The Mystery at the Bottom of Physics

Комедия

Edit as of May 2020: So. There's now a fair bit more evidence that the fine-structure constant may be variable across the universe, contradicting some of what you'll hear in this video. This is...alarming. Paper for those curious: advances.sciencemag.org/conte...
Further Correction: I pulled a stupid. The fine structure constant is given as 1/137, not 137.

No, you could not be more wrong if you worked at it. The field of computer science is very specifically concerned with the nature of computation and how it works. Gödel undecidability is a good example of this exercise. That you "use code all the time" doesn't require that you have any grasp of computational linguistics. When we design a programming language, there may be a technological motivation to produces the kind of product that you might use, say, for writing simulations. That's the motivation, properly, of SOFTWARE ENGINEERING. The motivation in COMPUTER SCIENCE to design a programming language is very different. We're looking to establish the limits of expressive power, for example at a fundamental level which grammars are sufficient for which classes of computation, for example parallelization or theorem proving or quantum computing. The goal is not to dream up mechanisms which we don't understand but to proceed through mathematical formalism a treatment of the computation that we do understand. The one notable exception - and indeed the grounds for longstanding objection by computer science formalists - is neural networks. As with genetic algorithms but much more dramatically, we understand the mechanism but not what it's doing. That's a qualitative departure from traditional forms of computation, and it's not even clear that it can be called computer science.

Fun story about anesthetics. I had a hernia surgery a few months ago and obviously, I was put under. Surgery went fine, no problems. I come home from hospital and notice that every time I start to fall asleep, something jolts me awake. Not 'oh I'm falling', more 'oh no you don't, wake the fuck up'. This happened less frequently as nights went on and after a week or three, it never happened again. I theorise that it was a part of me that wasn't put under, a sub-subconsciousness, fearing the consciousness and subconsciousness would both go under like during the surgery and wake 'me' up to prevent it. Eventually 'it' realised it won't happen again and let 'me' sleep peacefully. So I can totally see how we have no idea how anesthetics work. Who knows what we are and are not 'knocking out'? What if that sub-subconsciousness is awake during it in some sense and it's terrified? I wonder if others have the same experience. I can't find it. But then I can also hear my subconsciousness processing things in the background of my mind (different from thinking), like a dream without the time dilation, so maybe I'm just more.... Likely to experience things like that? Who knows. Fun stuff to think about while high too.

The mystery at the bottom of physics is "Why is there physics?" or more accurately "why does anything exist? why does it follow rules? And why these rules?" Maybe humanity will discovery these answers, maybe it won't, but those are the questions that everything else in physics just has to politely skirt around.

Twistt As the video has pointed out, we don’t know a huge amount of the universe or why anything is here. There may be some greater underlying meaning to everything that our puny simian brains can not possibly hope to comprehend and there is a greater intelligence to the universe as a whole. This meaning isn’t abundantly clear to us, but it may very well be there. Nevertheless, go live your life and do what makes you happy, and maybe we’ll have the answer one day.

“This is rather as if you imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in - an interesting hole I find myself in - fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.” --Douglas Adams
