Good history Channel
The Alpine Fortress was never supposed to be a literal fortress. The alps themselves were to be the "fortress", because mountains are easy to defend.
It wouldn’t have mattered if they had built this in 1942. No fortress is impregnable. As the Soviets did with a number of fortress cities, it would have been surrounded, at least, as much as needed and Germany would have been defeated without it being of any use in the fight. Then, as the war ended, it would have had to surrender. What else could those in there do? Food would run out.

Only thing I can think of, is if they did actually have provisions for years and shielded themselves with POW’s, there might be a scenario where the guerrilla fighting turns the allies and soviets against each other to Germany’s benefit. The Germans were very good at fighting in the mountains.

No. It could have been ignored. Think about it. They couldn’t come out to fight. The allies could have pounded it, if they wanted to without fear of the German fighters bothering them. All the Germans had were the 88 flak guns. The V-1 and V-2 would be useless. Just wait for the food to run out.

Biggest being that the soviets were primarily the reason for germanys defeat. Without american might and smarts europe would be all german
