The Mysterious Drop Bears of Melbourne
Drop bears are one of Australia's most mysterious yet dangerous creatures. They normally live out in the Bush, away from human habitation. But can you also find them much closer to home, even in a big city like Melbourne?

I remember my grandfather told me The First Regiment of the 1st Marine Division of USA were quartered at MCG for several months in early to mid-1943. They lost 15 men via Drop Bear attacks when they wandered around MCG parklands between Jolimont Railway Station and the MCG. Eventually they were told they could only wander outside the barracks in those parks if a local was present with them so that a local accent would calm the Drop Bears from such attacks.
My sister spent one year in the US and returned with a slightly altered accent. She nearly lost an eye. Be careful people!
This is one reason the North East Link is being built primarily as a tunnel. There is a large Drop Bear population in the north east of the city. To ensure the safety of people in vehicles, the government will build the tunnel. Drop bears have been known to drop on to moving cars, using their weight to smash through the windscreen to attack people in the vehicle. The infamous drop bear attack on April 1 2007 saw 18 people injured in a Bus traveling to Greensborough Plaza. There is a plaque near the centre to remember the victims. The 18 drop bears involved in the brutal attack were all captured and moved to other known Drop bear locations, such as Brighton, Toorak and Werribee.

The East-West Link was ultimately cancelled as it would have destroyed pristine drop bear habitat.

@@handyandyaus it's being re-routed like did the Hume Fwy for Growling Frog. (any non-melbourians or don't know, they really did that re Hume Fwy). They were considering cancelling it, but they found a new route for it. It's now going to run under the Yarra 😛, not approx 300 metres from it, where the drop bears are
Great, timely video as Autumn closes in around us. I once heard that an echidna helmet factory was started up in Olinda in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne, using the bodies of naturally deceased echidnas adapted into head & shoulder protecetion in response to the tragic loss of the US Marines in 1943. Sadly, many of the surviving marines volunteered to help there and were never seen again....

"Project Monotreme" I believe it was called. I guess that we'll never know the full truth of what really happened there, but maybe that's just as well...

@@bookmarksbindery7850 Yes indeed. There are some questions that are best left unanswered. Who was it who once said that? Oh, that's right.. Spinal Tap.
Attracted to the smell of coffee. Oh dear, I'm worried!!! 😂😂😂😂
Most drop bears are nocturnal which makes it more difficult to find them, and easier for them to find you. You should always avoid being in Royal Park after dark.

Particularly on the night of a full moon.
You forgot to say that Drop Bears start their hibernation today as summer time ends tonight and with the clocks going back they settle in for a 6 month sleep.

Queensland drop bears have been observed not to follow this hibernation practice. Tourists in Queensland need to be cautious in drop beer habitats year round. It is unclear why the hibernation practice in drop bears follows the Sate border boundaries.
Amazing work, very informative. I'll feel much more prepared next time these angry little bastards are caught lurking in the area. Not sure why Melbourne City Council hasn't done more to prevent these horrific attacks.

Native species have Native Title Rights that supersede the mighty administrative powers of the Melbourne City Council, hence the reason why they can't be seen to be doing anything about the Dropbears.

I once encountered an American guy who had a friend here told him about drop bears, and believed it, no matter how many times I told him his friend was pulling his leg. We had a mutual friend and I asked my friend where did he find him?
Hi Philip, thanks for the heads up. I was going to take a short cut from the tram stop via the park to the Melbourne Zoo. I think that I will still go but I will go the long way around.
I'm glad you have sounded the warning. There are some ex premiers and ministers of the NSW government that were on a mission to rid the state of such nasty predators.
this is gold, especially today but should be mandatory viewing on any flight or cruise to Straya just to keep tourists aware
Not too sure about the toothpaste idea, but since I’ve been smearing Vegemite all over my helmet I haven’t been attacked, not by dropbears anyway. The Vegemite also deters magpies because they don’t seem to like the taste.
I was a whole minute in before I twigged. When I lived in Melbourne in 1988 the locals warned us Kiwis about drop bears but they didn't describe them so well.
I’m watching this thinking it’s clearly a piss take, then I realised it’s April fools! Well presented!
It's not too dangerous in this area during daylight hours, but I would never go into that part of the forest at night, when the bears - being nocturnal - are feeding. This is why you never see any homeless people camping out in this area. I have sent this video to my friends and relatives in the USA and they now say they will never come to Australia to visit. They can't understand why I would choose to live in such a dangerous place. So thanks.
Thank you for this informative and helpful video. Brilliant. You clearly have exemplar koalafications to report on the dangers and precautions about that terrifying species that lurks in Royal Park’s canopies. While many may argue that the subject of your video is a bearfaced lie, the evidence of sightings and attacks are irrefutable. I hope that you receive an OAM for assisting the community with this episode and thanks also for reminding me that it’s Colgate you place behind the ears and not Vegemite.

No, no, no! It's Colgate toothpaste on the bridge of your nose and Vegemite dabbed behind each ear!

@@markfryer9880 Thanks for the clarification. Your suggestion worked this morning when I saw one coming at me and I said, 'Crikey mate, you look like my relo, Bruce!' It must have then sniffed the Colgate and ran. Sadly, the Vegemite still attracts wasps.
Can you also do a video on hoop snakes and flying leeches... You need to keep the public informed about these very dangerous creatures.
You need to do a piece on the Austinmer Panther next. Despite its name, it's often found closer to Stanwell Park along the Wodi Wodi track to Coalcliff. A hand written sign at Stanwell Park Station warns of its presence.
I'm staying out of local parks, until midday. Fun. Thanks. Toothpaste behind the ears could serve to keep people away too.
This video has to go far and wide, great job bud 👍
I can totally swear by the toothpaste trick!

Nah toothpaste and Vegemite is such bs. I’ll be sticking with the cable ties thank you.
I'm more concerned about the Drop Rats. They're everywhere.
It is not so bad if they are in our bush away from the city but I am not sure I am liking evidence of them being in Royal Park. I Do visit there at times. Maybe I'll have to speak with a broader Aussie accent. Nevertheless, I am grateful for the extra knowledge and I think it would be a good idea for inbound Melbourne overseas flights to screen your short clip, for a fee of course.
Very informative video!!
We had one swimming in our pool the other day. Didn’t see it but it left a trail of water and and fur.

Close call! Good thing that you didn't 'Bomb' the pool while the Dropbear was swimming. You don't suppose that it was having a romantic dip in the pool with it's latest beau, do you? You better watch out for any other signs of Dropbear Romance or worse still, Mating!

What am I watching? Oh, right, it’s March 31st and you’re nearly a full day ahead of me.😅
Phillip, Phillip, Phillip...Everyone knows Drop Bears don't..........Venture into the urban areas. They famously have a distaste for inner city living and prefer the suburban green belt....:) :) :)😀😀

Didn't you pay attention to voting patterns in the last Victorian State Election and where the Greens won seats? Dropbear encroachment on the city follows the Greens voting patterns. It is suspected that it is related to the Latte Set and fancy coffee consumption.
Late autumn is peak time, April 1st apparently is the worst.
Absolute gold!!
🤣 Joint training operations with US forces were supposedly very tense, as the Australian guys would have to warn their American counterparts how to protect themselves, often leaving rations around their tents to keep the drop bears at bay 😂

I thought drop bears were just a myth or another name for koalas by foreigners.
