Handheld PCs had been around for years beforehand from vendors like GPD (hell, Linus has covered several of them in the past on the main LTT channel), but honestly the tech simply wasn't up to par for the most part to do any kind of real gaming other than light emulation. I will give the Steam Deck props for bringing them into the mainstream though.

@@cloudGGs I can't stand when people bring up the Switch. In no way is it the same or even in the same class. One thing you might update is the reasoning for recommending the middle one. 50$ for the jump from 512 to 1tb is pretty reasonable, the small ssds still haven't really materialised in the same cheap and available manner as the large ones and unless you already have a 1 tb lying around you'll definitely pay more than 50$ for that (of course you'll also have a 512 in the upgrade mix to add to that value and in my eyes 512 is totally enough on these, especially when you add in a micro ssd and offload some of the lighter indie games)

I will say I am pretty intrigued, but I need to see performance numbers before I decide if I want to upgrade my Ally or not. And then there are the upcoming Ayaneo devices to consider, the Emulation enthusiast in me is SEVERELY tempted by the Flip DS with the new Ryzen 8000 mobile chips and that secondary display would make it perfect for DS and 3DS emulation. So many choices in handhelds. Thanks Valve for showing there was a main stream market for these devices.

Jury is out for me on this. The TDPs seem a little wild and I feel like the Arc iGPU is a bit of an unknown quantity. 53 Wh battery is a good move but its only 3 more than they managed to squeeze into the deck which is a lot better on the juice. I half expect the Arc gpu won't be up to the same kind of Snuff as the Z1 Extreme, which makes me wonder how much better it would be vs the Deck given its probably also going to be using more power. And how exactly are they squaring 2 hour run time at 35W TDP with a 53 Wh battery? The deck running at 15W needs 23W total, the Ally at 35W needs about 43W total (hence sub 1 hour run times). So I am assuming this is going to be the same ball park. How do you get 2 hours run time if you're blasting through 40Wh in an hour?

Convert typical capacity to Ah: 4700mAh / 1000 = 4.7Ah Use the typical capacity and power consumption to calculate theoretical runtime: Runtime (hours) = Battery capacity (Ah) * Battery voltage (V) / Device power consumption (W) Runtime ≈ 4.7Ah * 11.61V / 35W ≈ 1.56 hours. So, depending on how you look at it, 1.56 hours is either pretty close to or slightly less than 2 hours.

@@thespectator3312 even taking the claimed values, a 50WHour battery could only deliver 35W for 1h26m at best, and 10W for 5 hours. The details you gave there suggests it's closer to a 55WHour battery, but even that only extends the runtime to 1h33m (this is 1.56 hours) and 5h30m respectively. This is still considerably shorter than the respective 2h and 8h claims.

I like that they're making some improvements over the Deck and others like the 1080p screen, newer (probably more powerful, who knows yet) processor, Hall Effect controls, etc. But MSI has a history of anti-consumer decisions with their products, so I am not as open to trusting MSI will do right by the user with the Claw.

Healthy competition in the handheld gaming space is always a warm welcome! Happy to see this thing being as user friendly as the ROG Ally. Shame though that they too when with the 2230 SSD instead of a 2280. But I'm sure like with the Ally, the Chinese will give us a solution to make it possible to run a 2280 without modifications to the case.

@@rosestrohm7986 There is a lot of competition now, Nintendo always has people flock to there Zelda/Mario games so they will be ok no matter what. But stuff like the Steam Deck that can go for under $350 and can play games like Balders Gate 3 or Hogwarts Legacy without the setting set to full potato mode like the Switch is going to be hard to beat. Been loving my Steam Deck, console experience without the walled garden experience you normally get with consoles. Edit: Well maybe not hard to beat, but there is a LOT of options now for a portable gaming handheld, not just the Switch.

I’ve gotta give MSI credit, recently a lot of their products have been pretty easy to take apart. Having just put a water block on my GPU, it took me maybe 10 minutes to get it apart which was just because of screws but almost all of the screws were the same size and if they weren’t it was obvious where they went.

The modularity of this thing is nice to see. Too soon to tell, but the performance and battery life seem really impressive. If it had touch pads like the deck I think it could be a contender for the top spot. That said, using windows on a handheld is kinda like pulling teeth. I'm curious if MSI can come up with a solution better than the ROG Ally did. I hated that thing.

It's not odd at all. What else are you gonna do, put a 4090 in it? Besides, a lot of budget ballers use integrated graphics whether its intel or AMD just because it's cheap, and on this line-up of chips, which arn't even made for normal PC's, the graphics hold up about as well as a low-midrange GPU in 1080p.

If the updated 2024 model works well with sim card AND continues to have oculink (not shre why theyd drop it) i will buy one. Both as a phonr and a PC repalcement.
