The Mystery of Pinewood Hospital

In this video I travel to Pinewood leisure centre between Wokingham and Crowthorne and discover its fascinating history as a Sanatorium treating tuberculosis and then its transition to a hospital in world war 2 run by the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and the New Zealand Expeditionary force. I take a look at the remaining buildings on the site and discover an air raid shelter, a surviving Nissen Hut and then venture further afield to discover the remains of a long abandoned group of Nissen Huts lost in a nearby forest.
As far as I know even Heritage England don't know its there!

There were many Nissen huts in the vicinity of Pinewood and Easthampstead Park which after the war were used as temporary housing for local family's, including mine, prior to being re-housed in the then newly constructed Skimped Hill site, now a Retail Park, there was a 1950s film staring Jack Warner filmed in these Nissen huts and a scene in the now demolished 'who'd thought it' pub just up the road.

Really enjoyed that, so much of our history is lost to "progress" and re use or re model. Shame the huts were left to rack and ruin, though I guess they may have had asbestos sheeting on the roofs or contained asbestos or lead paint. Very nice walk through and discussion as well as the history. Thank you! Look forward to more and have subscribed xx

Thank you for watching. I suspect that following the war the huts roofing which would have been corrugated steel would have been stripped off for scrap. The area around the huts has been used for a rubbish dump and i guess the land must be contaminated otherwise it would have been built upon.

Wow!! I really learned a lot from your video, thank you and memories were bought back. I recall quite a number of Nissen huts near the Wokingham road back in the early/mid 60's.

Did the track on the other side of Wokingham Road, lead to the Nissen huts up where the crematorium is now?

@@michaelmoney9445 yes that's right. Although not quite as far in as the crematorium as the blocks are only about 20m from the old wokingham road. Quite difficult to get to as the council have felled trees and placed concrete blocks by the side of the road to prevent travellers accessing the land. Theres an enormous amount of fly tipping in the area
