Released in the mid to late-70s, this educational film titled “The Mystery Crash” discusses the dangers of drinking and driving especially as it pertains to the seemingly harmless “social drinker.” This film was produced by Jack Lieb Productions Inc, Chicago and sponsored by the National Safety Council. It is part of a series of films, with each episode describing a different element of driving and road safety. This short film backtracks the events that led to a fatal car crash as a result of driving under the influence. The narrator simultaneously shares important statistics and tips that pertain to the dangers of driving while inebriated.
Opening credits overlaid the background of a totaled Chevrolet Chevy ‘63 in a rocky ravine (0:10). Man reading newspaper article about crashed Chevy ‘63 (0:27). Montage of nature scenes from a lake (0:40). Camp site of four young men drinking Schaefer beers on lake shore (0:49). A Marina employee pulls up to shore on a motorized rowboat and relays messages to one of the young men (2:22). Despite being inebriated, the men pack up the campsite and head to their car to drive back to town (3:59). Heavy rains, thunder, and lightning as night falls while the young men are driving on windy country road (4:03). Lack of visibility and oncoming traffic cause the young men to swerve and lose control (5:00). Slow motion footage of the Chevy ‘63 falling down the rocky ravine and becoming totaled (5:06). State trooper pulls up to the scene to investigate the crash (5:33). Stills highlighting the reasons behind these kinds of fatal crashes (5:49). Aerial views of an interchange or grade-separated junction of a highway and other freeways while statistics about driving are displayed (6:09). Scenes of drinkers at a dimly lit bar (6:40). Explanation on alcohol's effect on the human brain and body and the dangers of the social drinker on roadway safety (7:01). Police officer taking someone into the police station for drunk driving (7:57). Accused driver taking a breathalyzer test at the police station to test for the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) (8:06). Police officer putting driver into backseat of cop car on a rural road (8:40). Freeze-frames of the faces of the young men involved in the accident while the narrator details facts about BAC (9:00). Schaefer Beer cans (9:20). Hand holding shot glass of 86 proof whiskey (10:13). Beer being poured into a glass to highlight the slogan “One six-pack, don’t drive back” (10:33). Clips of things that contribute to lowering BAC - passage of time, exercise, fresh air, cold shower, and coffee (10:43). Cup of beer being filled from the draft at a bar (11:04). Hand of a police officer writing up a report for a DWI (11:19). Man standing behind bars in a jail cell (11:26). Hand writing out a check for legal fees (11:31). State of Illinois Department of Labor Bureau of Employment Security claimant questionnaire being filled out (11:47). Stack of $50 bills (11:54). Glass of beer returned to table half-full (12:03). Policeman standing in a rocky ravine with totaled Chevy ’63 in front of him (12:14). Black and white photo of driver of totaled car (12:38).

Fun fact: Driving exhausted/drowsy can be as dangerous as driving drunk. Arrive alive, don't drink and drive.

Well, how much? If they drank low alcohol beer, or let enough time elapse, then it shouldn’t have caused the crash.

1974. I had to watch this in Driving School in 1979 (had to take it to keep my license after being a Bad Boy.) Loved the cop cars ('74 Dodge Monaco, '73 Dodge Satellite and a '73 Bel Air.) Shame about that '63 Chevy, though. I would have liked to have that one.

Its called get there itis. All of the ingredients were reasons to slow down or stop. Instead they kept pushing. Alcohol: reason to stop. Bad weather (twice as night is a weather condition just like rain): reason to slow. Poor maintenance: reason to slow or stop depending on how bad it is. Unfamiliar road: reason to slow. Guy should have left on the boat and hitched a ride with the marina guy, then called someone to pick him up. In addition, coffee doesn’t sober you up, it just makes you a wide awake drunk. In addition, if the guy who lost his license was the only one in shape to drive, he should have driven snyway.

Back then, one cop , one cop car , no handcuffs. One police dept. Today, a few cop cars , maybe state police , sheriff and highway patrol all show up. You are definitely handcuffed , sometimes made to lay face down on the ground , your car can be searched and torn to pieces and sometimes their guns are drawn.

good video, scare tactics only work if you go ALL IN, FYI that 1/10th of 1% stuff, in Australia we just call the limit 0.05 and leave it at that, easier to say, and remember; also they left off the fact the TYPE of beer matters too, as some are 'light' or NO alcohol, others, like larger and 'craft' beers are up to 4.5% Alcohol conc. so this affects how much one can have of each. Also the volume of bottles (std. vs long neck), or the can (330ml vs 375ml).

Back in the seventies driver's ed class, we watched one called "creepy critters"it starts out with a sheriff or state trooper who is at a firey railroad accident and he's picking up parts of a body and putting it into a bottle . Then the title comes up creepy critters. As best I remember the footage was from the late 50s and early 60s.

These are fun to watch, and i'm diggin' the fashion choices occurring. I think i have the screen-used red shirt, if it was made by the shirtmaker Manhattan ..... 1974's what i'd date it. Nice greek fisherman cap, too. I got one of those but its a lot more recently produced. With all these driver safety films I watch for fun, I'm prolly the safest driver on the road lmao. "The penalties are severe" HAH! This was in the early 70s, before the formation of MADD when all you pretty much got for DWI was a slap on the wrist as long as you didn't injure anyone or cause any major property damage. Just the way it was back then, not saying it was right...........

But...BUT...they needed to go to them bars to Score with CHICKS! I grew up in the Era of "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" and "Saturday Night Fever." But, THEN...here in Michigan-the Legislature raised the Drinking Age to Nineteen. One year later, as part of a Grassroots movement: the voters raised it back up to Twenty One. Eventually-All of the states did the same. We are virtually the ONLY Nation in the World with such a high drinking age. It's Nineteen in most of Canada, and Eighteen in Mexico. In Europe, drinking is like an "R" rated movie. Parents and Guardians can pour wine for their children in restaurants, and a Dad can take his thirteen year old Son to a Pub for a Pint. ...and, you know WHAT?!? They have less Problems than here in America. They are taught responsible alcohol consumption, from an early age. Here, it's like SEX. The "Forbidden Fruit."
