I wonder if MM would have left a bigger mark if they'd been based in San Francisco instead of Los Angeles? MM's sound leaned more toward psychedelic and the Fillmore sound, while the underlying musical current in LA was a little more folk-based. Regardless, Sean Bonniwell was a great singer and MM was an excellent band. They deserve to be remembered and listened to.

@camden12000

Got to disagree with you on the Folk leanings of LA in the 1960's! You're Wrong! The North of SF was the Folk arena, while LA was the arena of the more commercialized & (experimental) psychedelia. MM was from LA, therefore they represented the time and the place of the Los Angeles music scene. The trick was to get around and be heard all over the world, and this was the challenge; everyone needed that break. It is unfortunate that MM couldn't be more popular in some sense, but really, music is all about "anonymity" - back then as it is now! Even the Doors struggled with anonymity, and Morrison made extra efforts to stand out: it didn't just happen for them over night. In fact, you can read about how Morrison idolized Arthur Lee in the beginning. Sean Bonniwell was a unique character, and he gets to be called the "Father of Punk" for his contributions. But there was so much music being created back then, that not everyone was going to be worshiped like Morrison; even though Sean has some characteristics that seem very similar to Morrison with the leather and all. I think with respect to the music, we ought not to worry about the fact that they did not always get the fame they desired (almost impossible to do), but instead that their efforts are at least being made available to us in this day. Sean Bonniwell was born in San Jose Ca. (my old home town), and he was born in a 260-day increment to my birth date. This means that he and I have the same "12-Eagle" Aztec Birth Sign. I'm gonna TRIP OUT on this for the rest of my life! I like him and his unique contribution: "Talk Talk" was the first I ever heard from him.

THE MUSIC MACHINE should've been more than just a one hit wonder with "Talk Talk". Their singles were great! Both the A sides and B sides were great and both albums, TURN ON THE MUSIC MACHINE (1966) and THE BONNIWELL MUSIC MACHINE (1968) were great albums. Sean Bonniwell R.I.P. :-(

They even dyed their hair black, had different time signatures, it goes on and on......these guys were penalized for being too forward thinking!!! Also the "soul" vocals with the fuzz guitars....just beyond belief.....

I loved Talk Talk, but I was too young and naive to follow that appreciation to buying an album and getting into them more. Sorry I didn't. They were ahead of their time. They were tough and aggressive and melodic.

They were just a little too early for people to "get it" in my opinion, like the Count Five "Psychotic Reaction". Just a year too early for mass acceptance.
One of my all time favorite songs and I adore my vinyl recording of this album. This song has the most ironic lyrics and I just love it. Thanks. Greetings from France via the USA.
Oh god, this is extremely great. When TV and culture was creative, took risks and not sterile like our iPhone culture today. Memories from a different culture and world which long, long gone now. Even Dick Clark looked a little intimidated and unsure how to respond with these guys. RIP Sean, RIP Dick.
Has anyone mentioned the tremoloed backing vocals yet? They were geniuses in studio even back then with Olsen's fuzz box as well.
The best group of the sixties
They each only wore 1 glove ! A quote from Sean Boniwell to a puzzled Dick Clark on American Bandstand ; "The Glove is for the group, the other hand is for the individual." "Ignition" on the sundazed label enlightened me to what this band was capable of. Still one of my favorite bands of all time!
I love this song, especially the ending.
A true masterpiece! But this was the sixties. An era that gave birth to such works of art!!RIP Bonniwell!
It is truly amazing and and yet very sad how incredibly AHEAD OF THEIR TIME The Music Machine were!!! You can hear "New Wave", "Goth", Iron Butterfly, The Doors, post punk, a bit of metal, etc. in their music. Amazing.

As a Punk, we knew our roots. The Seeds, The Kinks, even The Standells; many more. These bands stand the test-of-time.
So much talent and songwriting ability squeezed into just a couple of minutes.
awesome song,great album !!
I had their album in 66. Great band.
My kids didn’t get this music when they were teenagers even though it was very much ahead of its time.
Gracias por los videos de The Music Machine, gracias uno de mis grupos favoritos forever!!!!!!!!!!!
She cries like she means it and she does at the time but I get too jumpy waiting for the next time she's in a depression just about every day she tells me she's happy but I feel there's no way I've got a masculine intuition and I do not never be wrong I've got a masculine intuition whisperin'…keep comin' on strong. If i had a nickel I'd soon have a dime and climb in a phone-booth and buy me some time And we'll live in the kitchen and we'll sleep on the floor with my intuition and the neighbors next door… I've got a masculine intuition and I do not never be wrong I've got a masculine intuition whisperin'…keep comin' on strong. and keep your good time humor a keep comin' on strong nothing else gets no newer… the check's on the table and the pen's in your hand and if that makes you happy then nothing else can My mind's on the laundry while you sleep away If I had the gumption I'd leave you today I've got a masculine intuition and I do not never be wrong I've got a masculine intuition whisperin'

