The mysterious underground hazard St. Louis leaders want to remain secret

It's right under many of the sidewalks along Washington Avenue. You can't see it, but along some buildings, you will walk over underground rooms with glass ceilings.

Everything used to be delivered by rail. There's a bunch of covered up places. When the metro link first opened you could see the tunnels that led to some of these rooms. When union station was falling apart in the 80s it was easy to get to the underground spots of the city. Most is sealed off now.

Why would shop keepers have their stores underground a 100 years ago? Does that make any sense to anyone at all? I would suggest that history of the city needs to be "dug up", and i do mean the real history of the city- not the one they've sold the public, but the one they want kept hidden

It wasn't "undergrouind" until they covered it with a thin layer of cement. A lot of sections of modern cities (New York for example) are landfill that didn't exist 200 years ago, they were swamp or water.

Every major us city has these. In Los Angeles, they’re mostly remodeled / worked into current buildings. My parking garage is on the underside of one, there’s also paths around the north side of my building that I can see from the sidewalk, but don’t know how it connects from the garage (I’ve looked for the connecting door/hall…it seems it must be not visible/sealed over)

If you look at pics of the st louis riverfront from the 1930s and compare it to now, you can see that downtown/north st louis basically sits on top of a Man made hill.

They were storage rooms. A hatch at the sidewalk would be opened, and goods delivered from the street.

do these spaces belong to the property owner or the city ????? who has liability???? I would think if they are in the original building plans EACH OWNER would have liability only for their frontage.

@@fwhkko6751 and it's on wash Ave. Could be a huge success. This whole state just no vision. None. I read an article before Colorado legalized weed about how it was going to happen so Missouri should lead. We are an agricultural state, st Louis is a biotech center and medical center. It just made sense to lead the weed movement. Now here we are middle of the pack as always. Just no vision. Fear of success?

Very possible...we had speak easys and liquor routes just like Chicago did in those days we even had gangster crews in STL our city is old and full of interesting history I wouldn't doubt that these tunnels are abundant and our citizens just are not aware of it..atleast not most of us.

Good question. Would be worth looking into. The dangers suck but the history is interesting. Might go back to eat before prohibition. If shop keepers used the glass to work but natural light, there may not have been electricity when they were built.

St.Louis had an underground railroad system for delivering goods to the buildings in downtown that was eventually abandoned. They actually ran full sized cargo trains under the major streets So a lot of sidewalks have loading docks under them. A small part of the system was reopened for Metro link. The problem now is the system has been abandoned for a century and City Hall has no intention of fixing the bridges and elevated sidewalks that are literally rusting away under people's feet. I was repairing some equipment at a printing company on Washington , we had to break through a heavy door in the basement that had been bolted shut...and was stunned to find a loading dock. When the rail tunnel was abandoned, they sealed the door to the dock to prevent the homeless that had moved into the tunnel from breaking into the basement 70 years earlier...then they forgot it existed until an ancient light fixture shorted out and caused a power panel to keep tripping.
