The Muslims Of Yangon Myanmar

The Muslims Of Yangon Myanmar. In this Myanmar (burma) vlog I explore the muslim area of Yangon, where there are many muslims halal street food. I walk around the muslim area of Yangon, Myanmar and speak with locals and try many different street foods. Myanmar although having many issues with muslim people, still has a large population of Muslim people and they have a great community in Yangon.

Who am I?
A man from the USA trying to discover the world one place at a time, while sharing the experiences through my lens. I like traveling to places that are usually not first on most people’s itinerary and showing everyone that these places are worth the journey. I want to experience all the countries I visit as a member of the society but at the same time learn about the culture, food and beautiful people. Growth is not achievable without leaving your comfort zone, so just do it!

Thank you so much for showing what Myanmar is. It breaks my heart that the western media always portray my country as this Muslim hating place. Yes there are so many humanitarian issues happening in that country which lets be honest are caused by the disgusting military, however the people are different. You saw first hand that in down town Yangon the church was built adjacent to the mosque which is across from the Buddhist temple. Not all Burmese are racists and islamophobic. I hope the world could separate the the horrible atrocities done by the military from the general population

Couldn't agree more. There are many marvelous mosques in our countries, as well as Hindu temples. And they're found not just in Yangon, you can see them in other cities and towns like Mawlamyaing. Yet, we're Buddhism influenced country. When you go to Korea or Japan, you rarely see mosque, much less to say in popular area. I'm not saying they're racist or anything, just making a point. Burmese / Myanmar people are actually very good at adaptability and cohabitation. Some people from Western parts accuse us for being racists. But it's such hypocrisy because they think Islamic community is terrorism and they see Asians as virus.

@@mkwke215 you can say the same for Japan and South Korea. However I do feel like it’s because of their lack of education and knowledge about other races. The British colonisation didn’t help either. Racism, racial boundaries and ethnic division all started with them. Right now education is key and younger generations are becoming more knowledgeable and accepting

It was a delight watching this series. Definitely felt very pleased to see the Muslim community here being presented as I myself am a third-generation Burmese Muslim. Amazing content and vlogs, I can't stop watching as the content is very engaging! Hoping to see you try out more of Myanmar's delicious iconic foods, which sadly is quite underrated and not very well-known. It is a blend of flavours from all parts of Asia, very diverse, and many options for halal food available if you know the spots. So do make sure to visit again if you can, can reach out anytime to explore more of Burmese cuisines :) And again, thank you so much for featuring the street foods of Myanmar, definitely would love to see more of your amazing content.

Thanks bro. These are the streets I used to walk around during 2017 and 2019. So nostalgic to watch it. Most of the people don't speak perfect english but there is no huge barrier in communication, it seems. Panthay is the term what we called to the Chinese Muslim. It's Chinese Muslim 's noodle .The tea used to be around 500 or 600 3 years ago before coup. But the commodity prices sore up about 2.5 times as the Myanmar kyat value evaporate. In 2019 it was around 1300 for 1 USD. Now 3300+ is the real market rate.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Your final comment is very well said. I've had a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who felt guilty of traveling to Myanmar. The sentiment was that the money from tourism is funding the military. I grew up in Myanmar under the previous military regime. We didn't have internet and the news was heavily censored. Seeing tourists as a kid made me wondered about the world out there -- I dreamt of traveling the world which I ended up doing later in life. All I needed was a spark of inspiration. When in doubt, please do travel to Myanmar. You will never know who you will meet.

That first street food snack you tried is called "mote lin maya" in Burmese language (which translates to couple = lin maya (married couple) , snack = mote pronounciation similar to "moat" in English so "Couple Snack" ) no idea why it's called that but its a traditional Burmese/Bamar ethnic snack/ dessert/street food and tasty. 😋😁😃 Hope you liked it, 👍🏽. I believe there should have been a topping of "pae byote" stuck on top of the snack too (Burmese boiled yellow peas) on it a few peas/beans, but not sure ?

In Yangon, both Buddhists and Muslims speak the same langauge and interact with each other everyday and have been living togethere peacfully for hundreds of years. But Rakhain state is another story, both ethnic Rakhains and Rohingyas speak diffent languages and rarely interact with each community.

That's because most Muslims and as well as Hindus living in lower Myanmar are descendants of those brought by British into the country during colonization years. They've been here for a pretty long period and already become natives after several generations. Nationally, its procedure is still the same as other countries, first generation migrants second generation half native third generations native. But honestly, their identity is just Burmese, religion as Muslim or Hindus, but the ones in rakhine state are just illegal immigrants breaking into myanmar during the past several decades. Millions got in and seeked ethnic status rohingya during last administration term. Nobody likes illegal immigrants. That's the difference between rakhine bangali muslims and burmese Muslims in lower myanmar. As for racism, there's no such thing here. Japan, Korea, China, trust me, no one has the same tolerance and acceptance like us. Buddhist temple opens Buddhist things with loudspeaker, Muslims have their prayer time with loudspeaker, Hindus have their celebrations times with loudspeaker, even they put them on trucks and go around the city. There's no restrictions. Edited : and yes, I forgot Chinese, chinese also have their worship temples and events. We have literally everything.

Myanmar tea is sweet. But you know. The interesting fact is that you can ask what exactly you like. Generally, we have four kinds. 1. Cho Saint ( very sweet) 2. Pone Mann ( normal taste) 3. Pok Kya ( a little bit bitter) 4. Cho Pok Kya (sweet but not strong and bitter at the same time) You should try bro
