The music of Depeche Mode
Formed more than 40 years ago, the English electronic group Depeche Mode likes to call itself "the biggest alternative band in the world." And yet, while lead singer Dave Gahan and lead songwriter Martin Gore began 2023 with a new album, "Memento Mori," and a packed tour schedule, they are doing so without their bandmate, Andy Fletcher, who died unexpectedly in May 2022. Gahan and Gore talked with correspondent Luke Burbank about their success, their addictions, and why they credit music with saving their lives.

Nice to see this legendary, unique band getting exposure for their remarkable 40 year career and STILL putting out wonderful new music.
I saw them live a few years back and was amazed how the stadium had people from 8-80…perhaps the most inclusive and multi-generational alternative band of all time 🤍

Lost my voice from screaming so much in all three concerts !!

I’ve been a fan since ‘83, while it’s not feasible for me to follow a band around on tour, I have been fortunate enough to have seen DM for every album tour except one. They will always be my go to when I need a mood boost.
Violator was the first CD I bought. I still remember begging my dad to take me to Best Buy. I had saved money up to get it, and that album still sounds just as fresh and riveting today. Although Black celebration hokds a special place in my hard and Everything counts. Really miss Alan as an integral part of the band and, of course, rest peacefully Fletch. This music is life!

The greatest band in the world. We can't wait to see them 3 times this coming October.
This is real music, real artists, thank you for doing what you love Dave and Martin, long live DM!
I was a fan from the first moments of sparkling keyboard watching "Just Can't get Enough" on MTV and they just kept getting better and better. I saw them live at at outdoor venue in Atlanta during a bit of a rain storm and it has remained one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Rest in Peace, Fletch

Music for the Masses is one of my top five albums. I still get chills listening to the intro of Never Let Me Down Again.
Band of my youth and adult life. Always find a song to carry me through the rough and good moments of life. My kids now are fans of Depeche Mode .
A couple years ago my friend's 16 y/o daughter was so excited to introduce us to an amazing band. Their sound was unlike anything she had heard before and way better than anything current. I gifted her my Depeche Mode cassette tape collection and laughed. Happy she has good taste in music and her father still has a boom box with a tape player.
The anxiety about "not using traditional instruments" is still a thing with non guitar production based music dominating the charts nowdays. Depeche Mode is such an important reference in the electronic and alternative music scene, its one of my favorite bands from childhood back in the 90s.
My sister and 19 yr old niece are going to see them together in Ohio and me and my 16 year old son are driving 2.5 hours to see them in Florida. I've seen them twice before and my sis has seen them once before. They sound AWESOME live, inside or outside. If you have a chance to see them inside, take it! Either way, they are amazing and worth seeing. I've seen more than 200 bands live and they are the best, by far! I highly recommend to see them now if you can. Any time now may be their last tour. It's why I had to see them again now. They have been my favorite since 1987, Music for the Masses. Their music and lyrics are second to none and their fans are magnificent!

I became a die hard DM fan at a very young age. I must have been about 7 years old. It was 82' or 83'. I was standing in my suburban Pennsylvania driveway when I heard the next door neighbor playing "People are People" coming out of the second story window. DM means the world to me. I'm very surprised to see this US news outlet talking about DM. Thank you.
In this one instance, I am beyond proud to say: I am happily a life-long member of this cult xD DM has remained my one constant throughout life. Thank you for EVERYTHING, lads
My favorite band since 1986. They have provided a soundtrack to my life though the years. Seen them live at least 10 times. Can never get enough.
Thank you Depeche Mode for making music I've enjoyed most of my life. Drove from Boise to see them in Sacramento at the start of the Memento Mori tour. I can't wait to see you again in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.

I have been a fan of DM all of my adult life. I have seen them 7 times in live concerts and plan on seeing them again next year for their extended tour in Europe. I haven't sat down in my seat at any of their concerts. I've been on my feet, dancing and singing along to all their songs and enjoying the experience along with other concert goers who, just like me, are on their feet and soaking in the music. Something magical happens at these concerts. The oneness of our humanity comes alive there. We are all one huge family and we all love the band and each other. Total strangers feeling connected and having the greatest time together.

Nice touching story. But just say your back in your home country.❤
At some point, greatness gets recognized no matter how many decades mainstream media have opted to ignore them. Guess who matured into the godfathers of rock while others got the limelight. Love it. The model for any alternative band looking for the template to stay true to yourself and your music, and gaining the masses in their own way.
One of the best shows I've ever attended was Depeche Mode at NY's Jones Beach amphitheater. As evening fell, with the water and boats in the background, under a picture-perfect clear starlit sky...omigoodness. And I agree totally about the healing power of music. When all else fails, music has saved and soothed me. And Depeche has played a huge part throughout my life. It's No Good and Never Let Me Down Again always gets me swayin'! ☺

Very much looking forward to seeing them in November. Was a teenager in the 80s and they were always a favorite of mine. This is the first time I'll see them live, checking that item off my bucket list!
Been a fan almost as long as the band itself has existed. I was at that Rose Bowl concert too. Great show! And it’s amazing that they are still filling stadiums and arenas after all these years!
The first leg of their Music for the Masses Tour was my first official concert without my parents. November, 1987. 8th grade. The month before this, mom and dad had taken me to see U2’s Joshua Tree Tour in Chicago. But that particular Depeche Mode show, without my parents, was symbolic of so many things that were happening in my life at the time. My friend and I had 1st row (my parents had the number of a ticket broker on speed dial) however we got scared of all of the punks and alternative guys and instead opted to sit elsewhere, further back! Looking at that now, I was scared to acknowledge that I was gay and for some reason their music, much like Siouxsie and the Banshees, New Order and The Smiths, would come to not only comfort me but those bands helped shape my identity and my aesthetics. Liking those bands in 1987 was like putting a target on your back- whether you were gay or not it didn’t matter. You were marked. And there was no turning back. You either embraced it or you didn’t. So, you’d better believe that by July of 1990, as I was about to start 11th grade, my 1st row ticket for the Violator Tour has me up front , dancing to Nitzer Ebb, who opened for them and ten feet from Dave for almost two hours. I’d started to acknowledge and accept myself through their music and artistry. Freshman year of college was Walking in my Shoes and the rest is history. I got to experience all of that not as nostalgia, but as it was happening in real time. If you weren’t there back then, it’s just really hard to fully describe what we were all going through at the time. But the music helped shape all of us. It was our armor. I don’t know if it like that now- or if it’s that strong- at least for the Queer Community- as it was regarding those bands back in the day. March, 2023: my husband took me to see DM in Los Angeles for my 50th birthday. Everything just hit me that night. My mortality, their mortality, those we’ve lost, people we no longer speak to. And through it all, I can say that Depeche Mode have always, unequivocally been a part of my waking and unconscious life. And will continue to be until I become a ghost, again. Thank you. Danny Hirschhorn, Los Angeles
I was at that concert in the Rose bowl!

Growing old...we feel like having a heart as big as the universe, holding in our dearest collection of music ...milion of iconic tracks and memories, yeah, how many . ..Ravel interpretations do you prefer? High school students of Brasil made the most emotional Bolero version above all, that's the power of music. That's how it works. Only God knows how come, we have weird feelings, l feel like an eagle kind of mom, when l see my beloved babies free to fly on their own, yeah, l just feel happy to sit and watch...music happenings make of our lives a better place, you can bet on it guys
