The Music of Arcane: Forging Narrative Synergy Across Genres
Фильм және анимация
Arcane was so great I have arisen from my sarcoughagus to talk about its music for 22 straight minutes. Watch it?
Arcane is an exception to the rule that a game adaptation can't be great, that a CG animated TV show can't be cinematic quality, and that score and soundtrack are fundamentally separate.

Have to agree here. This video made me think so much more about how the music was integrated it elevated a bunch of songs I didn't fully appreciate for being in the scenes they were in like Our Love. It seems jarring at first to have a blues style song in that setting but what made it work for me on first watch was simply how good the track was. But now after watching this video I get the sense that since Zaun is heavily leaning on vocal tracks unlike Piltover they needed a song like this to express the sense of soul and community Zaunites had that the edgier songs simply couldn't convey.

@@patrikneperfekta7575 That may be so but if by reactions you mean those of people commenting on YT videos or maybe reddit threads or similar, than you have to understand that those people are far, far from the average audience of the TV show. Don't get me wrong, I think that even the average watcher of the show will appreciate that it's a good show, maybe even a very good one as the 9.0/10 rating on IMDb proves. However I would agree with @Ivo Goeyens that most of the intricacies like the soundtrack, that contribute to the work of art that is this show, will go way over most peoples heads. What keeps getting me is how every single aspect of the show is done so very good. The music, the artstyle, the storytelling, the voice acting. I'd be really hard pressed to find anything at all to criticize about the show. Incidentally this makes me low-key anxious about season 2 because it will be such a tall order to live up to the expectations set by season 1. 😂
"Guns For Hire" is like one motif away from being the best James Bond theme in decades

@DLxxx

@@joshua.h Don't get your hopes _too_ high. Season 1 took 6 years to develop, and the lack of a hard deadline meant they could take advantage of that extra time to iron out any issues with the story and allow the animators to throw in there own additional details to elevate the show even further (not something shows usually have the room to do). Compare that to season 2, which will only have 3 years to develop (since Fortiche didn't know they'd get a second season till after S1 released). That's half the development time of season 1! And now they also have fan reactions to take into account, and pressure to release the story sooner rather than later (sadly not all fans are patient when it comes to this show). So there's a very strong chance that even if season 2 is good, it'll be weaker than season 1.

Knowing nothing about music theory, it was genuinely fascinating to see how the emotional beats in the story were brought out by the musical techniques being used. Arcane is a masterpiece in every department, its still amazing that somehow a video game adaptation could bring all these parts together in a way where its unfair to anime to compare it to them but its true comparison is to the biggest, most successful Golden Age live action shows.

I’ll have to listen for that in the ost! I love how this score isn’t extremely leitmotif driven. My favorite part of the aftermath of Arcane is how all the experts in the different artistic processes that went into make Arcane have all made videos being like, "guys... this is like disgustingly good.. like to a degree where it might be a breakthrough in the genre" the entire thing is a masterclass on so many artistic things that only experts can truly appreciate just how good it is on a single aspect of the series. It is truly outstanding animated storytelling! Rumors are S2 is planned for next year but that seems really soon to me so I have my doubts!
If anyone wants to hear the progression of Jinx’s timbral leitmotif, I recommend listening to “The Explosion,” the beginning of “Just a Taste,” “I Can Help Them,” and finally “Everyone Else Betrays Us” in that order.
All three of the showstopper songs never cease to make me tear up. Just incredibly powerful.
This is exactly why I want to learn music theory, to really understand what makes greatness tick. It’s just so daunting to get into, since I don’t have a childhood background in music, but you broke it down perfectly to make it readily accessible to someone like me

Though music can be written without knowing the theory, I think learning music theory is an invaluable tool to understanding how to accomplish effective score writing for media! Dissecting scores like this not only reveals unique meaning in the music, but also teaches me about the scoring process itself. :)

It was really neat to uncover the use of that chord! It could very well be part of Alex Seaver's cinematic language, but whether intentionally done or not it really helps establish an emotional through-line for the big moments.

Christian Linke was recently in a german Podcast ("Der Phantastik-Brunch" episode 35) as a guest. There was a part where he spoke about the music. Very interesting. I don't want to translate and rewrite all aspects. But just one aspect: he said they deliberately made a point of using different styles of music for Piltover and Zaun. In the upper town more orchestral music, technically very accurate and sophisticated. not only the first and second violins, but also more audibly in orchestras the far left, for example. And with Piltover as with large orchestras or bands, in Zaun more in the urban, alternative way and with fewer musicians.

I'm always iffy on award shows too, especially since I thoroughly disagree with the "Best Score" and "Best Animated Feature" categories every year. So when I see a genuinely great show recognized with awards I'm extra happy!
this was a really great video. very insightful and informative and concise. sheet music shown throughout helps a whole lot. stellar work

this video is SO. GOOD. you opened my eyes (and ears) up to how many intricate details in the score and soundtrack come together to create a stellar viewing experience. amazing!!

