Salt is a generic term and describes the product of neutralising an acid by an alkali. The salt that is often cited in the criticism of cleaners is sodium chloride (used on chips and roads).....as this provides an electrolyte for galvanic corrosion The muc off product may well not contain sodium chloride but the sodium salt of a benign component. So we should be careful to not confuse generic names with specific chemical compounds

According to the video and, apparently, MUC Off, the sodium salt in the product is not just benign it has anti corrosion properties. But we still don't know what it is.

I’ve always used Jizer as a degreaser since the 70’s and my bikes have never shown any signs of corrosion- My Z1000 which I’ve had since new and is now 15 years old is pristine and unmarked with zero corrosion plus buying a 5 litre Can is considerably cheaper than using products like muc-off- but hey it’s a free world when it comes to cleaning products.

Thank you Stuart for this comprehensive update - As you’ve stated, it would only have been a matter of time before someone else would have raised the Muc.-Off salt issue that your diligent research identified. On the basis of all your good work, l’m totally reassured in continuing to use Muc-Off products. Like the rest of your community l am very grateful for your efforts as ever to keep us informed and updated on the best care of our ‘pride and joys’. I have pencilled the Bonnie for the ‘Full Fillingham’ on Sunday morning! Top man.

This is one of the best videos you've made, Stuart, and for the first time I write to you. The video demonstrates again your passion and your commitment, and all that is a benefit to us. Plus, it unveils also all the care you apply in your researches, and it's really good to know how much you care about your viewers. Thanks again for that. I have a simple question for you: as simple as the one you were trying to ask to muc-off. Will you continue using muc-off cleaner or not, after you discovered that there's salt in that stuff, but it's "good" salt? Thanks Alessandro

That's a relief, I've just purchased 2x5L of Muc Off. Thank you for your hard work in getting to the bottom of this issue. Since watching your original "Full Fillingham" video, which is incredibly easy to find by the way, my bike always gets comments about how clean and shiny it is. It gets ridden regularly in all weathers, but takes little time and effort to regain its sheen thanks to your advice. Keep it up Sir, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Wow! Mr. Fillingham, you're integrity and dedication to showing and recommending the best products for your viewers is very commendable indeed! And all this whilst not dissing out any competitors makes it all the more admirable. Meanwhile, those histories of some corrosion observed on bikes could have been caused from insufficient or inefficient cleaning up after using the cleaning agent. I've seen this happen in my line of work. Keep the posts coming! And as a newly proud owner of T120, I've enjoyed every video of yours on the same and have successfully used your techniques and advice to good effect. Look forward to more...

Utilizing of Sodium Nitrite as Inhibitor for Protection of Carbon Steel in Salt Solution. Preventing corrosive action induced by the presence of chlorine in utility water used as a coolant in cooling towers is a challenging task. ... First of all another great, "from the heart" video, Stuart. Back in the day, nineteen hundred and frozen to death when I first worked on the railway we used a very thin detergent called 'Tepol' for washing floors walls etc. Later i learned that washing up liquid manufacturers used a similar detergent to which they added perfumes and salt. The salt made it thicker and housewives thought, quite wrongly, the thicker the liquid the higher the quality. When my uncle had heart trouble his GP told his wife to thoroughly rinse the washing up so as to remove residual salt. Indeed, if I am offered a cup of tea that has been drained and not rinsed I can taste salt on the rim as I drink. In the mid sixties a car shampoo company carried out research that showed cars washed in washing up liquid suffered severe rusting due to particles of salt that penetrated the somewhat porous paint finishes that where common at the time. I fully accept your explanation as to what MUC OFF say regarding the type of salt and their reason for adding it. All that said, I find all these bike wash solutions good at removing dust and light dirt but useless at removing oil or grease no matter how light. Chain lube fling on the back of the bike and rear wheel generally needs a degreaser. I use Paraffin on a rag, WD40, and light wash with supermarket liquid detergent followed by a thorough rinse. The last being the most important .

Hmm, some of that does still sound like "the original product didn't contain salt of any description but in order to sell this product globally and make more money we have have now added" safe" salt" on muc offs part. Thanks for being persistent and managing to clarify things, Stuart. I wonder if muc off would have volunteered the salt ingredient information had they not been pushed? Things don't always get bigger for the better in my book. Especially in business. There are nearly always corners that get cut and reductions in quality materials. Again, hats off to you Stuart for clearing it up. But even though muc off have come clean(no pun intended!) this revelation won't have done muc offs public relations/advertising a lot of good. No one likes to feel misled or conned.

  • @marcstephens6755

Interesting... FYI, I've been using washing up liquid (diluted in hot water) to clean my push-bikes (plus de-greaser products) for 25 years. My bikes have been trashed in all weathers, 52 weeks a year. The last stage of cleaning has always been a very thorough rinse with clean water, followed by an overspray of GT85 (or similar), and towel dry-off. I have never noticed a corrosion problem! I'm using the same process with my (new to it) motorbikes. Maybe I should change my method (I've bought some silcolene to try out).

Muc off produce many cleaners for different applications , caravan cleaners, motorcycle cleaners and bicycle cleaners for example , they are exactly the same product in each case just labeled differently, I went on their website and you can see they have to produce a formulation certificate for each product, all you have to do is compare the certificates . The salts they use are (I believe ) the same used in de icers along with other chemicals for cars which do in fact inhibit corrosion so the science tells me ( yes I did a bit of research , and it's out there for people to find , I'm not a scientist but I can read LOL ) Don't be fooled into thinking MUC off products that say " motorcycle cleaner " on the bottle are any different to anything else they sell . BMW warranty claim in my opinion should have been honored, but that is BMW and some of their owners for you. No doubt BMW sell a specific cleaner for there bikes that is exactly the same or similar to MUC off but use the fact that MUC off has been used to get out of a warranty claim for poor quality . At the end of the day the cleaner is washed off along with the dirt and if done properly shouldn't be present afterwards .

I know what it's like to lose sleep over such turmoil and sympathise. The to and fro with muc-off though hasn't really helped with the BMW angle? Are BMW being deliberately obstructive or do they have cause to believe that they are justified in denying corrosion claims due to the use of muc-off? Anyway, thanks for your transparency and integrity.

Im not sure if its still and ongoing situation Ste, my comment was just based on some anecdotal accounts going around a couple of years ago.

Phew!! I Must have gallons of Muck off in the shed as I'd temporarily stopped using it and didn't look forward to explaining to my wife why it wasn't being used. A story with a happy ending. Cheers Keith

How does any of this explain BMW's stance? You'd have to think they established their facts before claiming a product was harmful and leaving themselves open to possible legal action?

I understand your question, but maybe you should ask BMW? Could be interesting! :-)

BMW paint work is, or at least was, the worst in the Industry Pete, its always been their Achilles heal. I think the anecdotes related more to individual dealerships than BMW itself.

I was indeed wondering why you have stopped using muc off in the last cleaning vid. I still have over 4l of concentrate on the shelves, good to know I can still safely use this. Thanks again for taking care of business 👌

So any BMW owner should now go back to their dealer and insist the manufacturer honour the warranty.Citing MUC -OFF's assurances. We are , yet again, the Piggy in the middle, when it comes to manufacturers disallowing warranty claims against them. Not sure which are worse. Insurance companies or Manufacturers.
