious in its interaction with the ego as well as the structure of the collective unconscious as the space of the archetypes - the eternal forms.
Explore with me as we venture through this intro to Mircea Eliade and his work, especially on the sacred and the profane as well as heroic and shamanic initiations. In archaic times, man saw the world as the intersection of two dimensions: the sacred and the profane. The sacred was the plane of forms, archetypes, and categories. The plane of the profane contained all the random accidents of life.
We must do what the gods did in the beginning. For archaic man, “an object or an act becomes real only insofar as it imitates or repeats an archetype. Thus, reality is acquired solely through repetition or participation; everything which lacks an exemplary model is ‘meaningless.’ i.e., it lacks reality” (Mircea Eliade, The Myth of the Eternal Return).
It was through the technique of repetition or imitation that a concrete, otherwise profane action became universal and thus sacred for primitive man. By identifying with a myth or an archetype, man participated in ultimate reality and entered the plane of the gods, of life everlasting. He strove to escape the transitory reality of individual life, full of random and meaningless particularities - and to connect with the universal patterns of human life. For archaic man, these patterns were best captured by myths and legends.

About the Channel
In my videos, I look at Jungian topics through an interpretative lens, advancing themes discussed by Carl Jung along trajectories of psychology, psychoanalysis, theology and philosophy Carl Gustav Jung. Exploring his model of the psyche, his concept of individuation, and his philosophy in general, I explore Jung's theories about a path toward a more full and complete Self.
I mostly draw on the writings of Carl Jung. However, other psychoanalytic writers like Erich Neumann, Marie Louise von Franz, Siegmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Jordan Peterson, Mircea Eliade, and others also inform my interpretation of Jung’s texts. My understanding of psychoanalysis is also informed by research psychology, philosophy and neuroscience. I find the fields of narrative psychology, cybernetic and certain theories of perception especially helpful in the interpretation of Carl Jung.