That's the goal! ^~^ I find film and television more interesting with an informed ear for the score. They don't often get as good as this, so Arcane is a real treat!
This is such a phenomenal video, amazing production and breakdown of the scores behind this show!

I want more Arcane 😭, but tbh if there was never any more eps this season would still be a landmark on its own
Great video, I love how you put the score and chords on the screen too. I can't get over how insanely good Arcane's soundtrack is. Also how they got people like Sting and Ray Chen is so cool.

Oh absolutely, after hearing Ray Chen in the first scene I knew the score would be great, and seeing Sting's name in the credits of Episode 9 I was like "they got STING FOR THIS SHOW??" lol
Glad I found this. Really good analysis.

Goosebumps, honestly, from the music in this show.
Excellent breakdown, it was the music in that opening scene that made me pay attention to this show. I had noticed the use of the II chord in Goodbye and Guns for Hire (I especially love it on Guns for Hire, I love how he accents the b5 (major 3rd of the II chord) in the second half of the chorus over it, then also hits it again less accented after that b6/5 descent, definitely a song writing trick I'll be yoinking) but I'd not spotted it in What Could Have Been, or tied together how it was acting as a common theme point in the show at the end of each act! Very glad I watched this show a few weeks ago after a friend sat me down and forced me to watch it! I normally hate TV and films so was pretty grumpy at first, but that exquisite music in the opening scene caught my attention so I stopped my moaning very quickly and I was treated to that rarest of things; TV that's worth watching. EDIT: moments after posting I realise it'd really be a #4 rather than a b5 in Guns for Hire, but whatever, sure you got what I meant
This is legitimately one of my favorite videos on arcane and I will save it in a new playlist so I won’t lose it

Wow definitely appreciate that! While editing I definitely thought "is this too long?" like 500 times, but decided I might as well say everything I wanted to say. Really glad it kept you hooked!
being so deep in the sauce of league there are already incredible unnoticed details about the show, yet even the music is yet another abyss of talent filled to the brim. as a league player, best media to ever come out

And as a non-League player, STILL one of the best pieces of media this decade. It’s a monumental achievement that the show works so well for League fans and those outside the fandom! Thanks for watching!
This was a fantastic analysis that gives me even more appreciation for the show and music together even though I have no knowledge of music theory. Thank you for the explanations and shining a light on the score when the soundtrack often steals the glory.

Thank you for watching and I’m glad to help deepen your understanding of a great show!
Arcane for me is beyond perfection, just watching this analysis shows me more about the kind of elevated art the show has achieved. You got a very nice point: writing for the show rather than borrow music. That's a perspective that has been on video games for a long time but in this case is also matching scenes to tell stories without words. I cannot imagine the outstanding pressure composers had to pass through in order to match their music to the show.
Amazing WORK!
Im sadly repeating my Music Theory 3 class but with the little bit I do the explanations you give and the analysis just had me love the music and score even more. I absolutely need to do a vocal cover of some of these songs for my University concerts now that I've gotten this new and better understanding of the score!

Thanks for making such a cool video on one of my favorite shows! You made it very easy to understand for a guy like me who knows nothing about music theory. Arcane is one of those rare pieces of art that is both extremely popular, and underrated at the same time. I love seeing people break down the different facets of it.

I feel like rather than underrated, it’s more that people are likely to overlook it as one of the dozens of mediocre animations Netflix puts out every year without seeing how phenomenal it looks/sounds first. But you’re right It hits that rare cross-section for me where I’m excited to talk about something that’s currently popular because it’s actually great! Praying future seasons keep the quality🙏
i had goosebumps throughout this entire video. thank you so much for this extremely insightful and fascinating analysis. i’m in awe at how much thought and consideration went into this whole series.

Thank you for watching!! The series was a master stroke I can only dream will be met with the same level of care with season 2 this year!
the way you break down the songs and how they play into the story’s narrative is so admirable. you’re so in tune (pun intended) with how music emulates emotions with inclusion to the theory behind it. someday if you ever have time, i would adore a video dumbing all this stuff down because i want to learn how to replicate music but the technicalities of it all make it so confusing to begin. anyways, this video is amazing! your knowledge on this subject is beautifully displayed here.

I love media music because it provides a lens into the functional process of composition unlike any other genre. It's music theory weaponized for maximum emotional impact and it's so interesting to unpack because of that! I may get a little too technical with terms sometimes, but I'm glad the video resonated with you even without a music theory background. :)
I had goosebumps throughout the series and this video brought them back up. Back when I watched it, i couldn' tell why it felt so perfect. This was a very good explanation

Music is definitely the most goosebumps-inducing factor of media for me, but especially when it’s paired with gorgeously rendered visuals and a thematically resonant story!
Fantastic video. This soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in awhile, just a perfect execution of focused vision. Glad someone did a video looking at it in more depth!