thank u sooo much "kingvidiot66" for up loading this incredible & amazing video of the legendary "Music Machine" which i keep dearly in my heart! they are true icons in Garage 60's music! please keep it coming! x0]
Love them from first time I heard. It was about 20 years ago
If you like this song, look up "The Eagle Never Hunts the Fly". Now that was one of their best and miles ahead of its time.
Back when rock and roll had a darker tone but could still come out upbeat and happy. Almost like a psychotic edge to it.
"Oh, that's a wild one...."
This stuff is a great trip back to sixties for me. Girls, Friends, Adult beverages….you know, the necessities.
man! takes me back! was this the flip side of Talk Talk?? not sure .. Talk Talk flipped into my head as a friend passed to me some rare old '60's stuff.. thanks so much for uploading this one!! did not expect to see a vid at all!
I can’t find more videos or anything else about these guys :( too cool
They were so ahead of their time. I swear, I think the Doors were influenced by them.
i love this band
I wonder if MM would have left a bigger mark if they'd been based in San Francisco instead of Los Angeles? MM's sound leaned more toward psychedelic and the Fillmore sound, while the underlying musical current in LA was a little more folk-based. Regardless, Sean Bonniwell was a great singer and MM was an excellent band. They deserve to be remembered and listened to.

ericynot I wouldn't have imagined so MM had an (abrasive) sound that was extremely original and unique for the time. If the band moved to SF I think they'd probably have a hard time, since their music was like weed killer to the music of flower power

They were ahead of their time, by about 10 years
Very great song indeed !!!
This was grunge, before anyone knew how to spell it
The best- Ron Edgar is a real wizard
Just one of many great garage psych bands and these boys could cook right up there with Electric Prunes,The Seeds, Blues Magoos Standells l could go on but l think people get the idea.
“That’s a wild one”
Yeah, Sean rocked as well as the rest of the lads. RIP
Anyone notice the similarity between this and Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box? Same key, similar vocal line, same guitar riff- just slowed down.
Little Steven needs to play this on his radio show.....if he hasn't already.
The Bass player used an EKO Bass guitar , the lead guitar used a Martin electric guitar and the the rhythm used a Guild electric guitar.
I don't listen to much 60's music but stuff such as this is kind of interesting.
good song.
Kind of dark gothic metal the black outfits fuzz tones are great to.
Aw esome💎👀
HELLO FROM JOE NANIA
But wait!!!! There's more.......the lyrics!!!! Who was writing stuff like this in the mid 60's!?!?? "Masculine Intuition"?!?!? Or, the lyrics to their big hit: "Talk Talk", those lyrics could've been written by Kurdt Cobain!!!!

Music Machine - black glove!
There is NO MUSIC TODAY! It’s 2024 and what’s actually perceived as music is nothing but garbage! My heart and soul still live in 1964-67! Just look how cool the music scene use to be!
hell yeah
These guys must have had the wildest groupies.
Incredible instincts for early rock's essence

That's a rare Martin electric GT-70

@Joseph Falco : Actually, that's a double-cutaway Martin GT-75; the GT-70 had a single cutaway. But yeah, those Martin electrics are extremely rare birds indeed, almost as rare as The Music Machine themselves, whose quirky psychedelic rock reminds me a lot of their better known contemporaries "Love", whose big hit "My Little Red Book" was written by none other than Burt Bacharach. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKiDm6WlecuscdI.html . Apparently these two bands also shared a preference for EKO 995 violin basses, the popular Italian-made equivalent of Höfner's famous 500/1 Beatle bass.
He had a way of perverting the English language to make a point in a song--RIP, Sean Bonniwell This vid was a playback, but was still fun--this song should have made it much higher on the charts back in 1967.
If they were around today they would be playing Ernie Ball Music Man guitars which are great by the way.
Sean Bonniwell - did I remember that correctly?

They were really talented. They could have easily grown into a big act like Zeppelin, etc.
interesting band...cerebral
Ironic title with that hairdo.
Proto Ramones fashion.

These guys sound a bit like early Love to me. Wonder if one influenced the other. Great stuff!
man this song needs to be resurrected and covered too
First time I have heard (seen) this song. They really should have had more airplay than "Talk Talk" gave them. I dig their originality to the covers and their own songs. Maybe their recording company and manager screwed them. Peace.
@wowomah6194

Apparently that is true. Bonniwell said later that his management did not even tell the band that they could have toured in Europe. One can only imagine the massive success they would have had otherwise. Sad. They could be one of the biggest names in rock history if these were the songs they were writing in the late 60s. Look at the Stones, Beatles, the Who, and so on forever, these songs were more unique and just as good as their early stuff...

They got those gloves at half price I bet !
the music machine on paras
An awful lot of the better bass players in SoCal during this time period played those EKO (or, similar) basses. Kenny Forssi from LOVE pretty much always played one, Bruce Palmer (Buffalo Springfield) around half the time, Keith Olsen here...they could be real sensitive to being overdriven and, feed back like crazy if you ventured out of the "sweet spot" of pushing the bass to the edge...these players were great players who were in loud bands with multiple guitar players...oh, Pons in the Leaves too (before he left for Zappa)
no just how hair was styled back then but it's true, if your hair wouldn't obey to the form some guys did don wigs!
HOW did they get everyone's hair to look almost identical in that band? It almost looks like they are wearing wigs!!
